Abstract

The hoisting frame comprises a base frame (6) having guides (2) fixed to the base frame and extending upwardly therefrom, and a lifting device (4) which is slidably mounted on the guides (2) via sliders (10). Ropes (9) are connected at one end to the lifting device (4) and have respective clamping devices (7) suspended from their lower ends, each clamping device having two gripping elements which are operated to grip a portion of a sack therebetween prior to transport of the sack. The lifting device (4) is able to slide up and down on the guide (2) in order to raise and lower the a sack relative to the base frame (6). First attachment means is provided to enable the base frame (6) to be suspended from a haulage drum of a crane via a rope (1), and second attachment means is provided to enable the lifting device (4) to be suspended from a further hoisting drum of the crane via rope (3). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Hoisting frame for use in transporting a flexiblewalled container This invention relates to a hoisting frame for use in transporting a flexible-walled container, the hoisting frame being intended primarily, though not exclusively, for use in transporting sacks of material to and from the cargo compartments of ships having under deck areas.
The hoisting frame of the invention has been developed primarily, though not exclusively, with a view to enable the transport of flexible-walled containers i.e. sacks, having a volume in excess of one cubic metre and made of, for example, polypropylene, polyethylene or other materials used in making sacks and flexible-walled containers.
It is known to provide carriers for the transport of sacks and the like which comprise beams having carrying ropes with clamping devices for engaging the sacks and arranged so that the distance between the loads to be carried and the beam does not vary.
A disadvantage of such carriers is that the total height of the beam, carrying ropes and clamping devices is excessive, and this prevents them from being employed satisfactorily in under deck areas of barges and ships.
It is also known to provide clamping devices for sacks which basicly comprises a triangular frame, having a gripping or pressing axle arranged eccentrically in its lower end via a pair of discs or rectangular plates, the axle being fixed against the plates and another pressing axle being provided which is rotatable freely in grooves provided in the plates. The clamping device operates with the axles in a horizontal position, when a band of the contain er is placed between them, and the axles are manually rotated through 360" in the direction of the fixed axle. When the clamping device is lifted with the hoisting unit, the pressing axles exert a self tightening effect. A disadvantage of this tightening effect is that when turned in a direction opposite to that specified, on account of carelessness of an operator, the sack could slip from the clamping device.Afurther disadvantage is the extreme height of the clamping device, which prevents use of the clamping device satisfactorily in the loading of sacks in under deck areas of barges and ships.
The present invention has been developed primar ily, though not excusively, with a view to provide a hoisting frame, with a clamping device which can grip satisfactorily a flexible-walled container, in which there can be a variable distance between the load to be carried i.e. a sack and a load bearing part of the hoisting frame, and in which a smaller overall height can be occupied than in the known arrange ments.
According to the invention there is provided a hoisting frame for use in transporting a flexible walled container and comprising: a base frame; guides fixed to the base frame and extending upwardly therefrom; a lifting device; a flexible elongate tensile element connected at one end to the lifting device; a clamping device suspended from an opposite end of the tensile element and having two gripping elements which are operable to grip a portion of a flexible-walled container therebetween prior to transport of the container; means mounting the lifting device for slidable movement on the guide so that the lifting device can raise and lower a container, when gripped by the clamping device, relative to the base frame; and first and second attachment means provided respectively on the base frame and on the lifting device to which respective independently operated devices can be attached.
Thus, the task is solved with a hoisting frame with clamps for elastic (flexible-walled) containers comprising a carrier with several clamps, wherein the carrier is a base frame with vertical guides, rollers and counterweight fixed thereon, and through said rollers there run ropes carrying clamps, and to the vertical guides there is mounted a pulling-outele- ment (lifting device) in both ends of which there are fixed sliders and ropes, and the pulling-out element and the base frame are connected respectively through a junction rope and a hoisting rope to both haulage drums of a crane.
According to a first embodiment of the invention the vertical guides and rollers are symmetrical to the vertical axis of the base frame, and the pulling-out element is a rectangular frame connected to the hoisting rope, passing through the centre of gravity of the basic frame, and the junction rope is suspended at a distance "e" from the centre of gravity of the base frame.
In accordance with a second embodiment of the invention the rollers with clamps are mounted on the base frame, on one side of the vertical guides that lie in a plane passing through the centre of gravity of the system "hoisting-frame - containers", and the pulling-out element is a beam and in its middle there is suspended the hoisting rope, and the junction rope is suspended on the basic frame in a point of the axis passing through the centre of gravity of the hoisting frame.
