Abstract
Troughing comprising a trough (3) with a substantially rectangular, corrugated cover (2) secured to the walls of the trough by means of metal resilient clips (1). The clips are in strip form and are shaped to engage the edges of the cover and to be an interference fit with the inside opposed walls of the trough. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvements in and relating to troughing
This invention relates to troughing.
Signal cables and traction cables for railways are currently carried alongside the railway tracks in concrete ducts or troughs which have a concrete lid or cover on top in order to prevent unauthorised access and also the accumulation of debris within the trough. The concrete covers are heavy, quite expensive and prone to damage in handling. They need to be removeable for occasional servicing reasons.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a resilient clip arrangement for securing a substantially rectangular cover on a trough, the clip arrangement including two clips each having a first part for engagement about respective opposed edges of the cover and the clips each having a second part arranged to bear against a respective opposed wall of the trough, the clips being arranged, when fitted about the opposed edges of the cover and securing the cover on the trough, to bear against opposed walls of the trough in reaction against one another.
The clips may be arranged to bear against the inside walls of the trough.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided a resilient clip for incorporation in the arrangement substantially as defined in the first aspect of the invention, the clip being made of resilient strip material shaped to have, proceeding from one end to the other, a first portion which is substantially planar and with an underside for bearing on a top surface of a said cover, then a second portion extending substantially normal to said first portion for lying adjacent the edge of the cover, then a third portion extending substantially parallel to, facing and beyond said first portion so as to be able to underlie the underside of the cover, said first, second and third portions constituting said first part of the clip, and the clip further including a fourth portion extending from said third portion to said other end and being bent so as to form said second part.
The or each clip may be made of metal.
According to a third aspect of the present invention, there is provided a cover for covering a trough, the cover having a resilient clip arrangement in accordance with the first aspect of the invention or having two clips each in accordance with the second aspect of the invention, and the covering being in the form of a substantially rectangular plate.
Preferably, the plate is corrugated.
Preferably, the plate is made from unplasticised polyvinylchloride (UPVC).
For a better understanding of the invention and to show how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings, in which:~
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic perspective view of a clip in accordance with the invention,
Figure 2 is a side view of the clip shown in
Fig. 1,
Figure 3 diagrammatically illustrates an end view of a concrete trough and how a UPVC cover may be fitted on the trough by means of the clips according to the invention,
Figure 4 is a plan view of the cover,
Figure 5 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line X-X of Fig. 4, and
Figure 6 is a perspective view illustrating how the cover may be secured to the trough by means of the clips according to the invention.
Referring firstly to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, a metal resilient clip 1 is illustrated, the clip being adapted for securing a substantially rectangular cover 2 (Figs. 3 to 6) to the walls of a trough 3.
The clip 1 is in strip form and is shaped to have, proceeding from one end to the other, a first portion 1A which is substantially planar and has a underside for bearing on a top surface of the cover 2, then a second portion 1B extending substantially normal to the first por tion 1A for lying adjacent the edge of the cover 2, and then a third portion 1C extending substantially parallel to, facing and beyond the first portion 1A so as to be able to underlie the underside of the cover 2 when the clip 1 is fitted about the edge of the cover 2.
Proceeding beyond the third portion 1C there is a fourth portion 1D which is bent so as to be arranged to bear against an inside wall 3A of the trough 3 to which the cover 2 is to be secured.
Preferably, and as shown, the fourth portion 1D is provided with means to cause the clip 1 to have an interference fit with the associated wall 3A of the trough, this means in the form illustrated being constituted by two rows of dimples 4. In addition or alternatively, the clip 1 may be provided with a cutout portion (not shown) extending from the portion 1D and arranged to bear against the wall 3A.
The cover 2 is preferably provided with corrugations 2A which run across the cover from edge to edge, the cover being intended to be fitted on the trough 3 with the corrugations 2A running across the width of the trough 3.
Preferably, the dimensions of the cover 2 are such that the length is 497 mm and the width about 500 mm. The thickness of the cover 2 can be about 3.5 mm whilst the corrugations can extend over a height of about 11 mm with the distances between sets of corrugations being about 40 mm.
It will be appreciated that, with an estimated weight of 1.55 kg per cover, the covers will be considerably lighter than the concrete covers at present in use.
As illustrated in Figs. 3 and 6, the covers 2 can be securely fitted to the troughs 3 by means of pairs of opposed clips 1 bearing against the respective inside walls 3A in reaction against one another. The clips 1 are dimensioned so that their first portions 1A can fit in respective lands of the corrugations 2A.
