Description

SPECIFICATION A frame for a door or partition The present invention relates to frames for use in the construction of non-solid doors or partitions, i.e. doors or partitions whose two principal side surfaces are formed by one or more planar panel members attached by some means to a base frame. In contrast, a "solid" door would be one formed essentially from, for example, a solid, unitary block of wood, metal or other material and which does not therefore need a separate frame as such.
Non-solid doors are known in which two hardboard or wooden boards are attached, by means of glue, nails or the like, to two sides respectively of a generally rectangular, wooden frame. Non-solid doors are also known in which panes of glass are fixed into a generally wooden frame by means such as clips, screws, nails, putty or the like.
A problem in practice with these known constructions is that different types of frame have to be provided for each different type of door panel.
For example, a frame suitable for carrying wooden or hardboard panels would not normally be suitable for carrying glass or mirror panels. It is an object of the present invention to provide a frame for doors, partitions or the like, which is able to accommodate a wide variety of panel members, such as wood or hardboard, mirrors, glass or the like.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a frame for forming a door or partition, the frame comprising an outer frame portion formed from a plurality of outer frame members which are interconnected at their ends by coupling members, the outer frame members carrying respective U-shaped channels which together form a substantially continuous slot around the inner periphery of said outer frame portion, each channel receiving an elongate member having therein at least one longitudinally extending groove, the arrangement being such that the latter grooves operate together to form a seat for receiving a planar panel member to thereby attach same to the frame.
Preferably, the outer frame members are made of hollow box section, the coupling members being inserted into said box-sections for interconnecting these frame members.
The coupling members are normally L-shaped, with the two arms of the L being received in the hollow box sections at the abutting ends of two of said outer frame members.
The elongate grooved members are prferably made of a plastics member such as P.V.C. This provides a soft, resilient mounting for the panel member, which might be of plain glass, mirrored glass or some form of board.
The grooved members may have a single groove for receiving a single panel member or may have two such grooves for receiving two panel members. In the latter case, one panel might be, for example, of glass or a mirror whereas the other panel might be of board material. Any combination can be chosen as desired.
The present invention will now be described further hereinafter, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of an outer frame section of one embodiment of a frame in accordance with the present invention; Figures 2a to 2d show various embodiments of inner grooved frame members which fit into the outer frame sections of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a perspective view of part of a frame, constructed in accordance with the present invention, having an inner grooved member as shown in Figure 2a; Figure 4 is a sectional view of a corner section, of a frame of the present invention, into which is introduced an L-shaped insert whose corner carries a wheel for travelling along a guide rail; Figure 5 is an end view of the corner section of Figure 4;; Figure 6 is a perspective view of one embodiment of an L-shaped insert and wheel arrangement suitable for use with the corner section of Figure 4; Figure 7 is a perspective view of an L-shaped insert which carries means adapted to be slidably received in a top guide rail; and Figure 8 is a top plan view of the L-shaped insert of Figure 6.
The outer frame section 10 of Figure 1 is formed from an elongate metal member, preferably of mild steel. As indicated in the sectional view of Figure 1, the member 10 comprises a rectangular box section 12 having a uniform U-shaped channel section 14 formed along one of its sides. As explained further below, four lengths of outer frame member 10 are connected together by means of generally L-shaped inserts 16 (Figure 4) to form a rectangular structure, with the U-shaped channels 14 on all four members 10 facing inwards to define a continuous slot around the inner periphery of this rectangular structure.
Each of the U-shaped channels 14 in each of the four outer frame members 10 receives a respective inner frame member 18, a number of possible examples of which are shown in Figures 2a to 2d.
The inner frame members 18 are grooved to receive one or more panel members (not shown) which can be of wood, hardboard, glass, mirror etc. as desired.
Figure 2a shows an inner frame member 18 having two equal grooves 20 disposed uniformly on either side respectively at its longitudinal centre line. These grooves 20 could receive, for example, two hardboard panels, or one hardboard panel and one mirror panel, as desired.
