Description

SPECIFICATION Peripheral seal for checking rod-like articles of the tobacco-processing industry.
The invention relates to a peripheral seal for checking rod-like articles of the tobacco-processing industry conveyed in holders of a rotating checking conveyor, in particular of mouth-piece cigarettes with a secondary air supply passing through the end of the mouthpiece, connected as regards flow to a ventilation area of the mouth-piece and emerging on the front face of the mouth-end of the mouthpiece, comprising a mounting receiving a rotationally symmetrical sealing member enclosing the mouth-piece.
Sealing members of the afore-mentioned type are generally known for checking the soundness of the wrapping of rod-like smoker's articles or for checking the desired permeability to air of ventilated mouth-piece or filter cigarettes. In veritilated filter cigarettes of a relatively new type, the perforated ventilation area is connected to groove-like secondary air channels, which pass axially through the filter mouth-piece in the outer peripheral region and open out on the front face of the mouth end. These channels may also extend further within the filter as well as obliquely or helically.
It is the object of the invention to take measures which facilitate checking of the permeability to air of a ventilation area designed in this way.
This object is achieved according to the invention due to the fact that the mounting comprises an end stop supporting the end of the mouth-piece and leaving free or exposing the outlet cross section of the secondary air supply.
True measurement signals of the permeability to air of the ventilation area are obtained due to the fact that checking air channels of the mounting open into the region of the secondary air supply left free by the end stop.
Particularly in the case of groove-like secondary air channels on the periphery of the article, a construction according to the invention is advantageous which consists in that the end stop has a central surface section supporting a central surface of the end of the mouth-piece.
If the secondary air channels extend further within the filter, a construction according to the invention is advantageous in which the end stop has a web cross section extending radially with respect to the end of the mouthpiece. According to a development, a web cross section of this type is appropriately formed by a web cross, opening into the free spaces of which are the checking air channels of the mounting.
Checking signals which are defined with respect to the ventilation area or its secondary air channels are obtained with the measures according to the invention.
The invention is described in detail hereafter with reference to embodiments illustrated in the drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a partial longitudinal section through a checking drum in the region of the checking station, Figure 2 is an enlarged partial longitudinal section through a peripheral seal according to the invention, Figure 3 shows a modified embodiment of the peripheral seal and Figure 4 is a cross section through the peripheral seal on line IV-IV of Figure 3.
The conveyor constructed as a checking drum 1 and illustrated in Figure 1 is part of a filter-attachment machine which is not shown further but is known generally in the tobaccoprocessing industry, on which pre-formed filters are connected to cigarettes and the resulting filter cigarettes are checked as regards the tightness of their wrapping or as regards a pre-determined permeability to air of their ventilation area in the filter part.
On its outer surface the checking drum 1 comprises holders in the form of web depressions 2, in which the rod-like articles in the form of filter cigarettes 3 are held by suction.
The web depressions 2 are so deep that they receive somewhat more than half of the cross section of a filter cigarette 3 or surround somewhat more than half the periphery of the filter cigarette. The suction is produced by a suction source which is not shown and is transmitted by way of channels 4, 6 into the web depressions 2. The channels 6 extend substantially radially in the cylindrical body of the checking drum 1 and in the region of the hub open into the channel 4, which extends axially outwards through a stationary hollow shaft 7. Rotating inside the hollow shaft 7 in bearings 8 is a drive shaft 9, which is securely connected by way of an annular connecting member 11 and screws 12 to the checking drum 1.
Bearing rings 17 are attached by spring connections 16 to the hollow shaft 7 on the one hand and to a bush 14 mounted on the shaft 9 and fixed by means of a lever 13 attached to the machine frame on the other hand, on which ring 1 7 bearing seats 18 are provided on both sides of the checking drum 1, obliquely with respect to the longitudinal axis of the drive shaft 9. They are inclined in the direction of the checking drum 1, so that the bearings 19 provided thereon extend in planes which converge at an acute angle on one side of the checking drum 1 and diverge on the opposite side. The inclination of the bearing seats 18 is of the same magnitude on both sides of the checking drum 1.