The clamp for elastic containers consisting of two pressing axles and hand grips, and one pressing axle is fixed to the lower ends of arms having upper ends which are fixed to carrying axles, and the other pressing axle is fixed to the lower ends of the arms, the upper ends of which are swivelled to the carrying axles externally to the arms, and on them there are mounted in series rollers (pulleys) for carrying ropes, distance sleeves and hand grips.
An advantage of the hoisting frame with clamps is that thanks to the pulling-out element and the pulling-out ropes the distance between the load and the hoisting frame is not fixed, and could be varied in accordance with the requirements of the loading technology used.
The advantages of the clamp are that thanks to the fixed pressing axles with the arms of the band of the elastic container seizes in all cases of turning one of said pressing axles, that does not rotate round its own axis and thus the sliding of the band is excluded. The small design height of the clamp makes it convenient for application in underdeck areas, and its low weight facilitates handling opera tions.
The invention will now be described in more detail, by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a side view of a first embodiment of hoisting frame in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line A-A in Figure 1; Figure 3 is a side view of a second embodiment of hoisting frame according to the invention; Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line A-A in Figure 3; Figure 5 is a side view of a further embodiment of the invention with manually suspended clamping devices; Figure 6 is a view taken in the direction of the arrow A in Figure 5; Figure 7 is an enlarged front view of a clamping device for use in the hoisting frames of the invention; and Figure 8 is a side view of the clamping device shown in Figure 7.
Referring now to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, there is shown a hoisting frame which is intended to be suspended via independently operated hoisting ropes 1 and 3 which are carried by respective haulage drums (not shown) of a crane of the type suitable for loading and unloading cargo from the under deck areas of ships and barges. The hoisting frame comprises a base frame 6 having four vertical guides 2 fixed to the base frame 6 and extending upwardly therefrom. The guides are arranged in pairs, symmetrically about the centre of gravity of the base frame 6, and serve to mount a lifting device slidablythereon, such lifting device moving up and down along the guides 2 in order to raise and lower flexible-walled containers, such as sacks, relative to the base frame 6.The lifting device comprises a lifting frame 4 which is mounted on the guides 2 via sliders 10. Ropes 9, or other flexible tensile elements, are attached at one end to the lifting frame 4, and carry clamping devices 7 at their lower ends which serve to grip the sacks which are to be transported.
As will be seen from Figure 1, some of the ropes 9 extend directly downwardly from the lifting frame 4, whereas others of the ropes 9 extend along the base frame 6, via guiding devices in the form of pulleys 8, before they extend downwardly to the corresponding clamping devices 7. As will be described in more detail below, each clamping device 7 comprises two gripping elements which are operable to grip a portion of a flexible-walled container therebetween prior to transport of the container. The clamping devices 7 exert a self-gripping effect on a container, which is dependent on the weight of the container gripped thereby.
First attachment means is provided to enable the base frame 6 to be suspended via rope 1 from a haulage drum of a crane, this first attachment means comprising a triangular arrangement connected to the upper ends of the guide 2. Second attachment means is provided to enable the lifting frame 4to be suspended via rope 3 from a further drum of the crane, this comprising a triangular arrangement connected at its lower ends to the ends of the frame 4 adjacent to the sliders 10. It should be noted that the rope 3, which is attached to the second attachment means, is located on the line of the centre of gravity of the base frame 6, whereas the rope 1 is longitudinally spaced from the line of the centre of gravity by distance e, though this off-centre positioning of the first attachment means is compensated by the provision of a counterweight 5 provided on one end of the base frame 6.
Referring now to Figures 3 and 4, there is shown a second embodiment of hoisting frame, and parts generally corresponding with those already described and illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 are designated by the same reference numerals. However, in this embodiment, the clamping devices 7 and the pulleys 8 are arranged on one side only of a plane containing the rope 3. Further, as will be seen particularly from Figure 4, a pair of guides 2 only are provided, which are contained in a plane extending perpendicular to the general longitudinal axis of the elongate rectangular base frame 6. The plane containing the guides 2 also contains the centre of gravity C1 of the entire system i.e. the combined hoisting frame and sacks.
