An apparatus to prevent the bell of a telecommunications receiver (for example a telephone hand-set) ringing when a communicator wishes to be connected by a telephone call directly to a computer linked to the receiver and a modem unit. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements to Communication Apparatus The present invention is concerned with communications via telephone apparatus to a computer. It is known that a computer may be linked to a telephone, say a hand-set, so that a communicator is able to make a telephone call to the telephone number of the installation, and be automatically connected to the computer.
Communication can then take place between the communicator and the computer. This is achieved via known means, e.g. a "modulator/demodulator" (modem) unit connected to the telephone and the computer.
A disadvantage with present installations is that the bell which is usually part of the hand-set gives at least one ring before the connection is made to the computer. If the installation is in a private residence or office, for example, this can be a nuisance.
The present invention has been developed to overcome this disadvantage according to the invention therefore, there is provided a device which enables the communicator to dial the number of the telephone concerned, and be connected directly to the computer without causing the bell in the handset to ring.
One example of the device according to the invention is shown basically diagrammatically in Fig. 1 and consists of a free standing circuit, preferably enclosed in a suitable case, with terminals for external connections.

The diagram shows a configuration of components, electrically connected.
Standard notation is used in the diagram to describe the components and connections.
No claims are made for these components as individual items and equivalents may be used where specific makes are described. The circuit shown may be improved and extended for handling different types of signals, e.g. for radio or radiotelephone communications, or for combining a modem unit with the device in a single enclosure.
The device may be interposed in various ways connecting the incoming line, the modem unit, the handset, its bell and the computer, depending on the location in the circuit of the modem unit relative to the handset and computer, but in each case providing the means according to the invention of connecting the communicator with. the computer without the bell in the handset ringing.
The computer is connected by a suitable switching system so that it may be isolated when required.
The invention allows the handset to be used for making and receiving telephone calls in the usual way.
One mode of operation of the device according to the invention is as follows:- 1. A communicator dials the number of the telephone.
2. An incoming signal is received by the modem.
3. The modem unit activates the device according to the invention.
4. The device simultaneously isolates the bell of the handset and the communicator is automatically connected to the computer.
One embodiment of the invention is self powered and has the advantage that the device need not draw power from the telephone line system.
1. An electrical apparatus comprising an electrical circuit and components in use to prevent an audio signal being generated in a telecommunications receiver in turn connected to a computer.
2. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1 where the electrical circuit and components are as shown in Figure 1 and accompanying description.
3. An apparatus as claimed in either of claims 1 or 2 where it is enclosed in a case with means for external connections.
4. An apparatus as claimed in any of claims 1 to 3 where it is connected to a modulating demodulating unit (a modem).
5. An apparatus as claimed in either of claims 1 or 2 where it is incorporated in a modem unit.

    SPECIFICATION Improvements to Communication Apparatus The present invention is concerned with communications via telephone apparatus to a computer. It is known that a computer may be linked to a telephone, say a hand-set, so that a communicator is able to make a telephone call to the telephone number of the installation, and be automatically connected to the computer.
    Communication can then take place between the communicator and the computer. This is achieved via known means, e.g. a "modulator/demodulator" (modem) unit connected to the telephone and the computer.
    A disadvantage with present installations is that the bell which is usually part of the hand-set gives at least one ring before the connection is made to the computer. If the installation is in a private residence or office, for example, this can be a nuisance.

    6. An apparatus as claimed in any of claims 1 to 5 in use to enable a communicator to be connected directly to a computer via a telecommunications link and receiver incorporating an audio signal generator without an audio signal being generated. 7. An apparatus as claimed in claim 8 where the telecommunications link is a telephone line and the receiver is a hand-set with bell.
    8. An apparatus as claimed in any of claims 1 to 7 where it is self-powered.