Figure 2b shows an inner frame member 18 having a single, centrally located, narrow groove 20 for receiving a single panel of a desired material.
Figure 2c shows an inner frame member 18 having a single, eccentrically located, narrow groove 20 for receiving a single panel of a desired material.
Figure 2d shows an inner frame member 18 having a single, wider groove 20 for receiving a single, thicker panel of a desired material. The width of the groove or grooves 20 can thus be chosen to suit whatever panel material is to be used, be it wood, mirror or glass etc.
Figure 3 shows the grooved, inner frame member 18 of Figure 2a inserted into the outer frame section 10. Mirror panels 22 are inserted into grooves 20a, 20b. This arrangement would thus provide a door or partition having mirror surfaces on both of its sides. Alternatively, one of the mirrors might be replaced by a board of wood or hardboard, for example, to form a door or partition having only one side mirrored and one side not. In another alternative, both panels 22 might be boards of wood or hardboard. In fact, any combination of board, mirrors or glass may be used in the grooves as desired.
As described above, a complete frame of, say rectangular shape is constructed from four elongate outer frame members 10 interconnected at their ends by means of L-shaped inserts 16 such as shown in Figure 6. One arm 24 of each insert 16 has recesses 26 on two opposite faces at the junction where the arm 24 joins the other arm 27. This is to allow for the difference in width between the box-section 12 and the U-shaped channel 14 of the outer frame section 10 when L-shaped insert 16 is fitted therein. One corner section, constructed as desired above, is shown in Figure 4, with an shaped insert 16 fitted into the box-sections 12 of two outer frame sections 10.
In the embodiment of Figure 4, the insert 16 carries a wheel 28 at the bottom end of arm 17 which protrudes slightly therefrom and which has an annular recess 30 so that the wheel may rest on a guide rail 32. This is particularly useful when the present invention is applied to a sliding door.
Figure 6 shows a typical mounting means 34 by which the wheel 28 is fixed into arm 27 of insert 16. A substantially rectangular wheel assembly body 36 has a height adjusting screw 38 fixed into one end thereof, which screw 38 is able to be screwed into or out of wheel assembly body 36 for adjusting the overall length of mounting means.
The other end of wheel assembly body 36 has two extended arms 40, 42. Each arm 40, 42 has a hole 44 therein, which holes define an axis about which wheel 28 is mounted by means of an axle pin 46 and a roller bearing 48. When inserted into arm 27, the head of screw 38 rests against a surface 49 located inside arm 27. A suitable upper guide means 50 for insertion into the top end of arm 27 of an insert 16 at the upper end of the frame, is shown in Figure 7. Upper guide means 50 travels along a top guide rail (not shown) for permitting motion of the sliding door.
A preferred means of forming the outer frame members 10 is illustrated in Figure 1 wherein the outer frame member 10 comprises a basically Ushaped member 52 whose substantially parallel sides 54, 56 are arranged such that they can accommodate a smaller U-shaped member 58. For this purpose, inward protrusions 60, 62 are provided in sides 54, 56 respectively, which act as lands upon which the base of the U-shaped member 58 rests. Free ends 64, 66 of sides 54, 56, respectively, are bent over in a generally U-shaped manner in order to provide a snug and secured fit for sides 68, 70 of U-shaped member 58, as shown in Figure 1. The open end 14 of outer frame member 10 is then defined by the free ends 64, 66 and the base 72 of U-shaped member 58. U-shaped member 52 and the base 72 at U-shaped member 58 then define the substantially rectangular-sectioned space (box) 12 which runs the whole length of the outer frame member 10.
The inner frame members 18 are preferably formed of a sutiable plastics material, such as P.V.C. However, the material of the frame members 18 is not critical. The outer frame members 10 are preferably made of mild steel strip. However, other materials such as extruded aluminum or suitable plastics materials could conceivably be used.
The door formed as described above can be adapted for use as a sliding or hinged door or as a fixed or movable partition, as desired.
