Abstract

An Archimedean screw 1, (2, Fig. 5) has a plurality of cutting elements 7 mounted thereon, the elements 7 being substantially circular and located one after the other in succession on the outer cutting edges of the Archimedean screw, the cutting elements being fixed in such a way that they jut or extend out beyond the edges of the screw. The screw may be used to collect and cut filamentous material, e.g. herbage for use as cattle feed. The cutting elements may be rotated in order that a used-up cutting part thereof may be replaced by an efficient cutting part. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION An Archimedean screw having cutting elements mounted thereon The present invention relates to Archimedean screws having cutting elements mounted thereon, provided particularly for shearing and conveying filamentous materials. It is wellknown that Archimedean screws are used for conveying, canalizing, mincing and collecting especially edible herbage ensiled in the open and then employed for feeding cattle. The endless surfaces of said Archimedean screws develop around shafts according to helicoidal generatrixes. In other cases, however, Archimedean screws having sectors with helicoidal surfaces are used.
The purpose and function of the present invention is to provide cutting elements mounted on said Archimedean screws in order to greatly improve the cutting characteristics thereof and for obtaining a better mincing and collecting of the herbage or similar ensiled filamentous products.
According to the present invention there is provided an Archimedean screw having cutting elements mounted thereon, particularly for shearing and conveying filamentous materials, in which said cutting elements are substantially circular and located one after the other in succession on the outer cutting edges of the Archimedean screw, and said cutting elements being fixed in such way that they jut or extend out beyond the edges of the screw to a certain extent.
Preferably, the Archimedean screw is either an endless screw or a screw with sectors and said cutting elements may be fixed by means of usual bolts.
The present invention will be further illustrated, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a schematic front view of an Archimedean screw with sectors; Figure 2 is a perspective view of the Archimedean screw of Fig. 1; Figure 3 shows a detail of a circular cutting element; Figure 4 is a schematic front view of an endless Archimedean screw; and Figure 5 is a perspective view of the endless Archimedean screw of Fig. 4.
As illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, an Archimedean screw 1 comprises a shaft 3 having a plurality of circular sectors 4 mounted thereon in a helical manner. Empty spaces are provided along the shaft 3 between the sectors 4. Every circular sector 4 is rigidly connected to the shaft 3 by means of a soldering seam 5. Cutting elements 7, which are the object of the present invention, are fixed by usual means, such as bolts 6 or the like, on the edge of every sector showing the largest helicoidal development. Said cutting elements 7, mountedron every sector 4, have a substantially circular shape and are positioned one after the other in succession, and in such way that a part of every cutting element juts out beyond the edge to a certain extent. This particular shape and disposition permits a series of gripping and/or cutting points to be obtained which allow a mincing of herbage or ensiled filamentous products, particularly employed for feeding cattle, more efficiently than the mincing which can be obtained in the known art.
Another advantage consists in the possibility of shifting the used-up cutting part by rotating every single element in order to always have an efficient cutting part.
Said cutting elements can be also applied on an Archimedean screw 2 having an endless screw as illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5.
1. An Archimedean screw having cutting elements mounted thereon particularly for shearing and conveying filamentous materials, in which said cutting elements are substantially circular and located one after the other in succession on the outer cutting edges of the Archimedean screw, and said cutting elements being fixed in such way that they jut or extend out beyond the edges of the screw to a certain extent.
2. An Archimedean screw having cutting elements mounted thereon, as claimed in claim 1, in which the screw is an endless screw or a screw having sectors.
3. An Archimedean screw having cutting elements mounted thereon as claimed in claim 1 or 2, in which the cutting elements are mounted on the screw by means of bolts.
4. An Archimedean screw having cutting elements mounted thereon, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
