Abstract

Apparatus for repairing pipe leaks, which apparatus comprises at least one clamp (2,4) which is adapted to embrace the pipe to be repaired, and a resilient sealing gasket (16) which in use is positioned between the clamp 6 and the pipe to be repaired, the clamp being effective in use of the apparatus to clamp the sealing gasket to the pipe to be repaired whereby a repair is effected. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Apparatus for repairing pipe leaks This invention relates to apparatus for repairing pipe leaks. This invention also relates to a method of repairing a leaking pipe.
When a pipe leak occurs, for example in a central heating system, it is desirable to stop the leak as soon as possible and, if possible, to carry out the repair without draining the system since the draining operation is time consuming and can therefore be costly.
It is an aim of the present invention to provide a simple and inexpensive means for effecting a quick temporary repair of a pipe leak.
Accordingly, this invention provides apparatus for repairing pipe leaks, which apparatus comprises at least one clamp which is adapted to embrace the pipe to be repaired, and a resilient sealing gasket which in use is positioned between the clamp and the pipe to be repaired, the clamp being effective in use of the apparatus to clamp the sealing gasket to the pipe to be repaired whereby a repair is effected.
Various types of clamp may be employed. Preferably the clamp is a one piece clamp but it can be in two separate parts if desired.
The one piece clamp may have two relatively moveable parts which are hinged together.
Preferably, the clamp is provided with abutting flanges.
Usually, the clamp will have retainer means for clamping the clamp in position on the pipe to be repaired. The retainer means will usually be a screw or a nut and bolt.
When the clamp has flanges, then one of the flanges may embody at least one captive nut for receiving a bolt.
The clamp may be formed from a plastics material.
Preferably the plastics material is a heat resistant plastics material so that, for example, the clamp is not softened when it is used on hot water pipes.
The resilient sealing gasket may comprise a piece of strip material which is formed to fold around the pipe.
The resilient sealing gasket may be made from a wide variety of materials, one such material being a rubber material.
The present invention also provides a method of repairing a leakage pipe, which method comprises positioning a resilient sealing gasket over the leaking part of the pipe, positioning at least one clamp over the sealing gasket, and tightening the clamp to clamp the sealing gasket to the pipe to be repaired whereby a repair is effected.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is somewhat schematic perspective view of pipe repair apparatus, Figure 2 is an end view of the pipe repair apparatus shown in Figure 1; and Figure 3 is a side view of the pipe repair apparatus shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown pipe repair apparatus comprising a one piece clamp having two rigid plastics clamp parts 2 and 4 which are linked by a flexible integrally formed hinged portion 6. The hinged portion 6 is formed integrally with the clamp parts 2 and 4 but is considerably thinner than the clamp parts 2 and 4 as shown most clearly in Figure 2. The clamp parts 2 and 4 extend to define juxtaposed flanges 8 and 10 which are provided with fixing holes 12 which serve to receive retainer means in the fixing form of bolts 13 and nuts 14. The bolts 13 are secured by means of the nuts 14 as will be appreciated. The nuts 14 may be captive in one of the flanges.
In use of the pipe repair apparatus, a pipe is positioned within the clamp and the clamp is tightened so that a resilient sealing gasket 16 of synthetic rubber material which is positioned within the clamp embraces the pipe to be reapired and consequent upon tightening of the nuts 14 and bolts 13 is clamped tightly against the damaged part of a pipe to be repaired so that a repair is effected simply and quickly.
It will be appreciated that by utilising pipe repair apparatus as hereinbefore described, a pipe in a central heating or other system may be quickly repaired without the need to drain the water from the system.
Various modifications may be made to the arrangement shown without departing from the scope of the invention and for example various alternative retainer means may be utilised to clamp the flanges 8 and 10 together. The nuts 14 may be round and they may have serrated reduced diameter portions which tightly fit in appropriate sized fixing holes 12 in order to retain the nuts 14 captive.
Alternatively, straight sided nuts may be fixed in correspondingly shaped fixing holes 12. The pipe repair apparatus may have clamps moulded to various sizes to fit 15, 22, 28, 35, 42, 54 and 67 millimetre pipes.
It is envisaged that the repair will be regarded as temporary and a more permanent repair may be subsequently effected at the most convenient time.
