Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvements in and relating to books
This invention relates to books.
The present invention provides a book comprising one or more printed pages bound between covers, wherein one or more sheets having means for retaining photographs or similar items are provided as a page or pages of the book.
The pages of the book may comprise one or more printed sheets and one or more sheets having means for retaining photographs or similar items.
Preferably, each of the one or more sheets having means for retaining photographs or similar items has means for retaining photographs or similar items on both of its faces. The printed sheets and sheets having means for retaining photographs or similar items may be arranged alternately.
The pages of the book may comprise one or more sheets printed on one face and having means for retaining photographs or similar items on the other face.
The pages of the book may comprise one or more printed sheets and one or more sheets printed on one face and having means for retaining photographs or similar items on the other face.
The pages of the book may comprise one or more sheets printed on one face and having means for retaining photographs or similar items on the other face, and one or more sheets having means for retaining photographs or similar items on both faces of the sheet.
The pages of the book may comprise one or more printed sheets, one or more sheets printed on one face and having means for retaining photographs or similar items on the other face, and one or more sheets having means for retaining photographs or similar items on both faces.
Advantageously, the means for retaining photographs comprises a retentive coating on the associated sheet.
Advantageously, an overlay of transparent plastics film is provided in association with the retentive coating.
The invention also provides a printed page or group of pages for a book as defined above, the printed page or group of pages having means for retaining photographs or similar items.
Advantageously, the printed page or group of pages are in loose-leaf form for binding in a ring-binder.
The term "printed sheet" is used throughout the specification to mean any printed sheet irrespective of the quantity of printed matter on the sheet.
Two forms of book constructed in accordance with the invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view of a first book according to the invention; and
Figure2 is a diagrammatic cross-section of a sheet from a second book according to the invention.
Referring to Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings, the first form of book, is indicated generally by the reference numeral 1 and is in the form of an album in which photographs may readily be mounted and which includes printed text. The book 1 consists of printed sheets 2 interleaved with photograph-mounting sheets 3 bound between covers 4. Each photograph-mounting sheet 3 consists of a double sheet of card 5 having a retentive coating 5a in the form of a pressure-sensitive adhesive on each of its faces. Each double sheet of card 5 consists of a single sheet of card which has been folded in two, the fold-line being parallel to and remote from the spine of the book, and the free edges of the folded sheet lying adjacent to the spine.
The retentive coating 5a is a pressure-sensitive adhesive such as plasticised latex or a resin compound applied in parallel lines to the outer faces of the double sheet of card 5. Thus raised patterns of pressure-sensitive adhesive are formed and they may cover the faces of the sheet either wholly or selectively. The sheet of transparent plastics film 6 is folded about the double sheet of card 5 so as to overlie both faces of the double sheet with the free ends of the film facing the spine of the book. The transparent plastics film 6 is made of, for example, polyvinyl chloride or acetate material or, for archival use, polypropylene or polystyrene and is preferably treated with a silicone or anti-static coating to improve its release characteristics.
Instead, a respective sheet of transparent plastics film 6 may be provided overlying each of the two faces of the card, which may be a single sheet of card and provided uniformly over the whole of its faces with the adhesive, each sheet of transparent plastics film 6 being adhesively united to the associated card 5 in a narrow region along the edge of the card remote from the binding.
In either arrangement, photographs can be mounted simply by peeling back the plastics film, positioning the photographs on the retentive coating and replacing the plastics film. Figure 1 shows photographs 7 mounted under the film 6 and the film partly peeled back prior to mounting further photographs. Of course, other sheet-like memorabilia besides photographs may be mounted in the album if desired, for example, a dinner place-card, a drinks mat, paper currency a theatre programme, a public transport ticket, a picture postcard and soon. The transparent plastics film has the effect of protecting the pressure-sensitive adhesive from environmental degradation and of protecting the photographs or other memorabilia. It is an advantage of the arrange ment that the memorabilia can be rearranged at will to secure the best aesthetic effect, so permitting creativity on the part of the user.
Referring to Figure 2, the second form of book also consists of an album with covers and is similar to the first form of book except that the pages of the album are photograph-mounting sheets with a retentive coating on one face and printed matter on the other face. An example of such a sheet is shown in Figure 2, the sheet consisting of thin card 8 provided with a retentive layer 9 on the one face. The other face of the card 8 bears printed matter (not shown) and a sheet of transparent plastics film 10 overlies the face of the card 8 with the retentive layer except for the area which is to be bound between the covers of the book.
It is also possible to make a book similar to that shown in Figure 1 but in which the photographmounting sheets and printed sheets are not arranged alternately but are arranged in groups.
Furthermore, a book can be made by binding sheets of one or both types described with reference to
Figure 1 with sheets of the type shown in Figure 2.
The book may be in loose-leaf form and consist of pages bound in a ring-binder.
It is contemplated that printed matter could also be provided on the transparent plastics film in addition to the printed matter on the printed sheets.
It is not essential for the whole side of a sheet to be devoted to mounting photographs, part of a side with a correspondingly-sized plastics film may be provided for photographs and the remainder of the side may then be devoted to printed matter.
Instead of simple card, the sheets may be made of card faced with aluminium foil or another material.
The foil may be embossed and in that case, pressure-sensitive adhesive may be applied by a painting or rolling technique so that the adhesive fills the cavities formed by the embossing and presents a level surface over the whole of the face of the foil.
It is an advantage of the books described above that the printed sheets can be produced by conventional printing techniques and yet means enabling simple and ready mounting of photographs or similar items are also provided. It is envisaged that such books would be of especial value for providing a customised text. For example, the books could be made with a printed text relating to a particular tour holiday. The user may then add his or her own photographs of the holiday and so have a book which combines the personal nature of a photograph album with the literary value, interest and authority of the printed word. The production of the customised printed texts might, for example, be accomplished by means of a word processor, and the term "printed sheets" is used throughout the
Specification to include typed and hand-written sheets.
Where a more economical form of book is desired, for example, for publication as a guidebook for a historic building, then the book may have a very simple form of binding and the covers need be no more than outer pages of the book. Such a book with simple binding could take the form of a booklet with, for example, one or more staples binding the pages.
Except when the context requires otherwise, the term "book" is used throughout the specification to include a booklet.
It is also possible for printed matter taking up part of a page to be overlayed with transparent pressuresensitive adhesive applied to the whole page, so avoiding any need to restrict the adhesive to selected areas. In such a case, the printed matter can
be read through the adhesive.
