Abstract

A hatch-back vehicle is constructed and provided with means to form an uninterrupted level platform from facia to trailgate. The conversion can be easily and quickly effected for the 'passenger' side only thereby enhancing the vehicle's load capacity and providing a base for a full length sleeping bunk or for both sides of the vehicle thereby providing a double bunk (mobile tent) which can provide comfortable sleeping accommodation for two people. In this latter form the vehicle can form the basis of a frame tent by attaching an awning or extension to the raised tailgate. To provide the half or full width platform, the uphostery of the front seat 'backs' is removed by unzipping. The backs are then folded forward to a horizontal position supported by integral legs which pivot out of the seat back and stand on the floor of the vehicle. A bridge piece is placed between the front seat 'back' and the lowered rear seat 'back'. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Convertible vehicle seats Performance The equipment, once installed, must allow the user to convert the interior into 'passenger side' or 'both sides' platform without the use of any tools. Each seat conversion must take only a few seconds more than adjusting the position of a normal car seat. The bridge pieces when out of use must be stored in such a way as to cause minimum inconvenience and should reduce load space as little as possible. The passenger side platform in addition to providing extra load space and a base for a full length bunk can also be adapted to carry special equipment and an ambulance stretcher.
Physical The equipment consists of two stages of conversion 1] Passenger side only 2] Passenger and driver's side Each stage is converted by means of a purpose built front seat and bridge piece. The seat consists of a conventional seat base but an inovative seat back. The seat back consists of a laminated plate covered by zipped quickly removable upholstery. The rake of the seat back is adjustable in the conventional way and can fold forward to a horizontal position. The forward edge when in the horizontal position is supported by legs which pivot out of the plate and rest in rubber feet on the floor of the car. The plate is drilled with a number of holes into which can be inserted various pieces of equipment eg a bulk head plate to the left of the driver's seat.
Dimensions The dimensions of the seat back platform and bridge piece will vary according to the model of car in which fitted: typical dimensions for a Ford Fiesta are as follows: 'Single' Length of seat back 65cms Length of bridge piece 50cms Length of platform (facia to tailgate) 205cms Width of platform at front seat position 65cms 'Double' Length of platform (facia to tailgate) 205 cms Width of platform (between sides of carfull width
CLAIMS 1. The front seat back rest folds flat by virtue of the removable upholstery.
2. The platform provided by claim 1 is horizontal and securely supported.
3. The bridge piece allows the full length of the car/van to be utilised and provides a rapid conversion to either mode.
