Abstract

A reversing aid for assisting the driver of a vehicle in reversing up to a predetermined position. A device is mounted adjacent the said position for measuring the distance between the position and a vehicle approaching it, and indicator lights are mounted adjacent the position for signalling to the driver the results of the measurement, whereby the driver can stop his vehicle when it reaches the said position.

Description

SPECIFICATION Vehicle reversing aid The present invention relates to a vehicle reversing aid.
It is very difficult for the driver of a large vehicle such as an articulated lorry to accurately reverse his vehicle up to a loading/unloading bay. With this problem in mind, devices have been developed which are mounted on the vehicle and give an output representative of the distance between the back of a vehicle and an obstacle towards which the vehicle is being reversed. Generally such devices comprise an ultrasonic transducer located at the back of the vehicle and an indicator unit located in the drivers cab. Ultrasonic signals are transmitted from the transducer and reflected back to it from any obstacle in front of it. The time taken for the signal to travel to and from the obstacle is measured and the transducer/obstacle distance is calculated as a function of this time.A measure of the calculated distance is displayed or otherwise indicated to the driver by the indicator unit in the cab.
The known devices work well but are not fitted to all vehicles. Thus the operator of for example, a warehouse, must assume that at least some of the vehicles arriving at his loading bay will not be equipped with such devices. This means that staff have to be employed to assist drivers in reversing if damage to vehicles and the loading bay is to be avoided.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a reversing aid which does not require fitting to vehicles.
According to the present invention, there is provided a reversing aid for assisting the driver of a vehicle in reversing up to a predetermined position, comprising means mounted adjacent the said position for measuring the distance between the said position and a vehicle approaching it, and means mounted adjacent the said position for sig nalling to the driver the results of the measure ment, whereby the driver can stop his vehicle when it reaches the said position.
Preferably the distance is measured by an ultrasonic system similar to that used on vehicle mounted reversing aids as described above. The signalling means may be similar to traffic lights, showing green when the vehicle is more than a predetermined distance frorn the desired end position, flashing red when the vehicle is less than the predetermined distance from the end position, and steady red when the vehicle is at the end position.
The lights are mounted to one side of the position in which a vehicle is to be placed so that they can be easily watched by the vehicle driver.
Thus the operator of a loading bay can provide a reserving aid which may be used by all vehicles visiting his premises and therefore staff are not re quired simply to assist the vehicle drivers. The reversing aid transducer can also be easily protected from the weather and dirt which is not the case with vehicle mounted systems.
1. A reversing aid for assisting the driver of a vehicle in reversing up to a predetermined position, comprising means mounted adjacent the said position for measuring the distance between the said position and a vehicle approaching it, and means mounted adjacent the said position for signalling to the driver the results of the measurement, whereby the driver can stop his vehicle when it reaches the said position.
2. A reversing aid according to claim 1, wherein the distance measuring means comprises an ultrasonic system.
3. A reversing aid according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the signalling means comprises a green light which is illuminated when the vehicle is more than a predetermined distance from the desired end position, and a red light which is illuminated periodically when the vehicle is less than the predetermined distance from the end position and which is illuminated continuously when the vehicle is at the end position.
4. A reversing aid according to claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the lights are mounted to one side of the position in which a vehicle is to be placed.