The lifting device 4, in this embodiment, comprises a lifting beam which extends in the perpendicular plane containing the guides 2, and which is mounted on the guides 2 via the sliders 10. Midway along the beam of the lifting device 4, there is provided an attachment for lifting rope 3 of the crane.
A large counterweight 5 is provided at the righthand end of the base frame 6, as seen in Figure 3, and the base frame 6 is suspended from the rope 1 at a position along the length of the base frame 6 which is closely adjacent to the counterweight Sand the right hand end of the frame. The rope 1 lies on a line passing through the centre of gravity C2 of the hoisting frame.
Referring now to Figures 5 and 6, there is shown a construction of hoisting frame which comprises an elongate rectangular base frame 6 provided with ropes 9 which are suspended from the frame 6 via cantilever arms 31 (see Figure 6). Counterweight 5 is provided atthe right hand end of the base frame 6, and a lifting beam 32 is provided on the base frame 6 near the right hand end thereof, to enable hoisting rope 3 to be attached to the hoisting frame. As will be seen from Figure 6, seats 30 are provided in the base frame 6 to provide bearing support for the clamping devices 7. Counterweight 5, mounted at one end of the base frame 6, may be a variable counterweight.
The construction of hoisting frame shown in Figures 5 and 6 operates in the following manner: The clamping devices 7, when the hoisting frame is lifted, are suspended from the base frame 6 on ropes 9 which are of equal lengths. The attachment of flexible-walled containers to the clamping devices 7 is as already described. Upon lifting the loaded hoisting frame, the axles of the clamping devices 7, if not parallel, become self-aligned in parallel due to the fact that they are suspended on two parallel ropes 9. Thereafter, the hoisting frame is lowered onto the bilge boards (floor) until the distance from the base frame 6 to the clamping devices 7 is adequately reduced so that the clamping devices 7 can be manually suspended from the seats 30.The hoisting frame is again lifted, but this time, from the overall height of the system (sacks, clamping devices 7, ropes 9 and base frame 6) the lengths of the ropes 9 can be excluded. Accordingly, this hoisting frame can be readily used to enter the low under deck areas of ships and barges. When it is required to be used in very deep under deck areas, one sack only could be hung at the end of the hoisting frame and counterweight 5 is balanced with additional weights. Further, hoisting rope 3 can be repositioned in any one of attachment holes provided along the length of the lifting beam 32. The position of the attachment of the rope 3 will be dependent upon the displacement of the centre of gravity of the overall system, caused by variation in the number of sacks and the weight of the counterweight.
Referring now to Figures 7 and 8 of the drawings, the construction of one of the clamping devices 7 is shown in more detail. The device comprises a pair of carrying axles 12 to which there are fixed the upper ends of first arms 16, the lower ends of the arms 16 having a first pressing axle 15 extending therebetween and fixed thereto. A second pair of arms 13 are pivotally mounted at the upper ends on the axles 12, and have a second pressing axle 14fixed to their lower ends and extending therebetween. The carrying axles 12 have hand grips 11, bearing-sup- ported rollers or pulleys 17, and distance pieces or sleeves 18 mounted thereon externally of the arms 13 and 16. The sleeves 18 determine the side travel of the rollers 17.
The operation of the embodiments of hoisting frame shown in Figures 1 and 2, and Figures 3 and 4 will now be described.
In order that suspension of the flexible-walled containers from the clamping devices 7 can be initiated, the hoisting frame is moved via rope 1, with the lifting device 4 remaining in its lowermost position on the guide 2, and the clamping devices 7 are thereby suspended under the base frame 6 at maximum distance. The hoisting frame is lowered down onto a store of the sacks e.g. a loading wagon, and the clamping devices 7 are fastened to band-like portions of the sacks. Lifting of the sacks only starts when the hoisting rope 3 is operated via its haulage drum, so that lifting device 4 is raised, thereby drawing the sacks upwardly towards the base frame 6. In an upper limiting position of the device 4 on the guides 2, the lifting device 4 engages the upper ends of the guides 2, thereby causing the entire hoisting frame to be raised during subsequent winding-in of the rope 3.At this moment, a motor is switched on so as to achieve synchronous winding-in of the rope 1, though without the latter taking any appreciable portion of the load. Accordingly, the ropes 1 and 3 can thus be wound in without risk of entanglement.
