Abstract

The board is assembled from 64 square elements 1 and the chess set comprises rook pieces 2, bishop pieces 3, Queen pieces 4, King pieces 5, knight pieces 6 and pawn pieces 7. The shapes of the pieces suggest the pattern of movement each piece may undertake during the game. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Didactic chess set This invention relates to a didactic chess set.
The chess game is an ancient game played on a board involving two opposing camps of "men" in a "battle" according to certain strategies and displacements of the pieces on the board.
Whilst the chess game strategy is a complex and infinitely varied subject very much depending on the intelligence and the skill of the players the movement of the pieces on the board is strictly defined so that each piece moves in its own characteristic way.
The chess sets however come in a multitude of designs that are sometimes difficult to apprehend by a novice.
According to the present invention there is proposed a didactic chess set comprising of loose field squares and pieces of simple geometrical shapes that suggest to the player the way in which they move on the board all being proportioned to a common module.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing 1/2 in which: Figure 1 shows in perspective, the chess set with the board assembled and the pieces in the initial position; and Figure 2 illustrates in axonometric, the essential features of the chess pieces; and the accompanying drawing 2/2 in which: Figure 1 illustrates the square unit; and Figures 2 to 7 illustrate the principle of the castle, bishop, queen, king, knight and pawn respectively.
Refering to the drawings 1/2 and 2/2 the chess set comprises a board made up of 64 square units 1 of two colours assembled as necessary with the pieces arranged in starting position in two rows at either side of the board the first row being occupied by the pawns 7 and the rear by the castle 2 at the corners of the board, followed by the knights 6 and bishops 3 towards the centre of the board that is occupied by the queen 4 and the king 5.
In order to beguin the chess play it is necessary to assemble the board using the square units 1 and arrange the pieces in position as described above. The game may then proceed in accordance with the standard rules.

CLAIMS Amendments to the claims have been filed, and have the following effect: Claims 1-8 above have been deleted or textually amended.
New or textually amended claims have been filed as follows: 1. A didactic chess set designed integrally with the board upon which the game is played.
2. A didactic chess set as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the board is made up of loose squares half of which are manufactured from the same material as the White Chessmen and the other half of the squares manufactured from the same material as the Black Chessmen using two materials of compatible texture and contrasting colour.
3. A didactic chess set as claimed in Claim 1 and Claim 2, wherein all elements are designed to the common module of One, this module being the height of the square element representing the thickness of the board.
4. A didactic chess set as claimed in Claim 1 or 2, wherein the proportion of the square element is 1 x 521 x 521.
5. A didactic chess set as claimed in Claim 2 or 3, wherein the Chessmen are designed so as to illustrate the role each Chessman plays in a chess game.
6. A didactic chess set as claimed in any preceeding claim, wherein the shapes of all chessmen are derived analitically from the method of displacement and the range of displacement on the board characteristic to each individual chessman.
