Abstract
A toothbrush with integral toothpaste supply comprises a toothbrush with a hollow stem and a hole in the top of the brush head through which toothpaste is propelled into the bristles, attached to a hollow body, either factory-injected with toothpaste or containing a toothpaste- filled reservoir. Means for propelling the toothpaste out of the body, down the toothbrush stem, out of the hole in the brush head and into the bristles comprises a piston 11 driven by a central screw mechanism 12 activated by knob 10. In alternative embodiments the means for propelling toothpaste out of the body comprises an air pump located in the neck of the brush stem (Figs. 10-13). A cap is provided to cover the brush head, said cap having means 16 to seal the hole in the brush head and prevent the toothpaste drying out. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Toothbrush with integral toothpaste supply
This invention relates to a toothbrush with integral supply of toothpaste.
Essentially, the invention consists of a conventional toothbrush head with a hollow stem and hole in the top of brush head; attached to a hollow body containing toothpaste. A mechanism propels the toothpaste out ofthe body, down the hollow stem and, via a hole in the brush head, into the bristles.
The device affords the user a quick, convenient method of teeth cleaning in circumstances where this would not normally be practicable.
A cap keeps the brush head clean andthe brush head can be sealed (by a plug or other means) to preventthe toothpaste drying out and blocking the head.
There are two alternative methods oftoothpaste supply:
Toothpaste to be factory-injected directly into 'disposable' body, or
Reservoirs to be inserted into body by the user.
When empty,furthertoothpaste supplies would be available in the form of replacement bodies, see figures 2, 11-1 3c, or reservoirs, see figures 4, 10--10d.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows in cross-section the factoryinjected body in which piston 11 is driven by a central screw mechanism 12, activated by knob 10. Two ribs 13 on the inside ofthe body preventthe piston turning.
It is envisaged that the body of the tooth brush would be transparent, allowing the userto see how much toothpaste is left.
The screw 12 driving the piston 11 is geared so that one revolution of knob 10 deliversthe correct amount of toothpaste to the brush head. A 'clickstop' mechanism (not shown) indicates this to the user.
Figures2 and 3 show howthe invention would be supplied, i.e. one or more toothpaste-filled bodies sealed with cap 15, together with separate brush/cap/ plug.
Additionally: Figure 2 shows vent hole 14in bodywhich maybe required to facilitate the injection of tooth paste into the body. This would prevent air being trapped inside body, which may impede toothpaste. A quarterturn of knob 10 then seals the body for life.
Figure 3 shows plug 16. Once toothbrush has been used and there is toothpaste inside the stem and brush head 17, this plug prevents paste drying out if the device is to be stored without use for extended
periods. See also Figures 14to 19 for alternatives.
Figure 4 shows alternative reservoir supply. This
may be moulded in a ribbed configuration so that it
collapses in a concertina-like fashion under pressure from piston. Cap 15 keeps it sealed until used. Refill is first screwed into neck of brush stem and then body
attached, see Figures 5 and 6.
Figure5shows a method of driving the piston which is similarto that employed in lipstick cosmetics, i.e. piston 11 has two pins projecting through grooves in inner sleeve 19 into a screw thread 18 cut into outer sleeve 20.Turning knob 10 revolves inner sleeve 19 inside stationary outer sleeve 20 and drives piston 11 forwards down screw thread 18 in outer sleeve 20. Because piston 11 is rotating as it drives forward, it is equipped with a separate top plate connected to piston 11 by a ball and socket, see FigureS. This absorbs the rotation of piston 11 and prevents the reservoir from becoming distorted and fractured.
Figure 6shows cutaway view of piston 11 with top plate and ball and socket as described above. Also shown by the arrows is the path ofthe toothpaste out of the reservoirthrough to brush head.
Figure 7shows a third method of driving the piston,which is in theform of an air pump at the base ofthe body. This could be used with eitherthe factory-injected body toothpaste supply or alternative reservoir supply. If employed with the reservoir method, a relief valve 21 would enablethe piston to be returned to the base ofthe bodyto enable the insertion of a new reservoir. Valve 21 is illustrated in the open position.

Figure 10 shows another version employing collapsible reservoir25,whereby brush head is opened, toothpaste propelled and brush head closed in one motion of applying hand pressure to end of brush head. Figures 1 0a to 1 Od show this in sequence.

Reservoir 25 collapses progressively as it empties. Mechanism returnsto position shown in Figure 10. Brush head is retained on stem by means of a peg on stem running in a parallel groove in brush head, orviceversa (not shown).
Figure 11 shows a variation on Figures 10 to 1 Od above wherein piston 11 is drawn up body by vacuum to compact paste against pump.

Figure 13 shows a further method of opening brush head, propelling paste and closing brush head in one action similar two that shown in Figures 10 to 12c. Figures 13a to 13c show this in sequence.

