Abstract

A height adjustable manhole frame comprises a sub-frame (B), which is fixed in a position below the ground or road surface, and a moveable frame (A), supporting the lid. The movable frame (A) is arranged telescopically inside the frame (B) and is supported on threaded rods fixed to the underside of frame (B) by means of locking nuts, <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION The moveable manhole grate The idea of the moveable manhole grate is hoped will be beneficial to corporations in their constant fight for better roads in the future.
It is intended that the "MOVEABLE GRATE", after installation, will in the future be able to be adjusted to meet fluctuations in road surfacings, caused by subsidence and traffic etc... etc...
Where as now positive digging up of manhole frames, if major lifting is necessary, causes some difficulties to traffic, because of ramping.
This could be avoided with the "MOVEABLE GRATE".
Also, where it becomes necessary to shave roads, the "MOVEABLE GRATE" could be lowered temporarily, until new tarmac surface could be laid.
DESCRIPTION OF THE MANHOLE GRATE 1. The drawing show frame "A" supporting the grate lid, slotted down between the sub-frame "B".
2. Sub-frame "B" would be cast separate to frame "A".
3. Sub-frame "B" consists of a base with an inside and outside face, with gussett strengtheners to the outside face, all moulded together in the foundry.
4. The frame would be made to the shape required e.g. round, square, or triangular etc.
Rises and falls would also be cast to the top of the base as shown on drawings for drainage. 5. The moveable frame "A" will have the same shape as frame "B" and will have threaded rods at required centres, fastened to the underside as shown on drawings.
6. Holes for these rods would also be formed in the base to frame "B".
7. Frame "A" is then lowered down, through frame "B" as shown on drawings.
8. Nuts and washers are used in the lifting and lowering process as shown on drawings.
NOTE 1. The "GRATE" can be made in any shape or size. It can be cast to suit any weight and strength requirements.
2. The drawing of the "GRATE" is manually operated, but with developement, could be mechanically, electrically or hydraulically operated.
3. The "GRATE" principal shown on drawings, could be beneficial to all statutory authorities. e.g. G.P.O. WATER-BOARDS ETC...
KEY TO COMPONENTS 1. Heavy duty grate lid 2. Moveable frame "A" with rebate for lid 3. Static frame "B" with falls to top of base for drainage, also cut away holes to allow adjustment of nuts, formed in inside face.
Strengthening gussetts to outside face.
Front and back faces, base and gussetts all cast as one to form frame "B".
4. Threaded rods connects to underside of frame "A" and passing through base of frame "B" held with nuts and washers.
NOTES Drawing shows section through square type manhole frame, but working model is of triangular shape, as is isametric drawing shown.
The section through the square type manhole frame as drawn, showing the threaded rods and nut arrangement is exactly the same as the side section of the triangular model.
Slight modefication to area of threaded rods may have to be done, because of strength requirements if and when foundry people are involved.
E.G. a recess may be required to inside of both faces of frame type "B" for larger rods.
1. A manhole cover assembly comprising a frame made as two telescoped parts, each of which is a one piece casting, and provided with means for securing the parts together in any verticle, varied positions. Whereby the outer part may remain fixed in a static position, whilst the inner part is adjusted relative thereto until the lid or cover which it supports is level with the road surface, or similar. In which the securing means, comprising a number of threaded rods. Each rod, fastened in the foundry to the underside of the top moveable frame, and corresponding downwards through the bottom sub frame and held with nuts and washers as drawing indicates. The type of nut, washer and threaded rod would be strong enough to take the load as required.
2. An manhole cover and frame assembly according to claim 1. where in the assembly can be square, round or triangular, and held with threaded rods and locking nuts are strategic points to withstand downwards pressures.
3. A manhole cover assembly, substantially as here in described with reference to the accompanying of drawings.
