Abstract
A seal for hermetically sealing containers, of any kind, in particular washing tubs for clothes washing machines, and which can also be used in other types of domestic electrical appliances, is provided in which two ends thereof are respectively provided with at least one male connecting portion (16, 21) and one female connecting portion (19, 23) which can be fitted and connected together, said connecting portions being so shaped as to prevent disengagement of the ends of said seal. The connecting portion may be formed by a projecting head (17) which is preferably of semicylindrical shape and which is connected to the seal by means of a portion (18) which is of smaller thickness than the head (17), and said female connecting portion (19) is formed by an opening (20) of a configuration corresponding to that of said head (17) and said portion (18); alternatively the male connecting portion (21) may be provided with a toothed configuration (22) projecting from the seal and of a tapering shape and said female connecting portion (23) is provided with a corresponding opening (24). <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Seal, in particular for domestic electrical appliances
The invention relates to a seal of simple type which is convenient to use and which can be employed in particular in domestic electrical appliances.
As is known, containers of any type which are made up of individual components that can be fitted together are hermetically sealed by using seals of conventional type which are shaped with the same forms and dimensions as the components which are to be assembled, in such a way that they can be adapted to and fitted on the associated peripheral edges of the components involved.
Such seals are produced by means of drawing or other conventional working processes, generally in the form of continuous strips which are then cut to the desired length.
Subsequently, the flat ends of each seal are brought together and joined to each other by means of glueing.
However, such seals are found to be particularly critical in use by virtue of the fact that they are rigid at the regions in which the associated ends thereof are joined, whereby in those regions they are substantially non-deformable and they do not make it possible to produce entirely satisfactory seals between the various components of the containers involved.
Those defects are particularly accentuated in the case of washing tubs of clothes washing machines which, being subjected to high dynamic forces, would however require the use of seals which are capable of ensuring efficient and uniform sealing all along the peripheral edge thereof.
In accordance with the invention there is provided a seal for hermetically sealing a container, the seal having two ends thereof respectively provided with at least one male connecting portion and one female connecting portion which can be fitted and connected together, said connecting portions being so shaped as to prevent disengagement of the ends of said seal.
As will become apparent from the following description, the illustrated embodiment of the invention provides a seal whose ends can be connected together in a simple fashion without the use of adhesive substances as previously, in order thereby to produce reliable and satisfactory seals in the containers of the kind specified hereinbefore.
The seal can be used for hermetic sealing containers of any kind, in particular washing tubs of washing machines and it can be used in other types of domestic appliance.
The invention will be better appreciated from the following description which is given solely by way of non-limiting example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is an exploded perspective view of a clothes washing machine tub provided witha seal according to the invention, and
Figures 2 and 3 are front views of a portion of seal in accordance with the invention, in two different forms.
Referring to Fig. 1, shown therein is the washing tub 4 of a top-loading washing machine, substantially comprising a cylindrical casing 5 which is arranged to contain a drum 6 of conventional type and which is provided with a top loading opening 7 for introducing and removing the laundry, and further comprising two flanges 8 and 9 of circular shape, for laterally closing the cylindrical casing 5. In particular, the flange 8 is connected to the casing 5 with the interposition of a seal 10 of conventional type, while the flange 9 is welded to the casing 5. The two flanges 8 and 9 are also shaped to support the shaft 11 of the drum 6.
In the embodiment described, the seal 10 is compressed axially by means of a circular ring 12 against the three peripheral bent-over edge portions respectively formed by the casing 5, the flange 8 and a further circular flange 13, the flange 9 and the further flange 13 being provided with a respective semicircular counter-weight 14 and 15 of suitable heavy material such as concrete or the like for the purposes of ballasting the tub 4.
That construction is substantially identical to that described in utility model application No.
34021-B/77 filed on 19th September 1977 by the present applicants.
In accordance with the invention, the two free ends of the seal described above are respectively provided with a male connecting portion and a female connecting portion, which are produced with conventional working processes, the connecting portions being such that they can be perfectly fitted and connected to each other without the use of conventional adhesive substances.
In particular, the connecting portions are of such a configuration as to ensure an effective seal in that region and also to prevent the ends of the seal from becoming disengaged from each other.
For that purpose, Figs. 2 and 3 show two possible embodiments of the connecting portions in question.
It will be seen from Fig. 2 that the male connecting portion 16 is advantageously formed by a projecting head 17 of semi-cylindrical shape, which is connected to the seal by means of a portion 18 which is of smaller thickness than the thickness of the head 17.
Similarly, the female connecting portion 19 is formed by an opening 20 of a configuration corresponding to that of the head 17 and the portion 18 referred to above.
In Fig. 3 however, the male connecting por tion 21 is provided by a tooth configuration 22 projecting from the seal, of a tapering shape, while the female connecting portion 23 is provided with a corresponding opening 24.
It will be appreciated that it is also possible to use those seals in the washing tubs which are assembled in different ways from that described above and which can be used both in clothes washing machines of top loading type and in clothes washing machines of front loading type, without departing from the scope of protection of the present invention.
Equally, the seals may advantageously also be used in other types of domestic electrical appliances such as for example in refrigerating equipment as well as in the baking or roasting compartments of stoves, cookers etc and also in further containers of any kind, shape and size.
The seals in question are of a simple construction and are convenient to use and, without involving the use of adhesive substances for connecting the associated ends thereof, they make it possible to produce effective and uniform sealing effects along the entire peripheral edge of the seals.
