Description

SPECIFICATION Side plate for a scraper-chain conveyor This invention relates to a side plate for a scraperchain conveyor.
A known side plate is connectible to the vertical web portions of the generally sigma-shaped side wall of a scraper-chain conveyor channel section by securing means which engage in the V-shaped recess of that side wall. The side plate has a noseshaped projection, extending towards the middle of the conveyor, which rests on the upper flange of said side wall.
Such side plates serve to raise the filling crosssection of a scraper-chain conveyor. Their noseshaped projections, which point towards the middle of the conveyor, not only guarantee a secure support of the side plates on the conveyor side walls, but also prevent conveyed material from building up on the flanges of the conveyor side walls. The nose-shaped projection of the known type of side plate is formed by shaping a metal sheet to form an angle plate, the lower leg of which bears on the upper flange of the conveyor section side wall, and the rounded-off upper leg of which extends up to the total height of the side plate. Thus, the nose-shaped projection constitutes the effective part of the side plate, while the other parts of the side plate serve merely for the stiffening and securing of the side plate to the scraperchain conveyor.
Since side plates of this type are used with scraper-chain conveyors of varying dimensions, side plates of different heights are required, consequently, the expense of construction and storage for such a range of side plates is very high.
The aim of the invention is to provide a side plate for a scraper-chain conveyor which avoids the disadvantages of the known type of side plate.
The present invention provides a side plate for a scraper-chain conveyor having a pair of generally sigma-shaped side walls, the side plate being constituted by an upright member and a separate nose-shaped projection, the upright member being connectible to one of the side walls by securing means which engage in the V-shaped recess of that side wall, and the nose-shaped projection pointing towards the middle of the conveyor, wherein the nose-shaped projection is fixed to the upright member in such a position as to rest, in use, on the upper flange of the associated side wall.
Thus, with this type of side plate, it is possible to use the same components for the production of side plates for use with scraper-chain conveyors of varying dimensions. In order to adapt such a side plate to a given conveyor side wall, it is merely necessary to weld the separate nose-shaped projection to the upright member at the appropriate height position.
Advantageously, the upright member is a sheet metal plate. Preferably, the sheet metal plate is formed with angled-over flanges at the top and bottom thereof, said flanges extending substantially at right-angles to the main portion of the upright member and away from the nose-shaped projection.
Conveniently, the nose-shaped projection is constituted by a metallic angle plate, both legs of the angle plate being fixed to the upright member.
Preferably, one leg of the angle plate extends at right-angles to the upright member, and the other leg is directed obliquely upwards therefrom. In this way, the nose-shaped projection prevents build-up of conveyed material on the upper flange of the conveyor side wall, without however involving the disadvantages of the known side plates.
In a preferred embodiment, that side of the upright member remote from the nose-shaped projection is provided with reinforcing plates, the reinforcing plates preferably being welded to the upright member. Advantageously, the upright member and the reinforcing plates are provided with coaxial bores for the passage of securing means for fixing the side plate to said side wall.
Preferably, the side plate further comprises alignment members fixed to that side of the upright member to which the nose-shaped projection is fixed. Advantageously, the alignment members are welded to the upright member.
Thus, it is possible, with relatively low costs, to produce a wide range of side plates for different scraper-chain conveyors. In order to adapt to the different conveyor side walls, it is necessary only to weld the nose-shaped projection, the reinforcing plates and the alignment members to the upright member at the appropriate height positions, and to provide the upright member with the requisite bores, in accordance with the dimensions of the conveyor side wall in each case.
The invention also provides a scraper-chain conveyor channel section having a pair of side walls of generally sigma-shaped profile, wherein at least one of the side walls is provided with a side plate as defined above.
Advantageously, the alignment members of the or each side plate are positioned so as to engage within the V-shaped recess of the associated side wall.
Preferably, the reinforcing plates of the or each side plate are positioned in the region of the securing means for fixing that side plate to the associated side wall, said securing means being positioned in alignment with the V-shaped recess of said side wall.
