Abstract
The device 10, in the form of an elongate bar, can be placed on rim 19 of paint tin 20 by means of a slot in each of its respective ends 15, 16 so that it extends chordwise or diametrically of the rim 19. The elongate bar may be of plastics or metal and is preferably of truncated pyramid shape in cross section having two downwardly sloping surfaces 11, 12, one of which serves as a paint brush paint loading surface to ensure even application of paint to a brush wiped thereon by the removal of excess paint from the brush, which excess drips back into the tin 20. Beads 24 extending around the side and top surfaces of the bar at the ends 15, 16 prevent the lateral movement of paint onto the rim 19. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Paint brush paint loading device
This invention relates to paint brush paint loading devices, that is to say a device for use with a paint container such as a paint tin, which device facilitates even loading or application of paint onto the brush from the paint container into which the brush is dipped.
In the use of paint brushes and paint tins, it has hitherto been common practice after dipping the bristles of the brush into the paint in the paint tin to ensure even loading of the bristles of the brush with paint by wiping the paint coated bristles against the inside edge of the rim of the tin. This latter practice ensures the removal of excess paint from the brush.
However, the practice has two main disadvantages. Firstly, paint containers such as paint tins are normally cylindrical which means that the inside edge of the rim against which the paint coated bristles of the brush are wiped is curved. Consequently, the paint coated bristles have to conform closely to the curvature of the rim when they are being wiped there against otherwise excess paint remains on the bristles and therefore the bristles of the brush are not evenly loaded. Conformity is not always guaranteed, particularly if the paint brush has a large width compared with the diameter of the container.
Secondly, when wiping the bristles against the inside edge of the rim, the excess paint removed from the bristles tends to run over the rim and also down the outside surface of the container. This is not only messy and wasteful of paint, but also when the wasted paint dries on the rim it can prove very difficult to put the container lid back firmly onto the rim.
An object of the present invention is to provide a paint brush loading device for a paint container by means of the use of which the aforesaid disadvantages are obviated.
With this object in view the present invention provides a paint brush paint loading device for paint containers, said device comprising at least one paint loading surface against which the brush's paint coated bristles can be wiped, for even loading of the paint on and removal of excess paint from said bristles, and said device being adapted to engage the container's rim with the paint loading surface extending chordwise or diametrically of the rim and orientated with respect to the rim such that said excess paint is directed by said surface back into the container, means being provided on the paint loading surface to prevent excess paint flowing laterally along said surface and onto the rim of the container.
Advantageously, the device is in the form of an elongate bar, substantially truncated pyramid shape in cross-section. This cross-sectional shape provides a device which has two downwardly sloping and gradually diverging flat outer surfaces with laterally extending flat top and bottom surfaces, the bottom surface being of greater width than the top surface.
Advantageously, when the elongate bar is engaged with the rim so that it extends chordwise of the rim, the paint loading surface is provided by that downwardly sloping surface which is remote from that portion of the circumference of the rim which forms an arc with the elongate bar. In the case where the elongate bar extends diametrically of the rim, either or both said sloping surface may provide the paint loading surface.
Preferably, the elongate bar is adapted for engagement with the rim of the container by its ends each having substantially C-shaped slots. Where the device is intended for utilisation with cylindri cal shaped containers for paint, such as a paint tin, its end surfaces and each slot's base surface are curved so as to complement the curvature of the rim for a secure fit thereon.
The means on the paint loading surface for preventing lateral flow of excess paint therealong and onto the rim is in the form of a pair of beads, one adjacent each C-shaped slot and extending in a continuous manner from the bottom of one sloping surface vertically upwards, across the top surface and vertically down the other sloping surface.
The invention will be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a preferred embodiment of the paint brush paint loading device of the invention;
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the device of Fig.
1; and
Figure 3 illustrates the positioning of the device of Figs. 1 and 2 on a paint container.
Referring firstly to Figs 1 and 2, the preferred paint brush paint loading device 10 is in the form of an elongate bar, for example of rigid plastics or metal, which is substantially truncated pyramid shape in cross-section. This cross-sectional shape provides a device which has two downwardly sloping and gradually diverging flat outer surfaces 11 and 12 (Fig. 3) with laterally extending flat top and bottom surfaces 13 and 14 respectively. The bottom surface 14 is of greater width than the top surface 13.
The bar's end portions 15 and 16 are thicker than the remainder of the bar therebetween and have therein respective C-shaped slots 17 and 18. As can be more clearly seen from Fig. 3, the slots 17, 18 adapt the bar for engagement with rim 19 of a paint container, which in this example is a cylindrical paint tin 20. As the rim 19 is curved, the bar's respective end faces 21 and 22 and the respective base surface 23 of the slots 17, 18 are also curved so as to complement the curvature of the rim 19 for a secure fit thereon.
It will be seen from Fig. 3 that the elongate bar is intended in this example to extend chordwise with respect to the rim 19 of the paint tin 20. In this respect the sloping surface 12 provides a paint loading surface against which paint coated bristles of a paint brush (not shown) can be wiped. The surface 12 is chosen because it is remote from rim portion 19a of the rim 19. The surface 12 provides a flat surface against which the bristles can be wiped, thus always ensuring even loading of the bristles with paint. Due to the orientation of the bar on the rim 19, with the surface 12 sloping downwards towards the tin's interior, any excess paint wiped from the bristles will tend to drip back into the tin 20. Indeed, not only will paint drip or run down the surface 12 but also the surface 11.
In order to prevent excess paint from the bristles of the brush getting onto the rim 19 by movement laterally along the surfaces 11 and 12, means to prevent this is provided in the form of a pair of triangular cross-section beads 24 which are disposed each adjacent a respective end 21 or 22 of the bar.
Each bead 24 extends a continuous manner from the bottom of sloping surface 11 upwardly to and across the top surface 13 and down the other sloping surface 12.
The invention is not confined to the precise details of the foregoing and variations can be made thereto within the scope of the invention Thus, for example, the length of the elongate bar can be such that said bar can be placed on the rim to extend diametrically across the opening of the container. In this respect both sloping surfaces can be used as paint loading surfaces.
