Abstract

The object of providing a horizontal boring and/or milling machine with a frame which, with comparatively similar dimensions to those of known angle frames of machines for machining plate-shaped workpieces, has at least the same course lengths, but enables the machining on four sides of box-shaped workpieces with a horizontal operating spindle (17) is solved by the arrangement of the guides for the headstock assembly (6) and the workpiece support assembly (9, 10) in each case on the exterior of frame legs (2, 3) in a perpendicular plane and with a horizontal guiding direction. A workpiece exchanger 14 may be provided. The design prevents the accumulation of machining waste on parts of the machine and enables the machining of box-shaped workpieces, without an increase in material or space requirements and with the necessary strength parameters. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Horizontal boring and/or milling machine The invention relates to a horizontal boring and/or milling machine able to machine boxshaped workpieces.
Modern machine tools for machining boxshaped workpieces generally enable machining on at least four sides, although many machines also enable five-sided machining of the workpieces in one clamp setting of these workpieces. In the interests of cutting down the numbers of staff required to operate a machine of this type, the workpiece is disposed, inter alia, in such a way that the machining waste falls under its own weight under the effect of gravity and is captured and removed by an evacuation device disposed under the workpiece. Machine constructions of this type are described, for example, in the East German Patent Specification 137546 and the West German Patent Specification 2 653 928.
However, there is a drawback in both of these arrangements in that it is impossible completely to avoid the accumulation of machine waste on parts of the machine frame.
In the arrangement of the W. German Patent Specification 2 653 928 the machine waste may fall on to the guideways for the cross slides and for the headstocks which are disposed in a horizontal plane, whereas in the arrangement of the East German Patent Specification 137546 the machine waste may fall on to the guides for the workpiece support. These waste deposits lead, as is known, to pockets of heat and associated drawbacks and may be detrimental to the guideways per se, which disadvantages may only be prevented by costly guideway covers.
In order to machine, for example plate-shaped workpieces flat it has been proposed to use (see East German Patent Specification 1 54071) a basic machine construction which has no horizontally disposed surfaces in practice, on which waste could accumulate, in the dispersion area of the machine waste. However, this construction may not be used for the machining of box-shaped workpieces for reasons of savings in material.
If it were desired to construct a machine for machining box-shaped workpieces using this basic construction, the machine would have to have substantially longer frame legs which would lead to the lever arms of the power application points being correspondingly longer. In order to ensure the same resistance to bending there is a higher requirement for material. The larger dimensions of the frame legs also lead to a greater space requirement which is disadvantageous with respect to the utilisation of the production area.
In the case of the machining of box-shaped workpieces the possibility of machine waste falling on to parts of the machine should be avoided whilst retaining the possibility of the machine waste falling under the effect of gravity into an evacuation device. The material and space requirements for the basic construction should not be greater than those of machines for the machining of plate shaped workpieces, whilst retaining the same strength parameters.
The defects described above are caused by the basic construction utilised.
The object of the invention is to provide a frame for a machine for the machining of box-shaped workpieces which has, with dimensions which are comparatively similar to those of the angle frame for the machining ol plate-shaped workpieces, at least the same course length, but enables machining of box-shaped workpieces on four sides with a horizontally disposed operating spindle.
According to the present invention, there is provided a horizontal boring and/or milling machine having an angle frame, in which both legs are supported with the surfaces lying in a plane and orthogonally with respect to one another, one leg receiving a head-stock assembly and the other leg receiving a workpiece support and cross slide in each case in a perpendicular plane, orthogonal to the support surface of the legs and with a horizontal guiding direction, wherein the clamping surface of the workpiece support is disposed perpendicularly, characterised in that a guideway for the workpiece support and cross slide is disposed on the exterior of one leg and in that n guideway for the headstock assembly is disposed on the exterior of the other leg and in that a clamping surface of the workpiece support is disposed othogonally to the exterior of the said one leg receiving the said workpiece support and cross slide.
The present invention will be more fully understood from the following description given by way of example only with reference to the single figure of the accompanying drawing which is a perspective view of a machine constructed in accordance with the invention.
The legs 2 and 3 of the angle frame are fastened to a base plate 1. The guideway 5 for the headstock assembly 6 is disposed on the exterior 4 of the leg 2 and the guideway 8 for the workpiece support assembly comprising the cross slide 9 and the workpiece support 10 is disposed on the exterior of the leg 3. The workpiece support 10 comprises a clamping surface 11 and may be rotated about a horizontal axis In the case of a four-axle machine. A tool store 12 is disposed above the leg 2 and a tool exchanger 13 is disposed above the headstock assembly 6. An advantageously provided workpiece exchanger, which may be rotated or pivoted about an axle 16, is designated by 14. An evacuation system for machine waste, which would be disposed on the base plate 1 under the headstock assembly 6 and below the workpiece support 10, is not shown. It would be advantageous to select an evacuation system on the machine at the left-hand side of the figure of the accompanying drawing.
In the interests of increasing the degree of compactness of the machine, the electrical and/or hydraulic installations 15 are disposed in the space bounded by the inner sides of the legs 2 and 3.
The modus operandi of the machine of the invention is as follows Using the advantages of the angle bed with respect to the optimum possible embodiment thereof from the point of view of strength, the invention enables the machining of box-shaped workpieces without needing to lengthen the legs 2 and 3 of the angle frame. In contrast, the frame may be shortened by the width of a leg with respect to both legs 2 and 3, with identical course lengths 2 and 3, in comparison to the angle frame of the East German Patent Specification 1 54071.
This enables both savings in materials and a more rational use of space as a result of the lower space requirement of the machine. In addition, it is possible to use the inner space of the angle frame for the arrangement of the electrical and/or hydraulic installations 15.
When a workpiece is fastened to the clamping surface 11 of the workpiece support 10, it is machined by means of the tool clamped in the operating spindle 17. The machining waste will fall downwardly under the effect of gravity into the evacuation device (not shown) and this will take place in an unhindered manner. The working area of the machine contains no horizontal surfaces on to which the machining waste can fall. The guideways 5 and 8 may be protected in the region of the working area with relatively simple, perpendicularly extending telescopic covers.
A further advantage of the proposed arrangement is that it provides very good possibiliites for operation of the machine of the invention. Whereas, as described above, the evacuation device transports the machining waste to the left, the workpiece exchange takes place to the right. The operator may stand in front of the working area and come very close to the operating spindle 17 and the workpiece support 10. It is also possible for the operator to look at the point of contact of the tool with the workpiece from a very acute angle from the direction of the headstock assembly 6, which is very advantageous during setting of the machine.
