Abstract

Levers, locking.-In apparatus for rotating a shaft against an opposing force and locking it in its adjusted position until the actuating-member is reversed, applicable to brake - actuating mechanism for railway and road vehicles, extending ladders, tip wagons, brakes for cranes, winches, &c., window raising and lowering devices, &c., the shaft to be driven carries a cage d in which are pivoted pawls c coacting with teeth in a stationary casing a and with cams p on a boss n secured to an actuating-shaft turned by a lever or hand-wheel. Projections j on the cage loosely engage recesses q in the boss n. When the boss n is turned in the direction of the arrow, the parts j, q engage as shown and the cage d is rotated, reverse movement being prevented by the pawls c and casing a. When the boss n is turned in the reverse direction, it precedes the cage sufficiently to permit the cams p to disengage the pawls from the casing, after which the parts j, q re-engage to return the cage and its associated shaft. The two aligned shafts are carried in bearings in the casing a.
