Description

SPECIFICATION Data entering device particularly for typewriters and terminals The invention relates to a data entering device, particularly for typewriters and terminals.
Such devices are used for entering a large number of characters, which take the form of letters, numbers or special mathematical or other symbols, in particular, into the allocated equipment, such as typewriters, computers, calculators or the like. It has hitherto been common practice to provide one key with several characters or symbols and simultaneously marking them with several such characters or symbols. The number of characters or symbols which can be applied legibly to a key is obviously limited; moreover, the lettering applied cannot be easily and quickly replaced by different sets of characters or symbols. It goes without saying that in the scientific field, for instance, with its numerous special symbols, frequent alternation between the normal alphabet and the special symbols is highly disadvantageous, particularly as typing errors may easily occur in this particular field.
The principal object of the invention is therefore to improve the device of the type already mentioned to the extent that the characters required may be represented simplyand may be of a high quality. Furthermore, a high degree of clarity and legibility should be obtainable, together with simple, low cost adaptation to the requirements applicable.
Finally, the device should facilitate the processing of numerous characters, symbols or sets of characters or symbols by providing a limited number of keys.
The invention therefore provides a data entering device for use with typewriters and terminals, having keys which are each provided with at least two symbols or characters which can be optionally preselected, an indicating element, which can be actuated, being allocated to each key, which element is arranged close to the associated key, or is integrated in it, wherein there is provided a decentralised control system for actuating the indicating elements of a key, in the form of liquid crystal (LCD), in which system each indicating element is provided with a control element in the form of a drive.
Only the preselected character is reproduced by the indicating element, thereby ensuring perfect legibility and allocation of the preselected symbol, character or set of characters or symbols. The indication guarantees immediate and direct allocation of the preselected character or symbol to the key in question. A key may therefore be provided with many more symbols or characters without requiring additional aids, for example comparison tables for comparing special symbols and lettering. Since only one character or symbol at a time is represented by the indication, a high degree of legibility is provided.
Because of the clear allocation of the character or symbol indicated to the key, incorrect operation is practically impossible. Special advantages are also provided, particularly in the case of modern matrix and laser printers, which enable any character or symbol to be simply represented in a high quality. With the device according to the invention, which provides a not inconsiderable improvement in entering facilities, these printing facilities can now also be fully exploited. Control electronics and provided for actuating the indicating elements, the electronics being designed to meet the requirements imposed.
It is evident that the entering facilities of the device can be altered simply by replacing the data set with another, which incorporates another set of symbols or characters. Thus the entire device need not be replaced, all that is required is for the information to be electronically transmitted.
This affords not inconsiderable production advantages, since keys, indicators and other mechanical/structural features of the devices can all be compatible, and the requirements and entry conditions can be largely met by the actuation electronics provided according to the invention. Reference is also made to the particular advantages of the invention when combined with a matrix printer. Thus the indication, with its segments, can also be broken down into a matrix to suit a matrix printer, and by using a central electronic control system, complete sets of symbols or characters can be replaced as key lettering at a terminal or on a typewriter, and taken over by the printer.
It is advantageous for the drive to be designed as an IC component (component containing an integrated circuit).
The component and the indicating element advantageously together form one structural unit, with the insertion of a printed circuit board and electrically conducting connections.
It is also an advantage for the structural unit to be supported on the lid or base.
In order to provide a simple structure, the indicator is arranged on a base, and a lid or the like is arranged to more in relation to the base. The lid may be displaced in relation to the base, according to the invention, by means of suitable guides, but may also be arranged to pivot about a hinge. By actuating the lid, the electrical contact in the key is closed in the normal manner.
It is emphasised here that the indicator according to this invention can also be arranged directly in the movable lid or the like.
The indicator is in this case actuated by suitable sliding contacts or other electrical connections which enable the lid to be moved.
There will now be described with reference to the drawings several examples to illustrate the invention. It will be understood that the description is given by way of example only and not by way of limitation.
Fig. 1 shows diagrammatically a section through a combined key, with a displaceable lid; Fig. 2 shows diagrammatically a section through an embodiment with a lid arranged to hinge; Fig. 3 shows diagrammatically a section through a key according to a further embodiment; Fig. 4 shows diagrammatically a further design of the lid; Fig. 5 shows a further possible lid design; and Fig. 6 shows a block diagram of control electronics.
