Abstract

An aircraft seat backrest comprises an inverted U-frame (10) of hollow resin reinforced carbon fibre skin filled with an expanded material core. The frame has a headrest section (11) and depending side arms (12, 13). A diaphragm (15) of synthetic woven material spans between the arms (12, 13). The backrest combines lightness in weight with high structural efficiency. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Backrest for aircraft seat This invention relates to a backrest for an aircraft seat.
More particularly the invention relates to a backrest for an aircraft seat comprising a frame of generally inverted U-shape comprising a headrest portion and depending side arms each consisting of a hollow skin of resin reinforced carbon fibre material filled with a core of expanded material to prevent buckling under load, and a diaphragm moulded in with the frame and spanning between the headrest and side arms.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a front perspective view of a backrest according to the invention.
In the drawing an aircraft seat backrest comprises a generally U-shaped inverted frame 10 having a headrest section 11 that acts as a single torsion box from which depend side arms 12, 13. The side arms are formed slightly more than midway along the length with forward offsets 14 to provide increased knee space when the backrest is assembled in an aircraft seat. The headrest section 11 and side arms 12, 13 are formed of hollow resin reinforced carbon fibre built onto cores of an expanded material such as aluminium honeycomb, Kevlar honeycomb or a structural foam such as an acrylic or polyimide foam.
Between the headrest section 11 and the side arms 12, 13 there is provided a diaphragm 15 of synthetic woven material such as nylon or Kevlar. The diaphragm may be flexible or rigid but preferably comprises a syntactic core material sandwiched between layers of polyamide or polyimide fabric to provide a stiffened but flexible diaphragm. The syntactic core material comprises an epoxy sheet filled with micro-bailoons to provide the basis of the constant thickness sandwich construction with high flexibility and self-adhesive properties. The diaphragm may be attached to the frame after the frame has been assembled and cured, but preferably the diaphragm will be fitted to the frame before curing to give an integral moulded structure.
It has been found that the backrest of the invention combines lightness in weight with high structural efficiency. The backrest may be fitted to a metal aircraft seat as described in Patent Specification No.GB-A-2022403 or it may be fitted to a carbon fibre based aircraft seat as described in our co-pending application No.GB 8331260.
1. A backrest for an aircraft seat comprising a frame of generally inverted U-shape comprising a headrest portion and depending side arms each consisting of a hollow skin of resin reinforced carbon fibre material filled with a core of expanded material to prevent buckling under load, and a diaphragm moulded in with the frame and spanning between the headrest and side arms.
2. A backrest according to claim 1, wherein the headrest portion comprises a single torsion box.
3. A backrest according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the arms are formed with forward offsets starting at least 50% of their length from the headrest portion to increase leg room at close seat pitch.
4. A backrest according to any preceding claim wherein the diaphragm comprises a sheet of syntactic material faced on each of its surfaces with polyamide or polyimide material.
5. A backrest substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
