Description

SPECIFICATION Apparatus for continuously welding multiply film webs BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Field of the Invention This invention relates to apparatus for continuously welding superimposed plies of thermoplastic synthetic film, which are moved between mutually opposite heaters facing each other, wherein each heater comprises a heat radiator, which is mounted in a housing, which on that side which faces the plastic film has a slot that extends throughout the length of the heat radiator.
Description of the Prior Art Such apparatus is known, e.g., from German Patent Specification 2,145,870. That known apparatus has the disadvantage that the welding power is not sufficient for welding a plurality of quickly traveling film plies. Another disadvantage resides in that the rate at which heat is delivered by the known apparatus to the film cannot be adjusted in dependence on the speed of travel of the film through the welding apparatus so that welds differing in quality will be obtained at different speeds of travel of the film.
Summary of the Invention For this reason it is an object of the invention so to design an apparatus of the kind described first hereinbefore that it will satisfactorily comply with the requirements regarding an adequate transfer of heat and regarding a control of the heat rate in dependence on the speed of travel of the film.
In accordance with the invention that object is accomplished in that each of the two housings is formed in addition to the slot with at least one inlet opening for admitting hot air.
The slots may be replaced by respective rows of outlet orifices.
Desirable further features of the invention are recited in the dependent claims.
Brief Description of the Drawing An illustrative embodiment of the invention will now be described more in detail with reference to the single figure of the drawing showing that embodiment in a perspective view, partly in section.
Two tubular carrier sections 2 and 3 are mounted in a side frame 1 for adjustment in height relative to the film web. For the sake of simplicity the drawing shows only how the carrier section 2 is secured to the side frame 1. The carrier section 3 is similarly connected to the side frame 1. As is apparent from the drawing two brackets 4 and 5 are secured to the tubular carrier section 2 and levers 6 and 7 are pivoted at one end to said brackets 4 and 5, respectively. The other ends of said levers are interconnected by a link 8. An intermediate portion of each of the levers 6 and 7 is connected to a carrier shaft 9 or 10. The carrier shaft 9 is freely rotatably mounted in the side frame 1. The carrier shaft 10 constitutes the output shaft of a stepping motor 11, which is mounted on an angle bracket 12 that is connected by screws to the side frame 1.
It is apparent that the position of the carrier section 2 relative to the film web will depend on the number of steps performed by the stepping motor 11. The carrier section 3 can similarly be adjusted.
The two tubular carrier sections 2 and 3 are made of insulating material and define respective hot air supply passages 13 and 14, which are enclosed on all sides by the carrier sections and by housings 15 and 16. The two housings 15, 16 are formed on confronting sides with air discharge slots 17 and 18, which extend throughout the length of the housings. Those wall portions of the housings 15 and 16 which define the hot air supply passages 13 and 14 are formed with a multiplicity of air inlet openings 19 and 20. Air is blown into the hot air supply passages 13 and 14 through hot air supply pipes 21 and 22 and enters the housings 15 and 16 through the openings 19 and 20 and is discharged from the housings 15 and 16 through the slots 17 and 18. The air is heated by heat radiators 23 and 24, which are mounted in the housings in a manner which is not shown.
The multiply film web 25 is welded by the two air jets discharged through the slots 17 and 18. The spacing of the two housings 15 and 16 is reduced or increased by means of the stepping motors in dependence on the speed of travel of the multiply film web 25 in such a manner that the hot air jet always discharged at a constant rate from the slot will be mixed with a smaller or larger quantity of ambient air in dependence on the spacing of the housings 15, 16 from the cooling bars 38 to 41 so that seam welds of uniform quality will always be obtained. Only one of the two stepping motors is shown and designated 11.
As is apparent from the drawing each of the carrier sections 2 and 3 is embraced by two U-shaped members 26 and 27. For the sake of simplicity, only one of the two Ushaped members embracing each carrier section is shown. The two U-shaped members 26 and 27 are connected to the side frame 1 by bolts 28 and 29, which can be displaced along slots 32 and 33 to adjust the U-shaped members 26 and 27 in height when the screws 30 and 31 have been loosened.
The free ends of the U-shaped members 26 and 27 carry horizontal carrying bars 34, 35, 36 and 37. Each carrying bar is connected to a cooling bar 38, 39, 40 or 41 at that end of the carrying bar which is remote from the Ushaped member. Said cooling bars are hollow and flown through by water. The confronting sides of the cooling bars 38, 39 or 40, 41 of each pair define a triangular free space, which flares toward the adjacent housing 15 or 16.
In dependence on the speed of travel of the multiply film web 25, the housings 15 and 16 extend into said spaces to a larger or smaller depth. In dependence on the number and thickness of the film plies, the bolts 28 and 29 are adjusted to define the positions of the cooling bars 38, 39 and 40, 41.
As has been stated hereinbefore, the spacing of the two housings 15 and 16 is adjusted in dependence on the speed of travel of the film web 25. This adjustment is effected in that the stepping motor is caused to perform a larger or smaller number of steps.
Only the upper stepping motor 11 is shown.
In case of a standstill of the multiply film web 25 the carrier sections 2 and 3 and also the housings 15 and 16 are moved sufficiently apart so that the air discharge slot 17 is disposed above the top of the pair of cooling bars 38 and 39 and the air discharge slot 18 is disposed below the bottom of the pair of cooling bars 40 and 41. Air is still blown out of the slots 17 and 18 during such standstill period but the air jets which are then discharged are deflected. For this purpose, cooling air supply pipes 42 and 43 are connected to the carrying bars 35 and 37 and extend parallel to the carrier sections 2 and 3 and are formed with air discharge slots 44 and 45.
Cold air is blown out through the slots 44 and 45. These two jets of cooling air will then deflect the hot air jets discharged from the slots 17 and 18 so that the hot air jets can no longer impinge on the film web 25.
In the direction of travel of the film web 25 indicated by the arrow A the hot air supply pipes 21, 22 are inclined to include an acute angle with the carrier sections 2 and 3. In the embodiment illustrated by way of example a seam weld is formed only on one side of the film web 25 and the film web 25 remains unwelded in its right-hand portion in the drawing; that portion is supported by a roller table 46. It will be understood that more than one welding apparatus of the kind which is illustrated may be provided so that parallel seams in a selected number can be formed, if desired.