Figure 1 shows a key 1. with a base 2 and a switch 4. A lid 6 is arranged so that it can be displaced relative to base 2, in the direction of arrow 8. Lateral surfaces 10 of the base. combined with allocated inner faces 1 2 of cap 6, act as a guide. An indicating element 14, which is here designed as a liquid crystal indicating element, is arranged on base 2. Each indicating element 14 may contain segments which can be combined together, by means of which segments the preselected character or symbol can be represented. Each segment may suitably be actuated individually by the user. It is evident that any characters or symbols can be displayed without extra expenditure and without difficulty. A user may also enter a number of his own characters or symbols as additional lettering, and the segments may be predetermined according to the requirements, in terms of their size, shape, arrangement, etc., so that the different characters or symbols are displayed according to the actuation process. Indicating element 14 is ormally actuated by pins 1 6. The lid 6 consists of a transparent plastics material, so that the characters or symbols displayed by means of indicating element 14 can be seen without difficulty by a user from above. The lid 6 is cup-shaped in design, and therefore also protects the enclosed display element 1 4. Since the central pin otherwise provided in key switches is not provided in this embodiment, display element 14 may be conveniently incorporated without difficulty. Furthermore, the guidance of the lid by means of inner faces 12, provides a safe, stable guide. Finally, this design guarantees comparatively simple assembly since the three essential components, namely base 2, display element 14 and lid 6, need only be placed one on top of the other.
Figure 2 shows an embodiment of the invention in which the lid 6 is arranged so that it hinges about a joint 1 8 relative to base 2.
Switch 4 is located on the side of base 2, and may be actuated by the laterai edge 20 of the lid 6. It is evident that the lid 6 may also consist of a transparent material in this design.
The embodiment shown in Figure 3 is particularly suitable when an LCD display element 14 is used, in which case a large number of feed wires are required for the numerous display segments to be provided. This can be achieved by arranging an integrated control circuit. i.e. a component 22. which contains an integrated circuit. in the immediate vicinity of display element 14, so that only the voltage supply and data transmission are required. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3.
this component 22 is arranged on a printed circuit board 24. in which case lateral rubber guide elements 26 are provided for display element 1 4. These components are supported on base 2 in a U-shaped recess 30, arranged on sprung tongues 32. The lid 6 is then arranged over this base 2.
In the further embodiment shown in Fig. 4, these components are located in the lid 6, in which projections 28 are provided as supports, on which rest printed circuit board 24, with component 22. Rubber guide elements 26, which rest on display element 14, are again arranged on the side. This component can then be installed on a commercially available base 2.
Finally, the further embodiment according to Figure 5 shows the arrangement of component 22 directly on the glass sheet of LCD display element 1 4. where both components are supported on a bracket 28. This lid design may also be installed on a conventional base 2, and instead of rubber guide elements 26 mentioned; other elements consisting of an electrically conducting material may also be used.
Control electronics may be provided for actuating display elements 14, as shown in Figure 6 in the form of a block diagram. Since the display consists of a large number of individual segments. a large total number of display segments must be monitored. For example, if an 8 x 1 2 point matrix and 70 indications are taken for the display, this gives 6720 display segmenets, i.e. a large number of segments. For this reason a decentralised control system is proposed, where each indication is given its own control system. This control system is operated by means of an integrated circuit which receives the information on the symbol to be displayed, once only, then displays this symbol independently. This information on all the symbols or characters may be contained in a central electronic structural element (ROM), or can be read in from the outside. This decentralised concept gives rise to a combination of integrated control circuit, display and key switch.
The assembly of LCD display element 14 and the drive (integrated control circuit 22) are installed in the key lid, as shown in the block diagram in figure 6. Integrated control circuits 22 receive their information via the input and output (I/O), then actuate LCD display element 14. The advantage of this arrangement lies in the small number of wires to the drive element. Whilst there are 28 connections between the drive element and LCD 28, there are 8 data and 2 voltage supply lines for the drive element.
