Abstract

A game apparatus which comprises a pack of playing cards simulates the game of snooker. A first plurality of cards, typically 18 in number, are scoring cards simulating red balls. Two scoring cards are also provided simulating each of the six snooker colours and penalty cards are provided simulating penalty shots of the game of snooker such as missed, foul or snookered shots. The description sets out the rules for playing the game. The preferred pack contains 52 cards.

Description

SPECIFICATION Game apparatus This invention relates to a game apparatus.
It is an object of the invention to provide a new or improved game apparatus for playing a "parlour game" simulating snooker.
According to the invention there is provided a game apparatus comprising a plurality of similar playing pieces; a first plurality of which are scoring pieces adapted to represent snooker balls of different colours and hence different scoring values; and a second plurality of which are penalty pieces adapted to represent penalty shots of the game of snooker such as missed, foul or snookered shots.
The playing pieces may comprise a pack of playing cards, marked to indicate the scoring and penalty pieces.
In a preferred form, a pack of 52 playing cards include 18 scoring cards simulating red balls; two scoring cards simulating each of 6 "colours"; 6 penalty cards each simulating a "snooker"; 8 penalty cards each simulating a "foul"; and 8 penalty cards each simulating a "miss".
A game may be played according to the following rules so as to simulate a game of snooker.
RULES The object of the game is to win points and frames.
Playing Pieces The playing pieces comprise cards, each card being either a scoring card or a penalty card.
The scoring cards having the following values, corresponding to the values of similar coloured balls in snooker.
Red 1 "Colours" Yellow 2 Green 3 Brown 4 Blue 5 Pink 6 Black7 The penalty cards comprise "foul", "snooker" and "miss" or white ball cards.
Instructions for Play The game can be played by two or more players.
The cards are shuffled and dealt to the players with seven cards being dealt to each player and an extra card being dealt (totalling 8) to the player who is to start. The remainder of the pack is placed face down on the table. The first player must put down a card other than a "colour" as set out above, that is he must put down either a red card or a penalty card.
The following player then plays a card on top and play continues until one player puts down his last card.
Scoring Points Cards must be played in the order permitted in the game of snooker, that is red-colour-red- colour-red-colour The points associated with the cards are added up as play continues and this running total is the "break" score. When one player cannot continue in the red colour order, the break is finished and the preceding player then receives the totalled points plus any penalty points.
A "miss", "foul" or"snooker" card may be played at any time butwill incur the following penalties.
Miss This card represents a missed shot when a snooker player fails to make contact with an object ball. A player playing the "miss" card must always pick up one card from the pack. Playing a "miss" card ends the break and the total points for the break go to the preceding player.
Foul Card A player who plays a "foul" card must pick up two cards from the deck. The preceding player is awarded the points accumulated in the break which comes to an end with the playing of the "foul" card.
The preceding player is also awarded four points for the foul. if the "foul" card is played on top of a colour card having a value greater than four, namely the blue, pink or black card, then the foul gives away extra points to the preceding player according to the value of that colour.
Snooker Card When a "snooker" card is played, the following player must pick up two cards from the pack unless he can also play a "snooker" card in return, in which case the player following him must pick up four cards or play a "snooker". The player who plays the last "snooker" card wins the points from the break.
General Rules A break must start with the playing of a "red" card. If a player cannot put one of his cards down at his turn, he much pick up one card from the pack.
Play continues, turning the playing cards over if necessary for reuse, until one player plays his last card and wins the frame. A frame may not be won by playing either a "miss" card or a "foul" card.
Although the foregoing description and rules refer to the use of playing pieces in the form of cards, it will be appreciated that the playing pieces could be of other forms, for example counters, pegs or balls, the game being played according to the rules as set out above but with references to the cards being considered as references to other playing pieces.
A suitable scoring device can be provided, for example a peg board, a score chart or an abacus style counter.