Figure 13c shows mechanism fully compressed and piston 11 at the end of its travel. Hand pressure to end of brush head is then removed, allowing springs 26 and 27 to return mechanism to original position shown in Figure 13. However piston 11 remains in its forward position as air is drawn past pump seal (or alternatively through a non-return valve) via vents 29. Brush head is retained on stem by means of a peg on stem running in a parallel groove in brush head, or vice versa (not shown).
Figures 14 to 19 show alternative methods of sealing brush head.
Figure 14 End of brush clips into cap so that when cap is pulled off, brush head is pulled past retaining dimples 34 on brush stem to align holes in stem and head. Once toothpaste has been supplied, the user pushes the head back, thereby sealing head. If user fails to do this, the head will be pressed back by the cap when it is replaced. Brush head is retained on stem by means of a peg running in a parallel groove in brush head, or vice versa (not shown).
Figure 15 operates in the same way as Figure 14 above. However, lip 35 on brush step necessitates the use of a square hole in brush head.
Figure 16 employs the use of a 'twist-and-pull-off" cap held by a parallel rib. A half turin releases the cap allowing itto be pulled off. The end of the brush head slots into a moulding inside the top of the cap, in a spanner-like fashion. As the cap is twisted the brush head rotates over retaining dimples 34 to align holes in brush head and stem, the cap is removed and the brush used. When the cap is replaced the brush head rotates back to seal head.
Note that the use of the cap in Figures 13, 14 and 15 may be discounted. A cap as shown in Figure 1 may be used and the sealing mechanisms operated manually.
Figure 17 Here the central section of the brush slides backwards and forwards to open and close the brush head. The thumb is used to slide the section back towards the body to expose the hole, paste is propelled through the hole and the section slid back to seal the hole prior to brushing the teeth.
When the sliding section is in the closed position the brush head resembles a conventional toothbrush as there is a complete set of bristles.
Figure 18 is an adaptation of Figure 17 wherein pressure from a spring 36 is used to close brush head automatically. This would lend itself for use with toothpaste propellent methods described in
Figures 10 to 1 3c as it uses the same backwards movement.
Figure 19 This method of sealing brush head is particularly suited to toothpaste propellent methods shown in Figures 1/2 and 5/6. Spring-loaded plunger is forced back by pressure of toothpaste allowing passage of paste through hole to brush head. Knob 10 (see Figures 1/2, 5/6) is then turned back 41-tu rn releasing spring-loaded plunger to re-seal head.
Claims (10)
1. A toothbrush with integral toothpaste supply comprising:
Toothbrush head with hollow stem and hole in top of brush head through which toothpaste is propelled into bristles.
A hollow body to contain toothpaste supply in one of two forms; (a) Tooth paste factory-injected directly into disposable bodies, or
(b) Replaceable reservoir where the body is retained indefinitely.
A mechanism to propel the toothpaste out of the body, down the brush stem, out of the hole in the brush head and into the bristles.
A cap to protect the brush head and a mechanism to seal the brush head and prevent toothpaste drying out.
2. A toothbrush with integral toothpaste supply as described in Claim 1, wherein the toothpaste is propelled by a piston driven by a central screw mechanism in the body as described in Figures 1,2 and 3.
3. Atoothbrush with integral toothpaste supply as described in Claim 1, wherein the toothpaste is contained in a replaceable reservoir which collapses under pressure from a piston driven by a 'lipsticktype' mechanism in the body as described in Figures 4,5 and 6.
4. A toothbrush with integral toothpaste supply as described in Claims 1 and 3, wherein the toothpaste is propelled by a piston driven by an air pump at the base of the body, as described in Figures 7,8 and 9.
5. Atoothbrush with integral toothpaste supply as described in Claim 1, wherein the toothpaste is contained in a replaceable reservoir, which collapses as toothpaste is pumped from it by a pump in neck of brush stem as described in Figures lotto 10d.
6. A toothbrush with integral toothpaste supply as described in Claims 1 and 5, wherein a piston is drawn up the body to compact toothpaste against pump as described in Figure 11.
7. A toothbrush with integral toothpaste supply as described in Claim 1, wherein toothpaste is propelled by a piston driven down body by air pump in neck of brush stem, driving toothpaste through hole in central channel as described in Figures 12 to 12c.
8. A toothbrush with integral toothpaste supply as described in Claims 1 and 7, wherein toothpaste is propelled up body by air pump as described in
Figures 13 to 13c.
9. A toothbrush with integral toothpaste supply as described in Claims 1-8 wherein the brush head is sealed by one of six alternative sealing mechanisms described in Figures 14--19.
10. A toothbrush with integral toothpaste supply substantially as described in Claims 1-4 and 6--8 wherein the toothbrush body is transparent, showing the position of the piston within the body and the amount of toothpaste therein.
