Stapling, hand tools for.-A stapling-machine of the kind described in Specification 207,895 having means for straightening or holding straight the end staple whilst it is severed and driven, is provided with means for automatically stopping the movement of the straightening device before it touches the paper or anvil. The plunger 12, which is operated by the usual spring 15 and hand plate 14, has flanges 12<a> slidable in guides on the frame 6 and embraced by the legs of the straightening member 13. These legs, which are united by a strip 13b, spring at their upper ends into notches 19 in the flanges 12a and are provided with lugs 22. In operation, the member 13 descends with the plunger 12, when the plate 14 is struck, until the lower extremities 18 of the legs pass behind the prongs of the end staple. The lugs 22 then ride over the curved surfaces of a cam-plate 20 on the frame 6, disengaging the parts 13<a> of the member 13 from the notches 19, and allowing the plunger to travel alone to sever and drive the staple. When the plunger is released, it carries with it by friction the member 13 until the strip 13b engages a lip 25 on the plate 20, when the member 13 is held until its parts 13a spring into the notches 19. Upward travel of the plunger is limited by the engagement of the upper surface of the feed-operating cam 16 with a removable pin 23 in the frame. The lower part 24 of the guide channel 10 for the plunger is narrowed to form a close fit for the severed staple, and the shoulders so formed positively arrest downward movement of the member 13.