A side plate constructed in accordance with the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, the single figure of which is a cross-section through the side plate and part of an associated conveyor channel section.
Referring to the drawing, a scraper-chain conveyor is constituted by a plurality of channel sections 1 joined together end-to-end. Each channel section 1 is formed, in known manner, by two generally sigma-shaped side walls 2, between the middle flanges 3 of which a floor plate 4 is welded.
Each side wall 2 includes vertical web sections 6.
A side plate 5 is secured to the web sections 6 of one of the side walls 2. The side plate 5 serves to increase the height of the associated side wall 2, as well as constituting a spill plate holder. The side plate 5 is constituted by an upright sheet metal plate 7 angled off at both the top and bottom, a nose-shaped projection 8, reinforcing plates 9, alignment strips 10, and vertical struts 11. The projection 8 of the side plate 5 is an angled metal member, which is welded to the associated upright plate 7. The projection 8 has a generally horizontal portion 21 and an upwardly-inclined portion 22.
The portion 21 rests on the upper flange 12 of the associated side wall 2. The side plate 5 is fixed to the associated side wall 2 by securing means 13.
This type of side plate 5 is suitable for use with scraper-chain conveyors of any desired conveyor side wall height H. In order to adapt to a given scraper-chain conveyor, the nose-shaped projection 8 is welded, at the appropriate position, to the side of the upright plate 7 facing the scraper-chain conveyor. This provides the height fixing of the side plate 5 in relation to the side wall 2. Besides the height fixing, the nose-shaped projection 8 prevents build up of conveyed material on the upper flange 12 of the side wall 2, by deflecting such material into the upper run of the scraper-chain conveyor. Moreover, the nose-shaped projection 8 effects a stiffening of the entire side plate 5.
In order additionally to stiffen the side plate 5 in the region of the securing means 13, several reinforcing plates 9 are welded to the upright plate 7.
The reinforcing plates 9 are positioned on the side of the upright plate 7 remote from the associated side wall 2, and are spaced along the length thereof. The reinforcing plates 9 are welded to the upright plate 7 at a height which depends upon the height H of the side wall 2. The reinforcing plates 9 and the upright plate 7 have respective coaxial bores 14 and 15 for the passage of stepped-headed bolts 16 which serve as the securing means 13. Depending upon the operational conditions, the bores 14 and 15 can be formed either before or after the welding-on of the reinforcing plates 9. In the case where the side wall 2 of the channel section 1 is to be provided with an additional row of fastening points, the upright plate 7 and the reinforcing plates 9 can be provided with additional bores 17.
The stepped-headed bolts 16 engage, in known manner, behind longitudinally-spaced guard plate holders 19 welded into the V-shaped recess 18 of the side wall 2.
A respective alignment strip 10 is welded, between each pair of adjacent guard plate holders 19, to the side of the upright plate 7 facing the side wall 2. The alignment strips 10 are positioned at a height which depends upon the height H of the side wall 2. The alignment strips 10 fix the side plate 5 accurately in relation to the channel section 1 in the conveying direction. Since, the alignment strips 10 must be adapted to the form of the Vshaped recess 18 of the side wall 2, it is not possible for universally-usable parts to be utilised as alignment strips. Rather, the alignment strips 10 are the only components of the side plate 5 which are produced especially for use with different conveyors. The other parts of the side plate 5, namely the upright plate 7, the reinforcing plates 9 and the nose-shaped projection 8, are the same irrespective of which scraper-chain conveyor the side plate is manufactured for, and are merely welded on in different height positions for adaptation to the conveyor concerned. In this way, the construction expense, the manufacture and the storekeeping for a range of side plates for an entire conveyor programme are considerably reduced, so that overall costs are considerably reduced.
Although the scraper-chain conveyor described above has side plates 5 associated with the side wall 2 of the channel sections 1 at one side only, it will be apparent that side plates could be provided at both sides of the conveyor.