The bearings 19 serve for mounting supports 21, which extend in the afore-described planes inclined obliquely with respect to the drive shaft 9. They are acted upon by control segments 22, which are fixed by way of a connecting web 23 to the stationary bearing rings 17. The control segments 22 bear by way of sealing surfaces 24 on the supports 21. For the fine adjustment of the supports 21, the position of the bearing rings 17 may be shifted with respect to the hollow shaft 7 on the spring connection 16. Due to this, according to the length of the articles to be checked, the supports 21 are moved to a greater or lesser extent in the direction of the checking drum 1. Clamping means which are not shown serve for fixing the bearing rings 17 on the hollow shaft 7 or the bush 14.
For introducing or discharging checking air into or from the articles 3 to be checked, sealing members 26 serving for the peripheral sealing of the articles 3 are provided on the left-hand side on each support 21 and sealing members 27 serving for sealing the end faces of the articles 3 are provided on the righthand side of the drum. The sealing members 26 and 27 surround the nozzles or mountings 28, 29 serving for the supply or discharge of air, in the manner of a collar, which nozzles or mountings are connected to checking air channels 31. The latter extend through the control segments 22, to which a checking air connection 32 is attached. They open into a connection channel 33, by which checking air is supplied to the nozzles 29, 28 or discharge therefrom.Provided in the sealing surface 24 of the control segment 22, at the transition from the checking air channel 29, 28 into the connecting channel 33, is a control slot 34, which is shorter than the distance between two successive web depressions 2 on the checking drum 1. It extends on the circular path described by the connecting channel 33 and controls the inlet or outlet of checking air into the nozzle 29 or from the nozzle 28.
The sealing members 27 serving for sealing the end faces of the articles 3 are provided with an elastically deformable end wall 36, which comprises a central opening 37 for the passage of air.
The sealing members 26 serving for sealing the periphery of the articles and which are likewise rotationally symmetrical or in the form of a hollow cylinder, consist of a soft flexible material, such as for example rubber and may have a variable inner diameter. The sealing member 26 is provided at its free end with an annular bead 38, onto the end face of which a strengthening ring 39 in the form of a metal covering is stuck or vulcanised. Behind the annular bead 38, the sealing member comprises a reduced annular section 41 of the wall, consisting of a tapering wall portion, which is constructed as a convex bulge projecting inwards or as a bulge narrowing down the outer surface of the sealing member 26 in a concave manner.
The filter cigarettes 3 held in the web depressions 2 are provided at the filter end with a perforated ventilation area 42, which is connected to groove-like secondary air channels 43 extending axially on the periphery of the end of the filter, which channels open out at the mouth end of the filter, thus producing an annular rim of secondary air openings on the front face of the end of the filter.
According to Figure 2, for the axial support of the filter cigarette 3 inside the peripheral seal 26, the mounting 28 receiving the sealing member 26 is provided with an end stop 44, which in the form of a central surface or central ring surface section acts solely on a central surface section of the mouth-piece end of the filter, so that the outlet openings of the secondary air channels remain free. Opening into the region of the openings of the secondary air channels 43 left free or exposed by the end stop 44 are checking air channels 46, which pass radially through the end stop 44.
In the modified embodiment according to Figures 3 and 4, in which the same parts are provided with reference numerals increased by 100, the end stop 144 is constructed as a web cross section in the form of a web cross 147, opening axially into the free spaces of which are checking air openings 146 of the nozzle or mounting 128.
