Abstract

A receptacle (1) for holding a liquid has a transparent base eg. a beer glass and a member (2) which has a design thereon is attached to the base of the receptacle (1) so that the design is viewable through the base (3). The member may be permanently attached or may be a removable transfer. It may be received in a recess in the base, and may be absorbant and have a rubber or frictional lower surface for steadying the receptacle on a table. The member may be embedded in the receptacle during moulding. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to the display of designs on receptacles This invention relates to the display of designs on receptacles.
According to the invention there is provided a receptacle for holding a liquid, the receptacle having a transparent base to which a member, which includes a design, is attached so that the design is viewable through the base.
In a preferred embodiment, the design is formed as a transfer which is affixed to the base of a beer glass.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows a straight beer glass including a displayed design.
With reference to the Figure, a beer glass 1 is shown. The beer glass is formed from glass or transparent plastic and has a transfer 2 externally affixed to the base 3 of the glass. The transfer 2 has -a design imprinted upon it so that, when the transfer is affixed to the base 3, the design is viewable from the inside of the glass.
The transfer 2 may be of the permanent burn-on type, or may be of the water or solvent-soluble kind.
The transfer 2 may include any desired design, and may be used for advertising as shown, for example, for advertising a mini-cab service, in conjunction with a "don't drink and drive" slogan.
Alternatively, the transfers may advertise a variety of beer sold in the public house where the glass is used.
Use of transfers which can be readily removed from the base of the glasses allows advertising to be changed by the publican, simply by removing one transfer and replacing it with another. Revenue derived from such advertisements could drastically reduce the cost of providing the glasses. If permanent burn-on transfers are used, the transfers could include a design indicating the name of the public house in which the glasses are being used, thus acting as a deterrent against theft.
While the invention has been shown applicable to a beer glass, it is equally applicable to any other kind of transparent receptacle which is suitable for holding liquids, for example tumblers or wine glasses etc.
Further, although the design has been shown presented on the base of the glass 1 by means of a transfer 2, the design could be incorporated into a member embedded in the glass during a moulding process, or alternatively, the base 3 of the glass 1 could be formed with a recess arranged to receive a disc-shaped insert which includes the design.
The transfer or insert may, on its outwardly facing surface, be provided with a rubber or other frictional surface, which would effect the further function of steadying the base of the glass on a table or bar, for example.
The transfer 2 may also be made absorbent.
1. A receptacle for holding a liquid, the receptacle having a transparent base to which a member, which includes a design, is attached so that the design is viewable through the base.
2. A receptacle as claimed in claim 1, wherein the member is a transfer affixed to the base.
3. A receptacle as claimed in claim 1, wherein the member is an insert, cooperable within a recess in the base.
4. A receptacle as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the member is absorbant.
5. A receptacle as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the member is provided with a frictional surface, opposed to the surface attached to the base.
6. A receptacle as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the receptacle is formed from glass.
7. A receptacle as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the receptacle is a beer glass.
8. A receptacle substantially as hereinbefore described and illustrated with reference to the accompanying drawing.
