Abstract

A radio signal transmission and reception system comprises radio signal transmission apparatus (4) permanently associated with a tunnel (3), and an aerial (5) arranged within the tunnel (3), the arrangement being such that in use the transmission apparatus (4) supplies to the aerial (5) low power signals which are capable of reception by radio receivers (2) within the tunnel (3) but which do not cause any unacceptable interference with radio signal transmission and reception outside the tunnel (3). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Radio signal transmission and reception system This invention relates to a radio signal transmission and reception system.
When an automobile enters a tunnel of any appreciable length any radio receiver in the automobile is generally unable to continue to receive, at least in an intelligible manner, radio signals which can be received outside the tunnel and which are being transmitted from a remote transmitting station, for example generally available radio signals from BBC or other transmitters According to this invention a radio signal transmission and reception system comprises radio signal transmission apparatus permanently associated with a tunnel, and an aerial arranged within the tunnel, the arrangement being such that in use the transmission apparatus supplies to the aerial low power signals which are capable of reception by radio signal receivers within the tunnel but which do not cause any unacceptable interference with radio signal transmission and reception outside the tunnel.
Thus, with the system of this invention radio signal receivers entering a tunnel, for example receivers in automobiled, can continue to function.
The transmission apparatus can simply repeat signals available outside the tunnel such that reception by a receiver entering the tunnel will not be interrupted while the receiver passes through the tunnel.
Otherwise the transmission apparatus can supply original signals, preferably on a wavelength or wavelengths in use for transmission and reception outside the tunnel, such that while in the tunnel a receiver will receive original signals temporarily replacing signals being received outside the tunnel.
Such original signals can convey advertisements.
The accompanying drawing diagrammatically illustrates a system according to this invention.
The drawing shows an automobile 1 having a radio signal receiver with an aerial 2 therein; passing through a tunnel 3.
A radio signal transmission apparatus 4 is mounted adjacent one end of the tunnel 3 and feeds an aerial 5 which extends substantially the length of the tunnel 3.
The apparatus 4 feeds low power radio signals to the aerial 5, which signals are received by the receiver in the automobile 1 and replace any signals being received by the receiver before the automobile entered the tunnel 3.
The signals from the apparatus 4, and the aerial 5, are such that unacceptable interferdnce with radio signal transmission and reception outside the tunnel 3 is substantially avoided.
1. A radio signal transmission and reception system comprising radio signal transmission apparatus permanently associated with a tunnel, and an aerial arranged within the tunnel, the arrangement being such that in use the transmission apparatus supplies to the aerial low power signals which are capable of reception by radio signal receivers within the tunnel but which do not cause any unacceptable interference with radio signal transmission and reception outside the tunnel.
2. A system as claimed in Claim 1, in which the transmission apparatus repeats signals available outside the tunnel.
3. A system as claimed in Claim 1, in which the transmission apparatus supplies original signals.
4. A system as claimed in Claim 3, in which the original signals are on a wavelength or wavelengths in use for transmission and reception outside the tunnel.
5. A system as claimed in Claim 3 or Claim 4, in which the original signals convey advertisements.
6. A radio signal transmission and reception system substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the drawing.
7. A system as claimed in any preceding claim, including a radio signal receiver mounted in an automobile and tuned to receive signals transmitted by the transmission apparatus.
