Abstract
This invention relates to a multiple gear system for bicycles. This system combines three sets of gears. The first set of gears is a planetary gear-box on the rear wheel hub axle. This is driven by a splined-threaded adaptor, on which is mounted the second set of gears of the Derailleur type, incorporating a multiple chain sprocket cluster fitted externally on the rear wheel axle. These sprockets are engaged directly by the drive chain - which engages directly with the third set of gears, a multiple chain-wheel cluster fitted to the pedal crank. The planetary hub has five ratios, there are five sprockets in the sprocket cluster on the rear axle and four sprockets fitted to the pedal crank, giving 100 ratios.
Description
SPECIFICATION
A 100 speed drive system for bicycles
Any one of the four chain-wheels which are mounted on the pedal crank assembly (see drawing number 2/2), can be selected independently by a chain shift mechanism, to drive via a chain onto a five sprocket Derailleur chain block assembly on the rear wheel.
This chain block is mounted on a specially threaded adaptor (see drawing number 1/2).
This adaptor provides the drive input to the five speed "Sturmey Archer" (RTM) type of geared driving hub of the rear wheel of the bicycle.
As any one of the five sprockets of the
Derailleur unit can be selected independently, and any one of the five gear ratios of the geared hub can also be selected independently, then the number of different gear/ sprocket/chain-wheel combinations is 4 X 5 X 5 giving a total of 100 different combinations i.e. a "100 speed system".
1. I claim that a 100 speed drive system for a bicycle is a gear/sprocket/chain-wheel system giving 100 different drive combinations.
