Description
SPECIFICATION
Display apparatus for a vehicle
This invention relates to display apparatus for a vehicle. More especially, this invention relates to apparatus for displaying to an occupant of a vehicle information required by that occupant, for example a required vehicle route from one place to another, or an address of a place.
Vehicle drivers travelling in unfamiliar districts often require a map to determine their route and position. The maps are not always convenient to unfold in the vehicle and, moreover, they soon get torn throuqh wear.
Vehicle drivers also have a need to be in contact with person remote from the vehicle.
Radio vehicle telephones are known but often the vehicle driver has difficulty in remembering what he has been told on the telephone.
For example, whilst the driver in driving the vehicle, he cannot easily write down information that he receives, and he may find it difficult to remember what he has been told since he is concentrating on driving.
It is an aim of the present invention to provide vehicle display apparatus that obviates or reduces the above problems.
Accordingly, this invention provides display apparatus for a vehicle, which display apparatus comprises a display panel, computer means, and d.c. power input means, the display apparatus being such that information required by an occupant of the vehicle can be displayed on the display panel.
In a first embodiment of the invention, the display apparatus is used to display a required vehicle route from one place to another. The display can give road names in the order in which they have to be travelled, and the display can also give the location of the roads relative to other roads.
In the first embodiment of the invention, the display apparatus will usually include a memory device for storing data.
In the first embodiment of the invention, the display apparatus may also include a radio transceiver. Thus an occupant of the vehicle such as the driver may converse with persons remote from the vehicle.
In a second embodiment of the invention, the display apparatus is used to display data such for example as an address of a place.
In the second embodiment of the invention, the display apparatus will usually include a modulator/ demodulator unit, and a radio transceiver. The modulator/demodulator unit may be used to code and decode messages received and transmitted via the radio transceiver.
In a third embodiment of the invention, the display apparatus is used to display both a required vehicle route from one place to another and data such for example as an address of a place.
In the third embodiment of the invention, the display apparatus will usually include a memory device for storing data, a modulator/demodulator unit, and a radio transceiver.
In a fourth embodiment of the invention, the display apparatus is a modified form of the second embodiment of the invention and it includes the modulator/demodulator unit, and, in place of the radio transceiver, a telephone.
In a fifth embodiment of the invention, the display apparatus is again a modified form of the second embodiment of the invention and it includes the modulator/ demodulator unit, the telephone, and one or more earphones.
The display panel is preferably a liquid crystal display panel. The display panel may be flat or curved.
The display apparatus of the invention may include a power source. The power source may be any type of d.c. battery. Usually the battery will be a 1 2 volt battery.
The invention also provides a vehicle when provided with the display apparatus.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows first display apparatus, the display apparatus being suitable for displaying a required vehicle route from one place to another;
Figure 2 shows second display apparatus which is a modification of the display apparatus shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 shows third display apparatus, the display apparatus being suitable for displaying data such as the address of a place;
Figure 4 shows fourth display apparatus which is a combination of the display apparatus shown in Figures 1 and 3;
Figure 5 shows fifth display apparatus which is a modification of the apparatus shown in Figure 3; and
Figure 6 shows sixth display apparatus which is a modification of the apparatus shown in Figure 3.
Referring to Figure 1, there is shown display apparatus 2 for a vehicle (not shown).
The display apparatus 2 comprises a display panel in the form of a television screen 4, computer means in the form of a microprocessor unit 6, a battery 8, and a memory 10.
The battery 8 supplies d.c. power to the microprocessor unit 6 and the memory 10 via d.c. power input terminals on the microprocessor unit 6 and the memory 10, as shown schematically in Figure 1.
In use, a driver of a vehicle wishing to go from one place to another needs only to key both of these places into the display apparatus 2 via a keyboard (not shown). The screen 4 will then display the required road names in the order that they have to be travelled. The road names will be stored in the memory 10 and they will be output from the memory 10 in the correct sequence consequent upon appropriate command signals from the microprocessor unit 6. The memory 10 may be a cassette recorder, a disc drive device, a hard disc or a bubble memory device.
It is envisaged that various memory maps can be sold. For example, the memory maps may contain in detail road names of local areas or in less detail road names of larger areas. All a vehicle driver would have to do would be to purchase an appropriate memory map and insert it into the display apparatus 2.
The microprocessor unit 6 will be provided with an appropriate programme to process the data on the memory map and to output from the memory 10 the desired list of road names for display on the screen 4.
Referring now to Figure 2, there is shown the display apparatus of Figure 1 with the addition of a radio transceiver 1 2. The radio transceiver 12 enables the driver or another occupant of the vehicle to converse with persons remote from the vehicle. Thus, the driver of a van or a minicab driver for example can always be in contact with his base for up-todate instructions.
Referring now to Figure 3, there is shown display apparatus 14 for displaying data such for example as an address of a place. The display apparatus 14 includes the screen 4, the mocroprocessor unit 6 and the battery 8 of Figure 1. In addition, it includes a modulator/ demodulator unit 1 6 and a radio transceiver 1 8. The modulator/demodulator unit 16 can be used to code and decode messages received and transmitted via the radio transceiver 18.
In use of the display apparatus 14, a driver of the vehicle can be given information such as an address that he has to retain. This information will be heard by the driver via the radio transceiver 1 8 but it will also be shown and retained as desired on the screen 4. The screen 4 can be cleared by the driver as required.
Referring now to Figure 4, there is shown display apparatus 20 which is a combination of the display apparatus 2 of Figure 1 and the display apparatus 14 of Figure 3. It will thus be appreciated that the apparatus 20 can be used to display both a required vehicle route from one place to another and data such for example as an address of a place.
Referring now to Figure 5, the display apparatus 22 therein shown is a modification of the display apparatus 14 as shown in
Figure 3. More specifically, the radio transceiver of Figure 3 has been replaced by a telephone 24. Telephone messages can thus be received, decoded, and displayed on the screen 4. Telephone picture messages can also be received and displayed on the screen 4.
Referring now to Figure 6, there is shown display apparatus 26 which is also a modification of the display apparatus 14 shown in
Figure 3. In Figure 6, all the parts in Figure 5 are present, plus three earphones 28. The earphones 28 enable several persons to use the same telephone line simultaneously. The parts 6, 16, 24 may be produced as one unit.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiments of the invention described above have been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, the screen 4 could be a liquid crystal display or a light emitting diode display. Also, the screen 4 could display an entire map with the indicated route instead of just the road names. Further, the screen 4 could display the road names of an alternative route, or an entire map with an alternative route, in the event that the first displayed route should be unavailable, for example due to heavy traffic or an accident.