According to Figure 1, the filter cigarettes 3 lie with somewhat more than half their cross section in the receiving depressions 2, i.e. the receiving depressions 2 are so deep that they surround more than half of the periphery of the filter cigarettes 3. The front edge section 48 of the checking drum 1 produced in this way and defining the receiving depressions 2 serves as a stop face for the annular bead 38 or the strengthening ring 39 of the sealing member 26 attached thereto. The supports 21 are connected by way of coupling bolts 49 to the checking drum 1. The latter project by their free ends into recesses 51 in the checking drum 1, whereof the dimensions are such that the ends of the coupling bolts 49 may move freely therein at the time of the swinging rotation of the supports 21. Moreover compression springs 52 are provided, by way of which the supports 21 are supported with respect to the checking drum 1 at the time of their swinging movement. They are compressed as the support 21 approaches the checking drum 1 and they relax when the support 21 and the checking drum 1 move apart.
The right-hand checking connection 32 is supplied with checking air by way of an inlet pressure valve 53 and a supply line 54. The left-hand checking air connection 32 is connected to a checking line 56, which is connected to a pressure/voltage converter 57 and an indicator 58 for defining the pressure.
The apparatus according to Figures 1 and 2 operates as follows: The drive shaft 9 is set in rotation by way of a drive which is not shown. The drive shaft drives the checking drum 1 by way of the connecting member 11, which drum rotates at the same speed as the drive shaft 9. Then the air is drawn out of the channel 6 by way of the channel 4 extending in the hollow shaft 7.
The articles 3 to be checked are held on the checking drum 1 by the suction produced in this way in the web depressions 2. The articles 3 are laid in the web depressions 2 at the instant when the supports 21 have moved away from each other and from the checking drum 1 on account of its inclined position.
During the rotation of the checking drum 1, when the supports 21 are entrained by way of the coupling bolts 49, the latter move towards each other so that the sealing member 27 with its end wall 36 lies against the righthand tobacco end of the filter cigarette 3, whereas the sealing member 26 slides over the mouth-piece end of the filter cigarette beyond the annular wall section 41, in which case the annular wall section 41 first of all still surrounds the filter cigarette 3 with a smal spacing.During the further inwards movement of the supports 21 the annular bead 38 or the strengthening ring 39 of the sealing member 26 bears against the front edge section 48 of the checking drum 1 defining the receiving depression 2, in which case the sealing member 26 is compressed axially, so that the inwardly projecting annular wall section 41 is deformed and in this case advances radially inwards into the inside of the sealing member 26 and lies closely around the surface of the filter cigarettes 3 in a sealing manner. The axial force necessary for the right-hand end of the cigarette to bear in a tight manner against the end wall 36 of the sealing member 27 is produced by the end stop 44 of the mounting 28 acting on a central surface of the mouth-piece end of the filter cigarette. In this clamped position of the filter cigarette 3, checking of the permeability to air of the ventilation area 42 of the filter end formed by the perforation can be carried out, in which case the checking air supplied by way of the supply line 54, the checking air connection 32, the control slot 34, the connecting channel 33 and the sealing member 27 at the front end first of all flows longitudinally through the filter cigarette 3, emerges at its left-hand end adjacent the filter, within the sealing member 26, enters from there into the exposed openings of the secondary air chan nels 43, which it flows through in the opposite direction in order to emerge into the atmosphere by way of the perforated ventilation area 42.The pressure drop of the checking air brought about in this way is measured by way of the checking air channels 46, the con necting channel 33, the control slot 34, the checking air channel 31 and the checking air connection 32 by the pressure/voltage converter 57 installed in the checking line 56, is processed in known manner to form checking signals and displayed by the indicator 58.
As the checking drum 1 continues to rotate, the supports 21 move away from each other in the region of the sealing members 26 and 27, in which case the annular bead 38 of the sealing member 26 is increasingly relieved of the counter-pressure of the front edge section 48 of the checking drum 1 and moves back axially into its initial position. To the same extent, the annular wall section 41 of the sealing member 26 is again expanded radially and the peripheral surface of the article 3 is released. The retaining pressure in the web depressions 2 is reduced for transferring the article 3 to a conveying drum which is not shown. If the check has shown that the predetermined desired checking values of the permeability to air of the ventilation area are not maintained, then the article ascertained to be faulty is eliminated from the continuing production process in a known manner (which is not shown) by a controlled ejection device.
