213,688. Beach, E. S., and Frederick, F. R. Jan. 10, 1923. Type-bar machines.-The type-bars are arranged in two tiers, operated by upwardly and downwardly extending toggles respectively, the arrangement reducing the dimensions of the machine, and enabling the key-levers to operate the toggles by means of vertical connections. Upper and lower inclined tiers 66b, 67 of typebars are operated by downwardly and upwardly extending toggles 114, 116 and 105, 107 respectively, the toggle-arms 116, 107 being connected by links 119, 109 to alternate key-levers 66, 67 respectively. Preferably, the toggle-arms are of such length that the toggles do not dead-centre. The type-bars and toggles converge to the printing point, and the links 119, 109 are substantially vertical. The key-levers are parallel at the front and rear, and have middle bends 68a connected to the links 119, 109, the outer and inclination of the bends increasing slightly from the middle to the outside key-levers. The framework of the machine comprises a base or box 1 supporting the key-levers, a detachable frame 82 supporting the type-bars and toggles, and a detachable cover 71 for the type-bars and toggles. The base 1 is formed with a front comb 2 for the key-levers, and is provided with a cross plate 58 formed with a depending comb 61 on which the keylevers are fulcrumed, engagement being maintained by means of a comb-spring 63a supported by a cross-bar 62 on the plate. The frame 82 consists of converging sides, and a base 81, and is provided with arcuate combs 86, 96, 86, 94, 95 for guiding the type-bars, and arcuate combs 89, 83, and pivot-rods 88, 87 for supporting and .guiding the toggle-arms 116, 107 respectively. The combs 94, 95 have rectangular apertures engaging fingers 100, 100 on the type-bars. Returning-springs 110, 120 for the type-bars are connected to the combs 89, 93. The frame 82 is secured at the rear to a lug 59 on the plate 58, and is formed at the front with legs 83 secured to the base 1. The cover 71 fits over the frame 82 and is formed with horizontal wings which are secured to the base 1. A flange 69 on the cover is provided with a cushion 69a for the key-levers. Preferably, the type-bars are each provided with two types, and shift-mechanism is provided for the paper-carriage. Aligning for impression. - An aligning-guide 123, Fig. 2, is secured at the front of the base 81 of the frame 82, described above. Carriage-shift mechanism; paper-carriages.-A rock-shaft 8, journaled in the sides of the base 1, is provided with L-shaped arms 12 having pins 19 engaging the forked ends of shift-key levers 21. The back plate 46 of the paper-carriage is formed with channels 50, 48 receiving balls 18 and rollers 11 respectively, the balls running in an angle-bar 14 secured to the arms 12, and the rollers 11 being mounted on arms 9 secured to the rockshaft 8. Retaining-lugs 17 on the bar 14 engage the channel 50. Letter-spacing mechanism. - A plate 28, mounted on a shaft 30 which is pivoted to lugs 31 on the base 1, is formed with a rib or universal bar 32a engaging the printing and space-key levers 66, 67, 64. The shaft 30 carries a returning-spring 32 for the plate. A tongue 28a on the plate is provided with fast and loose dogs 35, 35 co-operating with an escapement wheel 26 which carries a pinion 27 engaging a rack 41 mounted on the paper-carriage 46. The loose dog is actuated by a spring-urged cam. The pinion 27 and wheel 26 are revoluble on a post 25 secured to the base 1. The paper-carriage is connected to a spring drum 56, Fig. 10, mounted on a bracket 57 on one of the shift-arms 12 supporting the paper-carriage. Carriage-releasing arrangements.-The feedrack 41, Fig. 2, is carried by levers 42 provided with releasing-fingers 44. Margin stops.-A flanged bar 146, Fig. 2, on ths paper-carriage 46 carries adjustable margin stops 148 adapted to engage lugs on the shaft 8. The stops consist of a stud which passes through a slot in the bar 146 and is secured by a clamping-screw 151. The part b of the bar 146 may be graduated. Ink-ribbon mechanism.-The ink ribbon passes between spools having ratchet-wheels 138, Fig. 10, co-operating with feed-teeth 129 on springs 130 secured to the rocking plate 28 that carries the universal bar 32. The ratchet-wheels co-operate also with detent-teeth 134 on springs 132 secured to the base 1. The feed is reversed bv means of a manually-movable slide 127 having lugs 128 engaging the springs 130, and lugs 136 engaging the ends of the springs 132. The slide is retained by engagement of notches in the lugs 136 with one of the springs 132. The spools are mounted on the wings of the cover 71, described above.
