Coiling; shearing-adjuncts. - A machine for forming coils of fine wire, for instance helical filaments for electric lamps, comprises a mandrel 22 with mechanism for advancing it, jaws 15, 16 for gripping the end of the wire while a rotary device, 12, coils it around the mandrel, and means for retracting the mandrel from the coil after its formation. In a machine for forming two coils at a time, four mandrels are carried by plates 21 slidable radially in an intermittently-rotated table C, and are advanced and retracted by rullers 26 mounted on the plates 21 running in a cam groove 25 in a disc 24. A reel of wire 11 is carried by each of the coiling-heads 12 in which the wire 10<1> is frictionally held by a spring clamp 14, Fig. 8, while it runs through an eccentric aperture 13 during the coiling operation. In the position shown in Fig. 2, the end of the wire has been gripped by the jaws 15, 16 which are closed upon it by a. wedge 20 carried by a plate 21, and the coiling-head 12 is being rotated and simultaneously moved to the right. When a coil is completed, the head 12 continues to recede without rotating to leave a straight length of wire at the end of the coil, which is then cut off by a pair of cutting-discs carried by cam-operated rocking arms.