Subsequently, the hoisting frame is lowered into the under deck area of a barge or ship, and the sacks then rest on the bilge boards. The rope 1 which is connected to the base frame 6 is pulled-out, and the rope 3 connected to the lifting device 4 is loosened a little. The clamping devices 7 are then manually rotated via the hand grips 11,so as to release the engagement between the clamping devices and the sacks. The hoisting frame can then be raised so as to return to the store of sacks for a further loading operation.
The clamping engagementwhich is obtained by means of the clamping devices 7 is an automatic self-adjusting engagement, in that the gripping action exerted is dependent upon the weight of the container gripped thereby. In order to permit clamping engagement between the pressing axles 14 and 15, the hand grips 11 are rotated so as to move the axle 15 into an upper position in which a space is defined between the axles 14 and 15 into which a band portion of the sack or flexible-walled container can be taken. Further manual operation of the hand grips 11, in either direction, causes the axle 15 to move towards pressing engagement with the axle 14 so that both together, with the band of the sack held therebetween, they are all additionally rotated through 360". When the clamping device 7 is raised by the hoisting frame, the pressing axles 14 and 15 exert a self-tightening effect and, being fixed to the arms 13 and 16, they do not rotate about their axes, and this prevents the band of the sack from slidingout. The release of the bands of the sacks is achieved by carrying out a reverse sequence.

Claims (13)

1. A hoisting frame for use in transporting a flexible-walled container and comprising: a base frame; guides fixed to the base frame and extending upwardly therefrom; a lifting device; a flexible elongate tensile element connected at one end to the lifting device; a clamping device suspended from an opposite end of the tensile element and having two gripping elements which are operable to grip a portion of a flexible-walled container therebetween prior to transport of the container; means mounting the lifting device for slidable movement on the guide so that the lifting device can raise and lower a container, when gripped by the clamping device, relative to the base frame; and first and second attachment means provided respectively on the base frame and on the lifting device to which respective independently operated hoisting devices can be attached.
2. A hoisting frame according to claim 1, in which the elongate tensile element extends along the base frame via one or more guiding devices provided on the base frame.
3. A hoisting frame according to claim 2, in which the or each guiding device comprises a pulley.
4. A hoisting frame according to any one of the preceding claims, in which the lifting device comprises a lifting frame or beam mounted on the guides via sliders.

A hoisting frame according to any one of the preceding claims, in which the base frame is an elongate frame which extends symmetrically outwardly from its centre of gravity, which is located mid-way between a pair of longitudinally spaced guides, and in which the second attachment means of the lifting device is located along the line of the centre of gravity of the base frame and the first attachment means of the base frame is longitudinally spaced from the line of the centre of gravity, a counterweight being provided on the base frame to compensate for the off-centre positioning of the first attachment means.
6. A hoisting frame according to any one of claims 1 to 4, in which the base frame is an elongate frame having a pair of guides which extend in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the frame, and the lifting device comprises a lifting beam having said second attachment means located substantially mid-way of the beam, and in which said first attachment means is arranged on the base frame in line with the centre of gravity of the entire hoisting frame.
7. A hoisting frame according to claim 6, in which the plane containing the pair of guides also contains the centre of gravity of the combined hoisting frame and container.
8. A hoisting frame according to any one of the preceding claims, including a plurality of rope or cable-suspended clamping devices.

A hoisting frame according to any one of the preceding claims, in which the gripping elements of the or each clamping device comprise a first pressing axle extending between and fixed to the lower ends of a first pair of arms which have their upper ends fixed to and carried by respective carrying axles, and a second pressing axle extending between and fixed to the lower ends of a second pair of arms which have their upper ends pivotally connected to said carrying axles.
10. A hoisting frame according to claim 9, in which the first and second pressing axles are arranged to exert automatically a gripping action on a flexible-walled container which is dependent on the weight of a container gripped thereby.
11. A hoisting frame according to claim 9 or 10, including hand grips, distance pieces, and pulleys mounted on the carrying axles externally of the upper ends of the second pair of arms.
12. A hoisting frame according to any one of the preceding claims, in which the lifting device is suspended, via a rope connected to said second attachment means, from a haulage drum of a crane, and the base frame is suspended, via a further rope connected to the first attachment means, from a further haulage drum of the crane.
13. A hoisting drum according to claim 1 and substantially as hereinbefore described with refer ence to, and as shown in any one of the embodi ments illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
