Abstract

A box is made from a blank comprising four panels connected side-by-side along crease or fold lines and which form the walls of the box. Each of the two end panels has an edge flap, a first edge flap 20 being glued to the external surface of the second end panel 10 and the second edge flap 19 being glued to the internal surface of the first end panel 13 to provide a double glue flap joint. Glue may be applied to both edge flaps and/or both end panels or one of each. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Boxes This invention relates to a method of manufacturing boxes, cartons or trays (hereinafter for convenience simply called "boxes") formed of board (corrugated or solid).
Such boxes are formed from a blank suitably shaped, creased, cut and/or pierced as required to suit the particular configuration of erected box required by the manufacturer and/or user.
Such blanks comprise at least three (most usually four) side - by - side connected panels which during erection are folded along crease lines to prpvide the walls of the box, one of the end panels having an edge flap which is connected to the other end panel to maintain the panels in closed erected wallforming relationship.
Such connection of the edge flap is usually by glueing or stitching (stapling). A glued connection provides a more aesthetically pleasing joint but a stitched connection is generally stronger and is less likely to be casually destroyed. Moreover the flap, whichever connection is used, may be disposed internally or externally of the erected box.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a glued joint stronger and less likely to be subject to casual destruction than hitherto.
According to the present invention there is provided, a blank for erection to a box and comprising a plurality of panels connected side - by - side along crease or fold lines, and adapted, in the erected box, to constitute the walls of the latter with each of the two end panels having an edge flap, and the edge flaps being adapted to be glued on opposite faces, each for securement to the other end panel whereby, in the erected box, there is a double glue lap joint (internal and external).
Also according to the invention there is provided a method of manufacturing a box, comprising forming a blank with a plurality of panels connected side - by - side along crease or fold lines and with an edge flap on each of the two end panels, glueing the opposite faces of the two edge flaps, and erecting the blank so that these panels constitute the walls of the erected box, which walls are connected together in closed configuration by the glued edge flaps each engaging the other end panel to provide a double glue lap joint (internal and external).
While reference has been made to glueing the edge flaps it will be manifest that the areas of the end panels with which the edge glaps make contact may alternatively or additionally be glued.
Further according to the present invention there is provided a box formed from a blank with its walls maintained in closed configuration by a double glue lap flap joint (internal and external).
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure lisa view of a blank according to the present invention; Figure 2 is a perspective view of a box partly erected from the blank; and Figure 3 is a detail showing the double glue lap joint.
The blank comprises four main side-by-side panels 10 to 13 joined by three crease lines 14 along which the panels can be folded to form a rectangular configuration in plan view. These panels constitute the walls of the erected box (see Figure 2) and panels 10 and 13 are connected as described later to maintain the closed rectangular configuration.
Each panel 10 to 13 has connected to one edge a flap 1 OA to 13A respectively along crease lines 15.
These flaps 1 OA to 1 3A are separated by slots or cutouts 16.
Each panel 10 to 13 has connected to its opposed edge a flap 10B to 13B respectively along crease lines 17. Again these flaps 10B to 13B are separated by slots or cut-outs 18.
As is well known, flaps lOAto 13Acan be folded to form the closed top of the erected box while flaps lOB to 13B can be folded to form the closed bottom of the erected box, the flaps being conveniently secured together in any convenient way known in the art.
According to this invention, however, each end panel 10 to 13 is formed along its free edge with an edge flap 19 and 20 respectively, there being a crease line 21 and 22 respectively between panels 10 and 13 and their edge flaps 19 and 20.
The edge flaps 19 and 20 are glued as indicated at 23 and 24 respectively on opposite faces so that in the erected box the glued face 23 of edge flap 19 will adhere to panel 13 internally of the box while the glued face of edge flap 20 will adhere to panel 10 externally of the box.
There is thus provided an aesthetically pleasing double glue lap joint which is stronger than a stitched (stapled) joint and which is at least as resistant to casual destruction as the latter.
