Abstract

A support post comprises an extrusion 1 of constant cross- section, at least one channel section 2 being provided and preferably three spaced and located as shown, each channel section accommodating an infill strip for receiving bracketry. An area of the post is provided with an electrically operable light source (within clip arrangement 9) and a light diffuser 7 is fitted between two free ends of the support post across that area of the post in which the 2 light source is located. A cover plate 17 may be provided as may a support ballast 19 for the light source. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to supporting posts This invention is concerned with an improvement in a supporting post. More particularly, it is concerned with a supporting post which includes the facility for providing illumination in addition to its conventional function of supporting bracketry or other fixtures.
Conventional supporting posts are generally aluminium extrusions of constant cross-section and indeterminate length which are used to house slotted infill strips for the purpose of receiving bracketry, for displaying items of merchandise. It is an object of the present invention to provide an improvement in this type of supporting post by providing the facility of a light source to be contained within the area bounded by the support post.
According to this invention there is provided a support post comprising an extrusion of constant cross-section, which is provided with formations defining at least one, preferably three, channel sections the or each of which is fitted with a slotted infill strip that can receive a bracket or other fixture therein, an area of the post being provided with an electrically operable light source and a light diffuser preferably being fitted between two free ends of the support post across that area of the post in which the light source is fitted.
Preferably the light source comprises a fluorescent lamp which may be secured to clips connected to a centrally positioned wall of the support post. The light diffuser may be of arcuate construction and may be constructed of acrylic or styrene, for example.
In a modification of the invention the support post includes a light fixing attached to an external wall thereof, for example a spotlight fixture, either in addition to the light source contained with the post or instead of same.
Most preferably the post will comprise three substantially identical channel portions each of which carries its own slotted infill strip, in an arrangement substantially as shown in the accompanying drawings.
In order that the invention may be readily carried into effect three embodiments thereof will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings by way of example only and in which: Figure 1 shows respectively a view of the extruded post alone and the post in combination with the light source, diffuser and infill strips, Figure la illustrates the cross-section of post 1, Figure 2 shows similar views of a modified post which incorporates an additional external light source, Figure 2a illustrates the cross-section of alternative post 1, Figure 3 shows similar views of a further post adapted to include a reflector, Figure 4 shows an alternative rounded post with reflector, and Figure 5 shows a more preferred cross-section of post and cover.
Referring firstly to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, an aluminium extruded post 1 is provided with three channel sections 2 which are defined by wall members of the post and a connecting web 10 defines an area 3 in which the light source in the form of a fluorescent tube 8 is located by means of terry clips 9. The free end 6 of the support post 1 form a locating postion for a light diffuser 7 of acrylic or styrene material.
Within each of the channels 2 an infill strip 4 is provided which has slots 5 for receiving bracketry (not shown).
Referring more particularly to Fig. 2, a support post 1 of different cross-section than the Fig. 1 embodiment is shown. The channel portions 2 are in particular spaced further apart and an external wall member 11 is provided with an additional spotlight 12 securely fixed by retaining member 13. In the embodiment this additional spotlight 12 is used in conjunction with the fluorescent lamp 8 located within the area 3 of the post defined by the connecting web 10 and the ends 6 of the extrusion. A diffuser 7 is present to shield the lamp fixings from view.
Both embodiments of the invention therefore provide a supporting post which can not only house the conventional slotted infill strips but also houses a light source for providing illumination on one side thereof which is desirable in certain installations where additional illumination is required.
The extruded post of Fig. 3 has been speci aliy adapted to receive an arcuate reflector 14 seated within projections 15 formed on the walls 16 of two of the channel sections 3. A fluorescent lamp 8 is provided between reflector 14 and diffuser 7 supported by known means (not shown). Immediately adjacent the diffuser is an extruded cover plate 17 to enhance the appearance and provide a sectional view substantially corresponding to the opposite face 18 of the post. The cover plate may be used as end caps at the top and bottom of the assembly and/or as intermediate covering strips.
The arrangement of Fig. 3 is preferred as having a neat and attractive appearance whilst housing a source of illumination and reflector thereof in a compact manner whilst still providing three slotted infill strips for receiving display bracketry or connecting members.
Referring lastly to Figs. 4 and 5, an arrangement substantially equivalent to Fig. 3 is depicted, the supporting post 1 having a rounded external appearance, the cover 17 and diffuser 7 being arcuate to match and providing an overall circular arrangement. The same reference numerals have been used throughout. Additionally, a ballast support 19 is provided behind the reflector 14.
A more preferred arrangement is shown in Fig. 5 again with reflector, ballast and securing clip. Three channel sections 2 are maintained to receive infill strips (not shown).
