Abstract

Members 30A,B form cradles to support the material, in the form of "sticks" of reeled paper to be cut at fL to reels, during cutting and sliding advancement of the material between cuts, and tape elements 42 embrace the material above the cradles, the tape elements being driven cyclically and evenly to press upon the material during the cutting and to reduce the pressure on the material during the advancement thereof. The cradles are adjustable and replaceable to accommodate a range of diameters of reels. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Cutting material into reels The invention relates to apparatus for supporting "sticks" of material to be cut by machines into reels. The cutting machines usually use a disc cutter and have intermittent motion.
The invention provides apparatus as set out in claim 1.
Each tape element may be anchored on one side to a fixed clamp and on the other side to a clamp movable through the control of cam means operated in synchronism with other members of the machine. The movable clamp may be carried by an oscillating lever, driven by the cam means, possibly through an elastic and adjustable tie rod.
In one embodiment, the members which form cradles are more or less symmetrical to an axial plane of the stick advancing with intermittent motion, and are mounted on symmetrical brackets adapted to be angularly adjusted in a symmetrical way to change the cross section profile of the cradle. The two brackets may be articulated in close but spaced apart positions to allow the passage of means for the axial intermittent thrust of the stick. The brackets may be adjusted symmetrically by a suitably threaded bar whose rotation causes the displacement of bushes carried by the brackets.
The members which make up the cradles are easily replaceable in order to obtain the working of materials of even very different ranges of diameters.
The invention will be better understood by a reading of the following description in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, which shows a practical non limitative exemplification of the same invention. In the drawing: Figure 1 is a side view with cutaway zones; Figure 2 shows a view orthogonal to the preceding one, with cutaway parts; Figures 3 and 4 show a schematic plan view and a construction detail of the presser tape.
According to what is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, a housing 1 is disposed to receive within a cradle, by retaining means, a stick to be cut for forming reels by a blade, per se known, which strikes the stick the stick to be cut according to arrow f" while the stick and the reels formed therefrom slide with intermittent motion according to arrow fB.
On the housing 1 supports 5 are provided to articulate two brackets 9A and 9B which are in two positions symmetrical respect to the vertical plane, having trace A-A, which contains the axis of the stick to be cut and of the already cut reels. With these two brackets, respective right-angle appendixes 11 are solid, developed downwardly from the outer ends of the two brackets. Each of the appendixes 11 carries, at its iower end, an oscillating bush 13 that by a threaded hole transverse to the oscillation axis (and therefore diametrical), engages in a corresponding threaded length 15 of a rod 17. This rod 17 can be driven for rotation by a manoeuvring handwheel 19 which then serves for symmetrically adjusting the brackets 9A, 9B around the respective axes 7.The rod 17 is supported directly by bushes 13 and is axially centered by a fork 21 which develops downwardly of the housing 1; with this fork a bush 27 having an annular throat is slidably engaged, which bush is held on the rod 17 between two shoulders 25 and 27; by this arrangement, the rod 17 may perform limited displacements, according to the double arrow f,7, orthogonally respect to its own axis because it is kept centered against axial displacements of the bush 23 engaged to the delimiting lateral surfaces of fork 21; these displacements of the rod 17 according to arrow f,7 are caused by the same adjusting angular movements operated through the manoeuvring handwheei 19 and to which angular changes of brackets 9A, 9B correspond.Adjacently to the pivot axis 17, each bracket 9A and 9B carries a member 30A respectively 30B, engaged with the bracket 9A respectively 9B; the members 30A, 30B are fixed by means of respective securing screws 32A and 32B and are thus replaceable to adjust the apparatus for different diameter ranges of the stick respectively of the reels cut therefrom. Each member 30A and 30B has a concave cylindrical surface 34A, 34B, one facing the other and one approximately in the continuation of the other. The two concave surfaces 34A and 34B develop likewise members 30A and 30B to form two adjacent sections separated by a spacing I in correspondence of which the blade moves according to arrow f, to perform a cut.Substantially, the members 30A and 30B, and the surfaces 34A, 34B, in two adjacent sections separated by the spacing I, make up two cradles which receive the material to be cut, respectively, the cut material adjoining the cutting plane.
The two members 30A and 30B engaged with the brackets 9A and 9B are-as already mentioned-replaceable; in Fig. 1 there are shown, with solid line, the two members 30A and 30B with surfaces 34A and 34B of greater diameter, while by 30X and 30Y, with indicative thin line, there are shown two members which can replace those 30A and 30B and forming cradles of smaller diameter.By adjusting symmetrically, through the handwheel 19 and then through the rod 17, the bushes 13 along the threaded lengths 15 of rod 17, and then by adjusting symmetrically the relative inclination of brackets 9A and 9B, the profile of the cradles formed by a same pair of members like those 30A (34A), 30B (34B) can be changed so as to obtain adjustments for diameters of sticks which are included on a same range of diameters of sticks and reels which can be worked by utilizing the same members 30A and 30B; for different ranges of diameters, said members are replaced.
