Abstract

218,757. Gower, F. W., Owen, H. J., and Nash, R. J. April 14, 1923. Rackets.-A device for bending metal strips to form the frames of tennis rackets comprises relatively slidable dies operated by a screw, and means for locating the metal strip or bar during the bending operation. Two dies or formers 1, Fig. 1, secured to a stationary bed 3, and two opposing dies 5, 6 are slidably mounted on shafts 4 projecting from the bed 3, the dies being moved by a screw 7. A projection 10, is placed at one end of the lower movable die 6, to engage an aperture in the strip, and a small adjustable anchor bar 12 is arranged to prevent outward movement of the strip. In use, one of the apertures in the strip is anchored on the projection 10, and the dies are closed to form a bend 14, Fig. 3. The other bend 14 is next formed, and the strip 11 is then placed centrally in front of the upper fixed die or former 1, a stop 16 being provided to limit the movement of the strip. Finally, the central head of the racket frame is formed by closing the dies. The device is particularly suitable for forming the racket described in Specification 210,485.
