Abstract
A ready-mixed adhesive preparation for use in fixing ceramic tiles comprises a polymer emulsion in water, a filler, water and a perfume or blend of perfumes. The polymer may be polyvinyl acetate or an acrylic polymer; the filler is suitably sand, dolomite clay or gypsum; and the perfume may be methyl anthranilate or piperonal. The compositions may also contain a thickener, e.g. a cellulose, a fungicide and a pigment.
Description
SPECIFICATION
Adhesive compositions
This invention concerns ready mixed adhesive preparation for use in fixing ceramic tiles.
Tiles are often fixed to walls of rooms in which an easily cleaned surface is desired for the purposes of hygiene. Such rooms include kitchens and bathrooms where a pleasantly smelling atmosphere is also often desired. Furthermore known adhesive preparations may contain ingredients which have unpleasant odours.
The object of this invention is to provide a ready mixed adhesive preparation capable of imparting a pleasant odour to a room in which it has been used.
Accordingly this invention provides a ready mixed adhesive preparation comprising a polymer emulsion in water, a filler, water and a perfume or a blend of perfumes.
The perfume may be, for example, for imparting an odour like that of pine, rose, cologne, or may even be a blend of perfume oils. Clearly, the perfume or blend of perfumes will be chosen according to the desired odour.
Particularly suitable as perfumes are certain aromatic compounds, such as esters and aldehydes. Examples of these are methyl anthranilate
and piperonal
Suitable specific examples of perfumes are those known as Cologne A105257 and Starlite Awl 05258.
The perfume or blend of perfumes may be incorporated in the adhesive preparations in any suitable way and may be a liquid (oil) or solid (powder) which is readily dispersed in the adhesive preparation. Alternatively, the perfume or blend of perfumes may be in the form of microencapuslated particles which are dispersed in the adhesive preparation, thus ensuring gradual release of perfume to the atmosphere.
Microencapsulated particles are prepared by a three phase component system consisting of perfume, carrier solution an additive material (a gel type for example) which coagulates on changes of pH allowing the particles to be formed by spray or freeze drying.
The amount of perfume incorporated in the adhesive preparations will be fairly small, usually from 0.05 to 5% by weight.
The adhesive preparations of the invention may be non-water resistant or water resistant.
For non-water resistant adhesive preparations the polymer may be polyvinyl acetate and the filler may be sand, carbonate, clay or gypsum. These preparations may also contain one or more of thickeners, such as cellulose, fungicides, such as thiadiazine, pigments such as titanium dioxide, coalescing agents such as 2, 2, 4-trimethyl - 1, 3- pentanediolmonoisobutyrate which is sold under the trade name "Texanol", and lightweight fillers, such as Pearlite or
Aerosil (fused silica), to increase bulk and or flow properties.
A typical non-water resistant adhesive preparation may comprise the following ingredients in percent by weight based on the total preparation:
Polymer Emulsion 5 to 50
Filler 20 to 80
Thickener 0.05 to 5
Water 10 to 50
Fungicide 0.01 to 5
Pigment 0.05 to 10
Perfume 0.05 to 5
Coalescing agent 0.05 to 5
Lightweight filler 0.05 to 5
For water resistant adhesive preparations the polymer may be an acrylic polymer or copolymer and the filler may be sand, carbonate, clay or gypsum. These preparations may also contain one or more of thickeners, such as cellulose, fungicides, such as Thiadizine, pigments, such as titanium dioxide, coalescing agents, such as that sold under the trade name "Texanol", and lightweight fillers, such as Pearlite or Aerosil, (fused silica).
A typical water-resistant adhesive preparation may comprise the following ingredients in percent by weight based on the total preparation:
Polymer emulsion 5 to 50
Filler 20 to 80
Thickener 0.05 to 5
Water 5 to 40
Fungicide 0.01 to 5
Pigment 0.5 to 10
Perfume 0.05 to 5
Coalescing agent 0.05 to 5
Lightweight filler 0.05 to 5
It should be noted that the adhesive preparations of the invention may also be used for grouting as well as for fixing tiles.
The adhesive preparations of the invention may be prepared in any suitable way. Usually the various ingredients will be mixed together in any desired order.
This invention will be further described by means of the following Examples:
Example 1
A non-water resistant ready-mixed adhesive preparation was prepared by mixing the following ingredients in the amounts stated:
TEXICOTE 03-001 (polyvinylacetate emulsion) 17.21% by weight
Dolomite 60.32% by weight
METHOCEL J20MS (hydroxy propyl methyl cellulose) 0.35% by weight
Water 16.55% by weight
THION 60 (Thiadiazine) 0.29% by weight
Titania 1.31% by weight Cologne A105257 3.97% by weight
Example 2
A water resistant ready-mixed adhesive preparation was prepared by mixing the following ingredients in the amounts stated: :
TEXICRYL 13-030 (Acrylic polymer emulsion) 19.52% by weight
Dolomite 65.31% by weight
CELACOL HPM 500 (Cellulose thickener) 0.58% by weight
Water 10.18% by weight
THION 60 0.38% by weight
Titania 0.88% by weight
