Abstract

A device for use with a paint can comprises a housing (6) which provides a cavity (14a, 14b), in which a paint brush may temporarily be located, and a wiping edge (18) against which a paint brush may be wiped to remove surplus paint from the brush. The device has a curved downward rib (12) which lies inside the can rim, a curved side (8) which of the device lies against the outside of the can, and a web (10) of the device resting upon the rim of the can. The web (10) comprises the wiping edge (18) which extends generally parallel to a diameter across the top of the can. The cavity preferably comprises a shallow section and a deeper section with an apertured wall (16) therebetween, the deeper section being possibly used to contain a thinning liquid. The device is moulded of plastics material. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements relating to painting Description of Invention This invention is c6ncerned with improvements relating to painting. One of the difficulties encountered in painting, particularly where the paint is contained in a can, is that the painter has no convenient place temporarily to deposit a paint brush, as he may need to do when he needs to use a brush of a different size, or carry out an ancillary operation such as wiping incorrectly applied paint.

In addition whilst painting, it is conventional for a paint brush to be dipped into a can of paint, and for surplus paint to be wiped from the brush by being drawn across the inside lip of the can. However the inside lip of the can is curved, and this operation does not allow paint to be drawn uniformly from the brush, but tends to draw more paint from the outside edges of the brush, and leave either insufficient paint on the outside edges, or toa much paint adjacent to the centre. Additionally such removal of paint by the use of the lip of the can tends to cause paint to be deposited in the rim of the can, to run down the outside of the can, or harden, causing difficulty in reapplying the lid.

According to this invention there is provided a supporting device for a paint brush, comprising means to enable the device to be mounted on a paint can, and providing a plane in which a paint brush may be located.

Preferably the supporting device is moulded from plastics material, and is constructed so as to provide, when mounted on a paint can, a cavity which is upwardly-open. allowing a paint brush easily to be deposited therein and removed therefrom.

Preferably the mounting means comprises a formation such that the device may be located exteriorly of the paint can, preferably adjacent to the side thereof. Preferably the supporting formation is adapted to engage with the can adjacent to the rim thereof when the can is open, and is conveniently provided by two arcuate formations, one of which may be located within, and the other outside of, the rim.

Preferably when mounted on a paint can, the top of the device, and the opening of the cavity, are generally flush with the top of the can.

Preferably the device comprises a wiping formation extending across the open top of the can, against which a paint brush may be wiped for surplus paint therefrom to fall into the can. Preferably the wiping formation provides a straight edge extending generally diametrically across the top of the can.

According to this invention there is also provided a device adapted to be mounted on an open paint can, the device providing a wiping edge extending across the open top of the can, and against which a paint brush may be wiped for surplus paint thereof to fall into the can.

Preferably the device is mounted on the can by the use of formations adapted to engage with the can adjacent to the rim thereof, as may be provided by two arcuate formations adapted to be located one either side of the rim, for the device to rest on the top edge of the rim.

Preferably the device also provides supporting means on which a paint brush may be placed, when it is not required for use.

There will now be given a detailed description, to be read with reference to the accompanying drawings, of a device which is a preferred embodiment of this invention, and which has been selected for the purpose of illustrating the invention by way of example.

In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the preferred embodiment in postion on a paint can; Figure 2 is a plan view of the preferred embodiment; and Figure 3 is a side elevation thereof.

The device which is the preferred embodiment of this invention is a tray for supporting a paint brush during periods of use, and is particularly for use with a paint can of conventional 2.5 litre size.

The tray comprises a housing 6, three sides of which are generally rectangular, and the fourth side 8 of which is concave-curved.

Extending across an upper end of the housing 6 is a web 10, downwardly from which a curved rib 12 extends, said rib being curved in a manner concentric with the curvature of the side 8 of the housing, and being spaced a short distance therefrom.

The rib 12, in conjunction with that portion of the web 10 extending between said rib and the housing 6, provide formations by which the tray may be mounted on the open top of a can of paint, the rib 12 being hooked against the inside edge of the rim of the open can, said portion of the web 10 supporting the weight of the device, and the curved side 8 resting against the peripheral wall of the can.

When the device is so mounted on the open top of a can of paint, one or more paint brushes may be placed in the upwardly-open cavity 14 provided by the housing, when such brushes are from time to time that not required for use.

As is shown in Fig. 3 the cavity 14 may provide a shallow section 14a and a deeper section 14b, into which deeper portion a thinning liquid such a turpentine may be placed if the tray is required to support a brush for a longer period of time without hardening.

Conveniently an apertured wall 16 extends across the shallow section 14a, to prevent brushes slipping therefrom into the deeper section, the aperture permitting paint draining from a brush placed therein to be ducted into the thinning liquid in the deeper section 14b.

The web 10 also comprises a formation 18 which when the tray is placed on a can extends across the open top thereof, providing a straight edge against which a brush may be wiped, allowing paint so wiped from a brush to fall directly into the can. In this manner the accumulation of paint which occurs when a brush is wiped against the inside edge of the rim is avoided.

The features disclosed in the foregoing description, or the following claims, or the accompanying drawings, expressed in their specific forms or in terms of a means for performing the disclosed function, or a method or process for attaining the disclosed result, or a class or group of substances or compositions, as appropriate, may, separately or in any combination of such features, be utilised for realising the invention in diverse forms thereof.

Claims

1. A supporting device for a paint brush, comprising means to enable the device to be mounted on a paint can, and providing a place in which a paint brush may be located.

2. A supporting device according to Claim 1 which is moulded from plastics material.

3. A supporting device according to Claim 1 or Claim 2 which is constructed so as to provide, when mounted on a paint can, a cavity which is upwardly-open, allowing a paint brush easily to be deposited therein and removed therefrom.

4. A supporting device according to any one of Claims 1 to 3 wherein the mounting means comprises a formation such that the device may be located exteriorly of the paint can.

5. A supporting device according to Claim 4 wherein the formation is such that the device may be located adjacent to the side of the can.

6. A supporting device according to Claim 4 or Claim 5 wherein the supporting formation is adapted to engage with the can adjacent to the rim thereof when the can is open.

7. A supporting device according to Claim 6 wherein the supporting formation is provided by two arcuate formations, one of which may be located within, and the other outside of, the rim.

8. A supporting device according to any one of Claims 1 to 7 wherein, when the de vice is mounted on a paint can, the top of the device, and the opening of the cavity, are generally flush with the top of the can.

9. A supporting device according to any one of Claims 1 to 8 comprising a wiping formation extending across the open top of the can, against which a paint brush may be wiped for surplus paint therefrom to fall into the can.

10. A supporting device according to Claim 9 wherein the wiping formation provides a straight edge extending generally diametrically across the top of the can.

11. A device adapted to be mounted on an open paint can, the device providing a wiping edge extending across the open top of the can, and against which a paint brush may be wiped for surplus paint thereon to fall into the can.

12. A device according to Claim 11 which is mounted on the can by the use of formations adapted to engage with the can adjacent to the rim thereof.

13. A device according to Claim 12 wherein said formations are provided by two arcuate formations adapted to be located one either side of the rim, for the device to rest on the top edge of the rim.

14. A device according to any one of Claims 11 to 13 which also provides supporting means on which a paint brush may be placed, when it is not required for use.

15. A device substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and/or as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

16. Any novel feature or novel combination of features described herein and/or illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
