Abstract

218,441. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., and Fitzgerald, A. S. May 17, 1923. Electromagnetic switches; quick-action.- Successive energizations of the operating solenoid raise a core which acts through a forked lever in a disc carrying two eccentric pins whereby the disc is rotated in opposite directions and, through toggle mechanism, moves a switch member over into opposite extreme positions where it is retained by a spring. As shown, the movable plunger 26 serves to raise a flanged sleeve and thereby raise a double-armed lever 44 pivoted at 23 and carrying at its free end a pivoted forked arm 45 maintained in the position shown by a control spring 48. The switch is shown in one of its extreme positions, and, in rising, the arm 45 engages the eccentric pin 42 on the disc 33 and drives the disc in the clockwise direction, thereby raising the link 35 which is pivoted eccentrically on the disc at 34 and to the movable contact-member 22 at 36. The upward movement of the link 35, which with the disc constitutes a toggle operating-mechanism for the contact-member is continued, against the action of the spring 38, until the vertical dead-centre position of the eccentric pin 34 is passed when the spring forces the toggle and with it the contact-member into the other extreme position. With the second energization of the solenoid, the forked arm engages the second pin 43, which has assumed the lower position, and drives the disc in the anticlockwise direction thereby restoring the switch to the original position.
