Description

SPECIFICATION Device for use in applying a surface layer to a wall This invention relates to a device for use in applying a surface layer to a wall. More particularly the invention relates to a device for use in plastering or tiling a wall.
Problems arise with applying a surface layer such as plaster or tiles to a wall when it is necessary to plaster or tile round an external or internal corner. In particular, it is difficult to ensure that the surface layer accurately follows the configuration of the wall in the region of the corner.
Similar problems arise when it is necessary to apply a surface layer over a particular area of a wall, and to leave an adjacent area free of the surface layer.
In both these instances it is necessary to provide means to define the area to be surfaced.
One known way to solve this problem is to provide an elongate member which is placed along the wall and which defines an edge for the surface layer. For example, when it is desired to apply a surface layer over a particular area of the wall the member can be placed along the edge of the area and a surface layer applied to the wall up to that edge. Or when it is desired to apply a surface layer around a corner the member can be placed at the corner and each side of the wall can be surfaced up to the member.
There are drawbacks involved with this arrangement because it is necessary to attach the elongate member to the wall securely before surfacing commences. In addition, it is easy to knock the member out of the correct orientation during surfacing.
Another known solution is to connect to the elongate member a panel having a planar surface. In use the panel and member are placed against the wall and the surface layer is applied over the panel and up to the edge defined by the member. When the surface layer is applied over the panel it is intended to bond to the panel in order to hold the panel and member in a fixed position.
In practise, however, this arrangement has the disadvantage that the surface layer does not bond effectively to the panel and thus the panel and the member tend to slip out of position.
According to the present invention there is provided a device for applying a surface layer to a structure, comprising an elongate member adapted to define an edge for said surface layer, and a panel secured to the member and adapted to engage a structure, said panel having a face over which the surface layer can be applied to bond the surface layer to the face, said face being of non-planar configuration in order to improve the bond between the panel and the surface layer.
The device is especially useful when the structure is a wall.
The surface layer may for example be plaster, or may be tiles which are usually applied to the wall using tiling adhesive.
The bond is most effective when the face is configured so that it defines at least one recess in which the material of the surface layer can be received. Advantageously the or each recess has an opening through which the material of the surface layer can be inserted in the recess, the size of the or each recess in at least one dimension being greater than the size of the opening in the same dimension. It will be appreciated that when the surface layer comprises tiles, it is the tiling adhesive which is received by the recess.
Preferably the or each recess is of dovetailed configuration.
In use, the device is preferably applied to the wall so that the longitudinal axis of the elongate member extends vertically with respect to the wail.
The or each recess is preferably elongate and has a longitudinal axis parallel to the longitudinal axis of the elongate member.
Conveniently the device comprises a plastics material which may be forced by extrusion.
According to a further aspect of the invention there is provided an assembly comprising two devices as described above wherein at least one of said devices is provided with a connecting member to enable it to be removably secured to the other device.
Advantageously the or each connecting member enables the devices to slide relative to one another.
Preferably both devices are provided with the connecting member, said connecting members being configured to co-operate with one another so that each defines a recess into which a formation on the other member may be slid. Each recess is dimensioned so that it exerts a gripping force on each formation, so that a force must be applied to move the devices relative to one another.
This assembly is particularly useful to accommodate movements of the plaster or tiles after the wall has been plastered or tiled, because the two devices are able to move relative to one another.
Reference is now made to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figures 1 to 4 show perspective views of four different embodiments of a device according to the present invention; Figure 5 is a perspective view showing the devices of Figs. 1 to 4 in place on a wall; and Figure 6 is a perspective view of a further embodiment of device according to the invention in place on a wall.
