Abstract
The locking arrangement comprises a door plate (12) which carries a knob (10) in which a key reader (11) is mounted. The locking arrangement includes a gear train (18,19,20) locked by means of a solenoid operated arm to prevent the bolt (13) being withdrawn. By mounting the key reader (11) in the door plate (12) the installation of the apparatus can be simplified as no separate mounting means is required for the key reader (11). <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Access control apparatus
The invention relates to access control apparatus comprising a locking arrangement mounted on a door and arranged to operate a bolt which co-operates with a latch on the door frame, said locking arrangement having a handle for operating the bolt when the bolt is released by a locking mechanism, and means for contro.lling the locking mechanism, said means including a code reader for reading an encoded key.
Such apparatus in which the code reader is mounted on the wall in which the door is mounted is known to the applicant. This arrangement however requires a hole to be made in the wall for mounting the code reader as well as the work necessary to fit the lock onto the door. This work must by its nature be carried out on the site at which the installation is made and hence is relatively expensive to carry out.
It is an object of the invention to reduce the cost of installation of access control apparatus.
The invention provides access control apparatus as described in the opening paragraph characterised in that the code reader is.
mounted on the locking arrangement.
This arrangement has the advantage of limiting the site work necessary to install the apparatus, and consequently the installation costs may be reduced.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of access control apparatus according to the invention,
Figure 2 is an exploded perspective view of the locking arrangement shown in Fig. 1, and
Figure 3 is a rear elevation of the outside door plate shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 1 shows access control apparatus comprising a door 1 mounted on a door frame 2 in a wall 3 of an area to which access is to be controlled. A locking arrangement comprising a door plate 4, a handle 5, and a key reader 6 is mounted on the door 1. The key reader 6 may be substantially as described in UK Patent Specifications Nos 1582748-58 the contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. By mounting the key reader 6 on the door 1 the key reader can be arranged to enable the operation of the lock bolt rather than the latch mechanism on the door frame.
Also there is no need to provide a mounting position on the wall for the key reader and hence the lock mechanism and key reader can be mounted on the door remote from the site of installation.
As shown in Fig. 2 the locking arrangement comprises a cylindrical knob 10 in which a key reader 11 is mounted. The cylindrical knob 10 is mounted on a door plate 1 2 which is arranged to be mounted on that face of a door giving access to a secure ara which is outside the secure area. A withdrawable bolt 1 3 is carried by a body 14 which is arranged to be located in a recess in the door so that when the bolt 1 3 is extended it co-operates with a latch on the door frame.A bar 1 5 couples the movement of the knob 10 with an actuator 1 6 for the bolt 1 3. A second door plate 1 7 is mounted on the inside of the door and carries a mechanism comprising three interlocking gear wheels 18, 1 9 and 20 coupling a door knob to a bar 21. The bar 21 cooperates with the actuator 16 to enable withdrawal of the bolt 1 3. The mechanism on the second door plate 1 7 may include a key reader but alternatively may be operable without control or the control may be merely a pushbutton.
Fig. 3 shows a rear elevation of the door plate 1 2. The knob 10 is coupled to a gear wheel 30 which engages with a second gear wheel 31 which in turn engages with a third gear wheel 32. The gear wheels 30, 31 and 32 are constrained by part circular recesses 33, 34 and 35. The gear wheel 30 also engages with a toothed rack 36 which slides in a recess 37 and is biased by a spring 38.
The rack 36 and spring 38 acting in the recess 37 on the gear wheel 30 provide a restoring force for the door knob 10. The gear wheel 35 is provided with an aperture 45 in which one end of the bar 1 5 is located. A solenoid 39 located in a recess 40 controls an arm which engages in a siot 42 in the gear wheel 34. When the solenoid is unoperated the arm 41 enters the slot 42 and prevents any of the gear wheels rotating. When the solenoid is operated the arm 41 is withdrawn into the body of the solenoid 40 and the gear wheels are free to rotate when the knob 10 is rotated and hence the bolt 1 3 may be withdrawn to enable the door to be opened.
Leads carrying electrical signals from the card reader 11 pass through an aperture 46 in the gear wheel 30. These leads are fed through the door to a controller within the secure area and signals produced by the controller are fed to the solenoid 39 to lock or release the door locking mechanism.
A suitable key reader for this application is that sold by Philips Business Systems under the type reference LHD 8001 with an appropriate controller, for example that type under the type reference LHD 8020. Suitable locking mechanism are these sold by Salsbury
Locks Limited under the type references BP1 to BP4. When mounting the key reader in the knob of those locks it is necessary to modify the front escutcheon so that it is circular rather than square to fit the shape and dimensions of the knob. The key reader may be located on other parts of the door plate, for example in place of the key hole, or may be used with other locking mechanisms.
Claims (3)
1. Access control apparatus comprising a locking arrangement mounted on a door and arranged to operate a bolt which co-operates with a latch on the door frame, said locking arrangement having a handle for operating the bolt when the bolt is released by a locking mechanism, and means for controlling the locking mechanism, said means including a code reader for reading an encoded key characterised in that the code reader is mounted on the locking arrangement.
2. Apparatus as claimed in Claim 1, in which the locking mechanism includes a gear train between, the handle and the bolt and the means for controlling the locking mechanism includes a solenoid operated arm which is arranged to engage a member of the gear train to lock the bolt and to be released from the member of the gear train to release the bolt, the operation of said solenoid being controlled by means including the code reader.
3. Access control apparatus substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawings.
