Abstract

215,746. National Cash Register Co., (Assignees of Shipley, B. M.). May 7, 1923, [Convention date]. Cash registers with several item-valve totalizers; printing totals and sub-totals. - Relat.es to means for controlling the totalizers or total and sub-total taking operations and consists in the provision of a plurality of total-taking control keys and mechanism associated therewith for moving the totalizer control plate as an incident of the operation of the machine. The total taking control keys are arranged in a bank in pairs, each pair corresponding to a bank of the usual control keys, namely, clerks, department and transaction. Means are also provided for preventing the depression of a key in any of the control banks except in that bank corresponding to the total taking key depressed and for preventing the release of the machine if an amount key and total taking key are depressed at the same time. The keyboard comprises a plurality of banks of amount keys 25, three banks 26 of control keys for the department, transaction and clerks respectively and a bank of total taking control keys 27, 28 for sub-totals and totals respectively. The amount keys and control keys co-operate with the usual form of detent members, locking plates and differential mechanism under the control of the release shaft 97 and main shaft 45. In total and sub-total taking operations the selecting and engaging of the totalizers 78 with their actuating segments 52 are effected under the control of the usual control plate 86. The keys 27, 28, which are slidably mounted in a frame 90, each carry a pin 91, Fig. 2, adapted to co-operate with a differentially slotted detent plate 93 pivotally supported on arms 94, 95. The arm 95 has three notches with which is adapted to engage a spring pressed pawl 96 loose on the release shaft 97 so as to hold the depressed key in the lowered position. Co-operating with this bank of keys is a differential mechanism comprising a differentially movable member 100, latch 102, and driving segment 103. A bell crank lever 108 carried by the differential member is adapted to engage, the end of the depressed key to break the latch. The segment is rocked by means of cams on the drive shaft 45, a Y- shaped lever 106 and link 107. Pivoted to the differential member 100 is a beam 109 which cooperates with a roller 110 on the lever 106 and transmits the differential movement to a link 111 that is pivoted to a toothed segment 112 secured to a sleeve 114 to which is also attached an arm 115 connected by a link 116 to the control plate 86. In adding operations the plate is automatically moved to the adding position by means of a pawl 120 pivoted to the notched plate 57 and normally in the path of the bell crank 108. The pawl 120 has a bifurcated end engaging a pin 129 on a detent plate 123 the movement of which on the depression of any one of the total-taking control keys causes the pawl 120 to move to its inoperative position. The detent plate 123 is held in its raised position by a pin 127 on the end of a spring-controlled arm 126 engaging the lower supporting arm of the detent plate. Keyboard interlocks.-To lock the control keys in those banks not corresponding to the total taking key depressed the detent plate 93 carries a link 135 which is pivoted to a yoke member 136 having upwardly extending portions 137 adjacent each of the control banks and which have differentially positioned notches to co-operate with the depending arms 142 of the detents of the control banks. The shaft 138 which pivotally supports the yoke member 136 is connected to mechanism of known type for permitting two complete revolutions of the driving shaft 45 in total and sub-total operations. The shaft 138 is rocked, for this purpose, by means of an arm 150 engaging a pin on a lever 152 the rearward extension of which carries a link 154 pivoted to a bell crank lever 155 that is pivoted at its lower end to a spring-controlled lever 157 loose on a rod 158. The lever 157 is rocked when a total-taking control key is depressed by reason of the disengagement of a pin 167 from the end of a member 166 that is pivoted at its lower end to the lever 157; the pin 167 is mounted on an arm 168 of a sleeve 169 which is provided with a second arm 172 engaging a pin on the arm 124 of the detent plate 123. The spring controlling the lever 157 is also connected to a bell crank lever 162 loose on the rod 158 and the levers 157, 162 are provided with rollers engaging cams on the shaft 45 for the purpose of limiting the rocking movement of the levers and for effecting the return movement of the shaft 138, a spring-pressed pawl 185 being provided to engage the member 166 and hold it in its lowered position until the end of the second cycle when the stud 167 again engages the member 166. To ensure the movement of the lever 152 the lever 162 is provided with an extension 181 engaging the pivot point of the bell crank 155 so as to move it to the left Fig. 2 and thus prevent the toggle, formed by the lever 155 and link 154, straightening. To prevent release of the machine if an amount key and total-taking control key are depressed at the same time, the release shaft 97 which is under spring tension has secured thereto an arm 190 having a pin 191 engaging the slotted end of a lever 192 loose on a shaft 170 and provided at its other end with a projection 198 adapted to engage the upper end of an arm 195 pivoted to the lever 152 when the arm is rocked by the depression of a total-taking control key through a pin 197 carried by the arm 168 engaging a slot in the arm 195. If at the same time an amount key is depressed the corresponding detent plate 32 positions a tail lever 76 carried thereby beneath a rod 193 secured by arms to the shaft 138 to prevent its movement and thereby the lowering of the arm 195. If a total-taking control key is first depressed, depression of an amount key is prevented by rocking the rod 193 to a position in front of the tail lever 76. Near the end of the operation the total taking control key is released by means of a projection on the arm 190 engaging a pin 200 on the detent-holding pawl 96.
