Abstract

An air freshener of deformable sheet plastics material is formed with a hook by which it can be suspended. The sheet is of thickness 0.2-1.0 cms and is formed of 5-50% by weight of a fragrance mixed into 95-50% by weight of a plastics material comprising about 82% by weight of high melting low density polyethylene and about 18% by weight of polyvinyl acetate. A preferred physical form of the air freshener comprises a clip region 14, a body 10 and a neck region 12 connecting the clip region with the body. The clip region includes a pair of long thin resilient arms 16, 18 that in their undistorted shape are curved and overlap to enclose a generally circular space 22 and may be straightened to admit a rod or rail into the space. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Air Fresheners and Their Use This invention relates to novel air fresheners and to their use.
The invention is directed in one aspect to providing a fragrance containing sheet that has a long effective life and can be moulded on injection moulding machinery with a short cycle time. Thus the invention provides an air freshener of deformable sheet plastics material formed with a hook by which it can be suspended, the sheet being of thickness 0.2-1.0 cms and formed of 550% by weight of a fragrance mixed into 9550% by weight of a plastics material comprising about 82% by weight of high melting low density polyethylene and about 18% by weight of polyvinyl acetate.
The above composition has desirable properties of flexibility and softness and permits the perfume to movetherethrough.
When used to deodorise a dishwasher the sheet can incorporate a solid lemon fragrance and when used to deodorise a refrigerator it can incorporate a green apple fragrance. In either case it will be hooked or clipped onto a tray wire of the appliance.
But the air freshener of the invention can be used in other locations such as wardrobes and clothes cupboards, in which case it may be suspended from a clothes rail or curtain hanger and may have a flower or spiece fragrance.
The invention is directed in a further aspect to an airfreshenerbased on a fragrance dispersed in a plastics sheet that can be clipped or suspended onto a clothes rail but which is sufficiently versatile that it can hang from much smaller rods or bars such as a coat-hanger.
The invention further provides an air freshener of resfifently deformable sheet plastics material 0.02- 1.0 cms thick comprising 550%, preferably 1040 weight % of a fragrant material dispersed in the plastics material so as to migrate through and escape from the surface of the sheet with time, the air freshener comprising a body, a clip region and a neck region joining the neck to the body, said clip region being formed with a pair of overlapping concave clip arms that when undeflected enclose a generally circular space and which may be straightened to admit a rod or bar into the space and returned to suspend the article from the rod or bar.
The invention yet further provides a method of blocking odours in a wardrobe which comprises suspending from a clothes rail or from a coat hanger in said wardrobe an air freshener as aforesaid.
The invention will now be further illustrated in the following example.
EXAMPLE Base material was made by compounding high melting low density polyethylene (density 0.915 0.920; melt 40 at 23"C) with a thermal compound of tha low density polyethylene and polyvinyl acetate so that the resultant composition had a polyvinyl acetate content of 18% by weight. The resultant composition was further compounded with 1% by weight of lemon yellow dyestuff. Lemon fragrance was compounded into low density polyethylene (melt 20 at 23"C) at an appropriate high proportion to give a perfume master composition. The pigmented base material and the perfume master composition were dry blended and charged into an injection moulding machine having a cooled steel mould.By this means a lemon-shaped and sized article was moulded in thickness about 4 mm having a resilient clip formation at one end and a through hole for a suspension string at the other. Up to about 35% by weight of the final article may be fragrance, or even up to 40 or 50%. Other fragrances of different articles may be present in more modest amount 525% by weight.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figures 1-3 are respectively front, plan and side views of a wardrobe air freshener according to the invention.
In the drawings there is shown a spice-or flowerscented air freshener in the form of a plastics sheet about 4 mm thick and containing about 18% by weight fragrance dispersed through the sheet. Over time the fragrance migrates to the surface of the sheet and escapes into the air and a life of from six months to one year in normal use is expected before the fragrance declines to an ineffective level. The sheet is divided into a body portion 10, a neck portion 12 and a clip portion generally indicated as 14. The clip portion comprises a pair of part circular arms 16, 18 of dissimilar length and each thin and strip-like. The arms 16, 18 are formed at their ends with generally circular retaining knobs 20 that touch one another as shown. The arms 16, 18 can be straightened to admit a wardrobe curtain rail which they grip from underneath to suspend the air freshener. The arms 16, 18 define a closed central circular space 22 about 1 inch (2.54 cms) in diameter which will conform to the size of many wardrobe hanging rails. They can also suspend the freshener from smaller objects such as a clothes hanger, and the contacting heads 20 assist in retaining the freshener thereon. The body 10 is apertured at 24 to accept a hanging wire or string for use where the clip portion 14 cannot be used.
