Abstract
A rotary brush for machines is proposed comprising a plurality of radially orientated bristles (5), each bristle being formed from a plurality of individual wires. The bristles (5) each extend through a bore in a disc-shaped carrier member (2) and the individual wires forming each bristle (5) are externally twisted together in sections. This braid-like twisted region (51) of each bristle (5) is at least partially covered by steel discs (3) which are disposed coaxially with the carrier member (2). The steel discs (3) are internally lined with a liner (4) formed of a material softer than the steel from which the discs are made such as plastics material, cork or paper. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
A rotary brush
The present invention relates to a rotary brush for machines, such as grinding and deburring machines.
Rotary brushes are known and are sometimes called "tufted" brushes. Such brushes comprise radially orientated bristles formed from a plurality of individual wires, which bristles extend through bores in a disc-shaped or annular carrier member.
The individual wires from which each bristle is formed are externally twisted in sections, the twisted region being wholly or partially covered from externally by means of steel discs which are coaxially disposed with the carrier member.
In practice, such brushes exhibit premature wear ofthe individual bristles in the covered region where the twisting has been effected. Accordingly, the service-life of such brushes is generally not limited by the wear on the end faces or tips of the individual bristles but by the damage sustained in the region of the twisting of the wires. During the routine use of rotary brushes, the individual bristles obviously execute oscillatory, lateral movements which cause friction phenomena to be set up in the region where the bristles are covered by the cover discs, which latter are generally made of steel.
The present invention seeks to provide a rotary brush in which the damage sustained by the bristles in the region of the covering steel discs is obviated or at least minimized.
According to the present invention, there is provided a rotary brush for machines comprising a plurality of radially orientated bristles, each bristle being formed from a plurality of individual wires and extending through bores formed in a disc-shaped or annularcarrier member, the individual wires forming each bristle being externally twisted in at least one region, the region where the wires are twisted together being at least partiaily covered from externally by steel discs, the steel discs being disposed coaxiallywith the carrier member, wherein the steel dics are internally lined with a linerformed of a material which is softer than the steel used to form the discs.
Preferably, the liner is in the form of an annular insert member made of plastics material, cork or paper and is located between the steel discs, the insert member having a substantially U-shaped cross-section.
Because linings are provided in the region where the steel discs cover the bristles, the wear which would otherwise have occurred in the twisted, lower securing region ofthe bristles during operation of the brush is prevented. In consequence, the service-life of a rotary brush in accordance with the present invention is considerably prolonged.
One embodiment of the present invention will be further described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure lisa side elevational view of a circular brush in accordance with the present invention; and
Figure2 is a sectional view taken along the line I-I of Figure 1.
In the drawings, there is shown a circular brush for machines such as grinding ordeburring machines.
The brush includes a plurality of radially orientated bristles 5which are fixedly mounted in bores disposed in the edge region of a disc-shaped carrier member 2. The bristles are formed from individual wires which extend through the bores in groups and which are connected together in their region 51 by braid-like twisting.
The disc-shaped carrier member 2 includes a shaft receiving meansforpermitting the brush to be rotated. Steel discs, generally referenced 3, are retained in position from externally, by means not shown, on the carrier member 2so that they are substantially coaxial with the shaft receiving means 21 of the disc-shaped carrier member 2. Ideally, two such steel discs 3 are provided, each of which has a radially outward bent-over end portion 31. The two discs 3thus define a holder having a bifurcated cross-section and which laterally covers the region wherethe bristles Sarefixedlymounted in the carrier. At least the portion 31 of each of the steel discs 3 located in this mounting region is internally lined with a lining 4.This lining is generally madeof plastics material but could also be made of cork or paper or indeed any other material which is softer than steel. The lining 4which, in this embodiment, is in theform of an annularplastics material insert member, has a U-shaped cross-section and protrudes radially outwardly slightly beyond the periphery of the steel discs 3 or their portions 31.
1. A rotary brush for machines comprising a plurality of radially orientated bristles, each bristle being formed from a plurality of individual wires and extending through bores formed in a disc-shaped or annular carrier member, the individual wires forming each bristle being externally twisted in at least one region, the region where the wires are twisted together being at least partially covered from externally by steel discs, the steel discs being disposed coaxially with the carrier member, wherein the steel discs are internally lined with a linerformed of a material which is softerthan the steel used to form the discs.
2. A rotary brush as claimed in claim 1, wherein the liner is in the form of an annular insert member made of plastics material, cork or paper and is located between the steel discs, the insert member having a substantially U-shaped cross-section.
3. A rotary brush as ciaimed in claim 1 constructed and arranged to operate substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
