Abstract

212,515. Holley, E., (Assignee of Meloche, D. H.). March 5, 1923, [Convention date]. Drawings to Specification. Cementation.-Metal moulds are coated with a refractory insulating material preferably of a permanent nature as described in Specification 202,2,73, [Class 83 (i), Casting &c. metals], and then with a thick layer of amorphous carbon freshly applied before each pour in order to produce soft castings. The refractory coating may comprise fireclay <1>/64 of an inch thick and the carbon layer lamp black from an acetylene flame of such thickness that it is intact after the casting has been removed. The thickness of the carbon layer should be sufficient to ensure slow cooling about 30 seconds for an irregular casting of 2 lbs. weight. Surplus carbon and dirt is removed by air blast before applying the fresh layer as described in Specification 199,390, [Class 83 (i), Casting &c. metals]. This also helps to keep the temperature of the refractory coating below 1150‹ F., but it should not be allowed to fall below 560‹ F. Specification 201,913 also is referred to.
