212,993. Invernairn, (W. Beardmore), Lord, and Chorlton, A. E. L. Dec. 21. 1922. Planes, construction of.-In a wing built up in three parts with the central part constituted by a box girder, the stressed upper and lower metal surfaces of the girder are laminated, the number of superposed metal plates being decreased towards the wing tips as shown A, A<1>, A<2> and B, B<1> B<2>. The depth of the flanges D, E may also decrease towards the tips. The joints in the superposed layers may be arranged out of line as shown in Fig. 5. The innermost plates may be stiffened on the inner side by light metal trays. The front and rear former parts L, M of the wing may be hinged to the central part at their lower edges and be formed with open frames sufficiently elastic to be accommodated t'o the girder and fixed thereto at the upper edges by bolts passing through extensions N.
