Abstract

Retort furnaces; air and gases, supplying.-Distillation products such as tars and gases are obtained from coal, peat and the like by passing the material in thin layers over a heated vibrating surface in a furnace chamber of great length. The fuel from a hopper 1 is delivered on to a hearth of saw tooth profile having inclined surfaces 7 and vertical edges 8, and is caused to travel over the surface of the hearth and is discharged into a shaft 18. The hearth is heated by gas burners 24 the combustion chambers 25 being supplied with cold air or cold exhaust gases through a pipe 26 to regulate the temperature.
