Abstract

In a thin strip rolling mill, the transverse adjustment of banks of nozzles 8, which are adjustable independently of one another transversely to the direction of travel of the strip, is controlled by the position determined by measuring devices 12 of the edges 14, 15 of the strip as it leaves a roll stand. The roll cooling and/or lubricating device is suitable particularly for controlling the tension of the strip over the width of the latter by a zonal alteration of the effective diameter of the bodies of the rolls and/or by influencing the lubrication of the rolls within the limits of an adjustment of flatness. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Roll-cooling and/or -lubricating device for a cold strip rolling mill The present invention relates to a roll-cooling and/or -lubricating device for a cold strip rolling mill, especially a thin strip rolling mill, having spray nozzles arranged over the width of the strip. Such devices can be used for adjusting the tension of the strip over the width thereof by a zonal alteration of the effective diameter of the roll body and/or an influencing of the roll lubrication within the limits of an adjustment of flatness.
The requirements in regard to accuracy of size and shape of cold rolled thin strip material have increased to a substantial extent in the course of the development of rolling technology and subsequent treatment. An ideal cold rolled strip should not only be of the same thickness throughout its length and width, but should also lie completely flat. In addition, the flatness should also be maintained when the strip is sub-divided in the course of the subsequent treatment.
Only temporarily variable influences which are not determined by other technological requirements are suitable as adjusting means for the control of flatness. Thus, the adjusting means which can be used for this purpose are restricted to cooling and lubrication of the rolls, bending back of the rolls and tilting of the rolls perpendicularly to the rolling plane.
Cooling and lubrication have become of increased importance in the realm of cotrolling flatness and thickness of the strip. The roll cooling and roll lubricating devices with stationarily arranged banks of nozzles that have been used hitherto do not in any way satisfy the onerous requirements in the realm of flatness and thickness control.
The problem underlying the invention is to develop a roll cooling and lubricating device for cold strip rolling mills which has, compared with known devices of this kind, a substantially improved performance as regards cooling and lubrication of the rolls over precisely limited surface regions of the roll bodies.
This problem is solved by the features of the characterising clause of the patent claim.
The roll cooling and lubricating device according to the invention is distinguished by the advantage which can be gathered from the statement of the problem.
The invention is explained below in detail with reference to the drawing of the roll cooling and lubricating device installed in a fourhigh thin strip rolling mill. There are shown diagrammatically: Figure 1 the plan view of the cooling and lubricating device according to the invention incorporated in a four-high rolling mill and Figure 2 a perspective representation of the set of rolls of a four-high rolling mill provided with the roll cooling and lubricating device according to Fig. 1.
The roll cooling and lubricating device according to Figs. 1 and 2 for the working rolls 1,2 and the supporting rolls 3,4 of a four-high rolling mill consists of one bank of nozzles 5 for each of the backing rolls 3,4 and three banks of nozzles 6 to 8 for each of the working rolls 1,2. Spraying nozzles 9 for the application of cooling oil and/or emulsions to the rolls 1 to 4 are incorporated in the banks of nozzles 5 to 8. The banks of nozzles 5 to 7 are stationary, whereas the banks of nozzles 8 are displaceable by the driving means 10 transversely to the direction of travel a of the strip across the width of the latter. Moreover, the distance between the banks of nozzles 8 and the set of rolls 11 is adjustable. Finally, provision may be made for continuous mutual adjustability transversely to the direction of travel a of the strip and for a rotary adjustment of the nozzles of both banks of nozzles 8.
The supply from time to time of roll oil and/or emulsion for the adjustable banks of nozzles is pressure-controlled and/or quantitycontrolled and/or temperature-controlled.
Measuring devices 12 are mounted on the strip outlet side beyond the set of rolls 11, one on each side of the path of travel of the strip, for determining the position of the edges 14, 15 of the thin strip 13 in relation to the centre-line 16-16 of the rolls.
The measuring devices 12 are pre-positioned with the aid of servomotors 17 at a predetermined nominal spacing from the exact centre-line of the path of travel of the strip 13. In operation, the measuring devices 12 which scan the edges 14, 15 of the travelling band 13 transmit continuous signals which, when the strip 13 travels eccentrically, vary in proportion to the change of position of the edges 14,15 of the strip with reference to the centre-line 16-16 of the rolls. When the strip 13 travels eccentrically, the displaceable banks of nozzles 8, which are adjusted for travel of the strip along a central path, are readjusted transversely to the direction of travel a of the strip according to the position determined by the measuring devices 12 of the edges 14,15 of the strip on the output side.
As a result of the readjustment of the banks of nozzles 8 transversely to the direction of travel a of the strip when the latter travels eccentrically and a mutual adjustability as well as a rotational adjustment of the spray nozzles 9 in the banks of nozzles 8, the positions of the regions of the rolls that are sprayed, the widths of the said regions and the spray pattern of the nozzles are accurately adjusted.
The control of pressure, temperature and quantity of the roll oil supplied to the banks of nozzles 8 or of the emulsion supplied thereto influences the cooling of the working rolls 1,2 and hence the amount and speed of the alteration of the effective diameter of the bodies of the rolls or of the lubrication of the working rolls 1,2.
