Abstract

A clamp for securing a closure member, for example, a door, in an aperture such as a doorway, the clamp including a rigid bar (1) with laterally extending end members (3, 4) for spanning the doorway on one side of the door, a penetration member (9) extending from the bar and adapted to pass through the closure member; and an abutment member (16) on the penetration member for abutment against the other side of the door to clamp the bar in a securing position. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A clamp Introduction This invention relates to a clamp for securing an aperture having a closure member, for example, a door in a building.
Unauthorised entry into buildings such as blocks of flats owned by local councils is a continuing problem particularly where the building or part of the building is unoccupied for a long period of time.
The doors and windows may well have the usual locks fitted to them but in order to deter vandals from attempting an entry other forms of security are desirable. Desirably any such further security device must be rigid and not easily broken. Furthermore, its presence must be readily apparent and it must not be easily displaceable unless the appropriate tools are used.
Object of the invention It is the main object of this invention to provide a clamp particularly for the door of a building which clamp may readily be positioned and provide additional security against the door being opened and which may readily be removed by an authorised person.
Statement of invention According to the present invention there is provided a clamp for securing an aperture having a closure member, the clamp including a rigid bar with end members for spanning the aperture on one side of the closure member, a penetration member extending from the bar for passing through the closure member and an abutment member on the penetration member for abutment against the other side of the closure member to clamp the rigid bar in position.
The penetration member may be screw-threaded with the abutment member in engagement therewith.
The penetration member may be provided with means for rotating the same to draw the abutment member against the other side of the closure member and into a clamping position. The said means may be a handle lockable against rotation.
The rigid bar may be telescopic, the end members thereof extending laterally to prevent rotation of the rigid bar about the penetration member when clamped.
The rigid bar may have a central elongate box section with each end section extending telescopically therefrom, the end sections carrying, at their extremities, the end members.
Drawings Figure 1 is a diagrammatic side elevation of a clamp constructed in accordance with the invention; and Figure 2 is an underneath view of the clamp of Figure 1.
Specific description Referring to the drawing, a clamp in accordance with the invention includes a rigid bar 1 having a central elongate box section 2 with end sections 3 and 4 extending telescopically therefrom. The sections 2, 3 and 4 are preferably formed of steel or iron. The two end sections carry at their extremities laterally extending end members 5 and 6 respectively each of which has a central pin 7 and 8 respectively.
Extending from the central section 2 and at the centre thereof is a penetration member 9 in the form of a screw-threaded rod. This rod passes through the central section 2 of the rigid bar 1 and has a handle 10 fixed thereto. This handle 10 has a gripping member 11 and a flange 12 with a hole 13 therein which registers in one position of the handle 10 with a hole 14 in a flange 15 welded to the central member 2.
In screw-threaded engagement with the penetration member 9 is an abutment member 16.
This may be in the form of a nut having flanges welded to it or this may simply be an elongate metal section with a screw-threaded hole therein to receive the penetration member.
The clamp of the invention finds particular application to securing doors of buildings which doors hav a centrally disposed letterbox opening.
When securing such doors with a clamp in accordance with the invention the abutment member together with the penetration member will be passed through the letterbox so that the abutment member would lie on the inside of the doorway and the rigid bar would lie on the outside.
Of course, if the abutment member will not readily pass through the letterbox then it would be detached from the penetration member, the penetration member passed through the letterbox and the abutment member re-engaged from the inside of the doorway. Prior to clamping, the telescopic ends 3 and 4 of the rigid bar would be extended for an appropriate distance so that the end members 5 and 6 would engage the door frame.
When in position, the angled section of the end members and also the spikes 7 and 8 will prevent unauthorised rotation of the rigid bar 1.
With the rigid bar 1 in position, the handle 10 is rotated until the abutment member firmly engages the inside of the door. The handle 10 is then secured by a lock being passed through the holes 13 and 14 to prevent further rotation of the handle.
It will be appreciated that a clamp constructed in accordance with the invention is applicable to the security of apertures other than doorways, for example it could be used on windows of the hinged type. Also the construction of the clamp may be other than that described above, for example, for use with a large number of standard sized doors or windows the clamp may not need a telescopic rigid bar. In this instance the end members may be attached to a single box section member the distance between the end members being so chosen as to span the appropriate doorway or window opening. Also, the abutment member may be provided with means to prevent its rotation by unauthorised persons, for example the extremities of the abutment member may be provided with spikes to bite into the inside of the door or alternatively or additionally the abutment may be provided with flanges at its ends.