The cradles formed by pairs of surfaces like those indicated by 34A, 34B adjacent and opposite to the spacing I, serve for slidably receiving the stick of paper material wrapped up on a core, which is to be cut to form reels.
The sticks it is known-must be pushed axially from the terminal end (relative to the advancing direction) by means of a pusher suitably driven in a manner per se known, with intermittent movements in synchronism or out of phase respect to the work cycles of the blade which is to sink into the spacing I for the cutting. By 40 symmetrical guides are indicated that serve for sliding the pusher, which pusher is able to go through the interspace between the two brackets 9A, 9B adjacently to the respective articulations 7. The pusher-not shown-pushes also in a manner per se known the residual portion of the stick to be cut and at least some of the reels just cut. Each of the surfaces 34A or 34B formed by the respective member 30A or 30B, has an invitation, that is, a slanting profile as indicated by 34X along the arcuate edge of the cradle-like surface 34A or 34B, which is firstly encountered by the material advancing intermittently according to arrow fB in the direction of the axis of the stick-shaped material.
After having advanced according to arrow fB along the surfaces like those 34A and 34B of the two cradles adjacent to the spacing I of the cutting plane, the material to be cut must be hold pressed against the cradles adjoining the cutting plane with some pressure which, instead, has to be reduced upon the axial intermittent advancement; this increased pressure favours the cutting operation, whereas the reduced pressure (even up to its annulment) permits an easy and regular intermittent advancement between one work cycle and another. To exert this pressure and adjust it, with each member like the one indicated by 30A the end 42A of a flexible tape 42 is engaged whose other end 42B is engaged with a clamp 44 pivoted to a mobile support 46; each tape 42 takes on an arcuate arrangement which is opposed to the respective cradle formed by the two members 30A, 34A, and 30B, 34B.By lowering the support 46 a pressure is exerted by the tape 42 on the material (the remainder of the stick to be cut) and by the latter against the cradles formed by the surfaces 34A and 34B; by slightly raising the support 46 the pressure is reduced even up to its annulment. To facilitate the advancement of the material according to arrow f8 (that is, for a function similar to the one provided by the slanting profiles 34X), the arcuate edges first encountered of tape 42 are shaped as an invitation; this may be accomplished (Fig. 4) through a plurality of holes 46A and respective slots 46B along the tapes edge first encountered by the material advancing in the direction of arrow fB, the small teeth 46C thus formed being slightly curved outwards.
The support 46, for the articulation of the end 42B of each of the two tapes, is carried by a lever 48 which is pivoted at 50 to a support 52 being carried by the respective bracket 9B. The levers 48 are driven cyclically for a lifting and lowering movement-and hence, for reducing and increasing the pressure of tape 42 on the material-cyclically and in phase with the intermittent advancements and the cutting cycles; in particular, the levers 48 are lifted just before the advancement of the material according to fB, and are lowered just before the cutting cycle, and kept lowered during the same cycle. To attain the cyclic control of levers 48, these are driven by a draw-strut rod 56 which is pivoted at 58 to the respective lever 48 and at 60 to a tappet arm 62 pivoted, in turn, at 64 to the fixed structure and having a contact roller 66 with a cam member 68. The cams 68 are carried by a shaft 70 which rotates with continuous motion and is kinematically connected with the other mobile members of the apparatus, in particular, with the mobile members of the cutting system. In this way, the movements of levers 48 are synchronized with the cutting cycle. The rod 56 may comprise an elastic pull system, like a pneumatic spring 56A or other, to cause the respective tape 42 to exert the desired degree of pressure on the stick material in the cutting zone; this pressure may be adjusted even differently on the two tapes upstream and downstream of the cutting plane (relative to the advancement direction fB).
The apparatus permits the working of materials of even quite different diameters and also of various nature by simple adjustments or limited and quick replacements of members like members 30A, 30B and of some components associated therewith like tapes 42 and supports 46.
The presence of the cradie-forming elements and of the pressing tapes ensures a highly uniform distribution of the pressure, with surfaces embracing the reel.
The possibility of adjusting the possible frictioning pressure during the intermittent advancement of the material, and the possibility to operate and adjust the pressure on the material during the cutting, permit to ensure a remarkable cut regularity, rapidity and precision.
