Abstract

An I.C. engine is divided, structurally, into at least a cylinder housing (2), a crank shaft bearing bed (4), a bearing support (5), and a crank case (6). The materials from which each component part is made can be selected according to the respective stresses of the individual areas of these components. The cylinder housing (2) may be a light metal casting, the bearing bed (4) and/or the bearing support (5) may be a spherical graphite casting and the crank case (6) may be of plastics. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Multi-part cylinder block This invention relates to a multi-part cylinder block.
The cylinder blocks known in motor vehicle construction are for the most part cast in one piece with the upper part of the crankcase housing. As material, gray cast iron or light metal casting is used. These known cylinder blocks produced in one piece are sturdy and heavy in the case of gray cast iron, and substantially more expensive in the case of light metal casting.
The invention has therefore been developed with a view to provide a cylinder block which on the one hand offers considerable savings as regards weight, and on the other hand satisfies strength and rigidity requirements.
According to the invention there is provided a multi-part cylinder block for an internal combustion engine, in which the distribution of the block according to structural components parts is divided structurally, according to function and material, at least into a cylinder housing, a crank shaft bearing bed, a bearing support, and a crank case.
Two embodiments of multi-part engine cylinder block according to the invention will now be described in detail, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a section through a first embodiment; and Figure 2 is a section through another embodiment.
A fundamental feature of the proposed solution is the simple construction which is achieved by the separation of functions. This means that the (unitary construction) gray cast iron or light metal block used until now is replaced by a multi-part construction.
Referring to Fig. 1, a cylinder block has a cylinder housing 2 with cylinder linings 3 inserted. A bearing support 5 and a bearing bed 4 are connected to the cylinder housing 2.
A parting plane 8 runs transversely through the cylinder block 1 and separates the cylinder housing 2 from the bearing support 5. A cas ing or crank case 6, which at the same time is used as an oil sump, encloses the bearing support 6 and the bearing bed 4 and where possible is secured to this in the upper third of the cylinder housing 2. Thus, the crank case 6 is connected to the cylinder housing 2 at a position spaced from the main parting plane 8 and so as to overlap the parting plane and a lower end portion of the cylinder hous ing.
By appropriate selection of material for the individual components several advantages are achieved at the same time.
The functions necessary for operation of the engine can be individually assigned for the individual areas of the cylinder block. This results in particular from the requirements which are set in individual areas of the cylinder block. Clearly defined and greatly limited functions correspond to the individual areas. For example the main function of the coolant casing area is.to seal. Further functions are to absorb forces and to prevent the reflection of noise. In contrast the two parts of the bearing only have to fulfill strength and rigidity functions. On the other hand, sealing and the prevention of noise reflection are the main purposes of the oil sump. This example of the decentralisation of functions shows that a function-based material selection is possible and sensible.
In the proposed solution, therefore, the cylinder block 2 is constructed as a light metal casting part, the bearing bed 4 and the bearing support 5 are produced in spheroidal graphite iron, and the casing 6, which at the same time forms a sound proofing is constructed as a plastics part, for example of glass fibre-reinforced polyamide or vinyl ester or epoxide resin. Sheet Moulding Components (SMC) made of unsaturated polyesters based on epoxide, or based on epoxy or epoxide of unsaturated polymers can also be used, and the plastics can be structured or honeycombed. The cylinder linings 3 can be made of gray cast iron.
As a variant, as shown in Fig. 2, a cylinder housing with linings in aluminium casting can also be considered, and the contact surfaces of the linings are treated according to the Rheynoldsch process. The cylinder housing is a high silicon-containing aluminium alloy.
The proposed crankshaft bearing offers various advantages: 1. The selected material, spherical graphite casting, corresponds to the material of the crankshaft. This offers the advantage of the same heat expansion of the crankshaft and the shaft main bearing.
2. The division into two of the bearing into a bearing support and a bearing bed affords the advantage that the two components both connect the crank drive to the clutch housing.
They therefore absorb the supporting forces of the torque of the crankshaft ahd the forces of the motor holding means.
Because of the laterally open crankshaft bearing the oil sump is constructed to be laterally higher than was usual previousiy, so that this new type of casing can at the same time also fulfill the function of preventing the reflection of sound, and makes possible a heat exchange between the coolant and the motor coil.
Although not shown in detail, the bearing bed and the bearing support are reinforced like a frame at the top and at the bottom.
Also, oil supply bores are integrated in the upper part of the bearing bed.
The realisation of the proposed solution pro duces a saving in weight of about 40% with respect to the known unitary gray cast iron block and about 20% with respect to a light metal casting block.
