Abstract
A method of mounting photographic prints, for use in labelling, comprises longitudinally advancing adhesive transfer tape 2 carrying longitudinally spaced photographic prints 4 adhered thereto by the adhesive 3, and diverting the advancing tape sharply away from the main longitudinal path and then back to the main longitudinal path, each print and its underlying adhesive 3 from the tape on encountering the diversion 14 separating from the tape to continue in the main longitudinal path and re-encountering the tape downstream to be relocated on a print-free section of the tape bearing untransferred adhesive 12', at least some part of each print perimeter being left unadhered to the tape by this untransferred adhesive. Release and/or re-adhesion of the prints may be facilitated by warming. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Print mounting
The present invention relates to the production of easy-release adhesively mounted photographic prints, and is illustrated byway of example in the accompanying schematic drawing.
As shown in the drawing a band of adhesive transfer or non-carrier tape 2 has a row of photographic prints 4 spaced therealong and adhered thereto by the adhesive 3. The composite of noncarrier tape 2 and prints 4 is advanced longitudinally along a main path indicated by arrows 6, the tape for example being drawn from a roll 8 under a stack 10 of the prints which are fed at intervals from the stack onto the adhesive surface of the tape with a gap 12 between successive prints. At 14, the non-carrier tape 2 is diverted sharply out of and then back to the main path so that as each print encounters the region 14 the print along with the underlying adhesive from tape 2 becomes separated from the rest of the tape and continues along the main path to come back into engagement with the tape at the end of the diversion. The tape 2 has adhesive in the regions 12 as well as in the regions below the prints 4, and the deflection or diversion at 4 is such that each print comes back into engagement with an adhesive region 12' of the tape. The resulting product 16 thus have a row of spaced self-adhesive prints 18 adhered to a backing band 20 by relatively restricted regions 12' of adhesive on the backing band. The self-adhesive prints, having a peripheral region or regions unadhered to the backing sheet, are thus very easily released from the latter manually or by labelling machinery. The product strip can be taken up on a roll 22.
The initial release of the prints from tape 2 at the beginning of region 14, and their readhesion to the portions 12' of remaining adhesive at the end of region 14, can be facilitated by warming; thus warm air may be applied, or the region may be at least partially enclosed in an oven. The stiffness of the prints relative to the flexibility of the tape 2 facilitates the release of the prints and underlying adhesive from the tape.
The initial tape 2 may have adhesive uniformly over the whole of its receiving surface.
The adhesive may extend continuously or discontinuously over the receiving face of the initial tape 2.
It is merely essential that the adhesive should be sufficiently extensive for adequate securing of the eventual self-adhesive prints 18 to the substrates to which they are finally applied, and to provide adequate adhesive regions 12' for the reengagement of the self-adhesive prints 18 with the tape at the end of region 14.
The invention is of course applicable to the case where two or more rows of prints 4 extend side-byside along the same tape 2.
Claims (5)
1. A method of mounting photographic prints comprising longitudinally advancing adhesive trans- fertape carrying longitudinally spaced photographic prints adhered thereto by the said adhesive, and diverting the advancing tape sharply away from the main longitudinal path and then back to the main longitudinal path, each print and its contacting adhesive on encountering the diversion separating from the tape to continue in the main longitudinal path and re-encountering the tape downstream to be relocated on a print-free section of the tape bearing untransferred adhesive, at least some part of each print perimeter being left unadhered to the tape by this untransferred adhesive.
2. A method according to claim 1 including the step of warming the adhesive to facilitate the release and/or readhesion of the prints.
3. A method according to claim 1 or claim 2 in which the transfer tape has a discontinuous adhesive coating.
4. A method according to any preceding claim in which two or more rows of prints extend side-byside along the adhesive transfer tape.
5. A method of mounting photographic prints substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the drawing.
