Abstract

A licence holder for displaying a paper disc comprises two holder forming members 10 and 11 which are interconnected by a hinge means 12. The holder forming members 10 and 11 can be brought to lie one against the other with a flange 19 received in a recess 20 so as to provide accommodation for the paper disc therebetween. The rear outer side of the member 10 is provided with a recess 18 and the member 11 is provided with a slot 23 so that when the members 10 and 11 are brought together, a mounting bracket can extend through the slot 23 and into the recess 18 so that the members 10 and 11 are held in a closed position. The licence holder can be secured to a vehicle by passing a bolt through a hole in the mounting bracket. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Vehicle licence holders This invention relates to vehicle licence holders and particularly to a licence holder having a mounting bracket which is secured to the vehicle by means of a bolt.
A known type of licence holder which, for example, may be used on motor cycles is constructed entirely of a plastics material and has a mounting bracket which forms an integral part of the holder. A disadvantage of such a holder is that the plastics material tends to creep when in compression, so that the mounting bracket becomes loose at the point at which the mounting bracket is secured to the vehicle thus resulting in the possible loss of any item held by the holder and even the holder itself.
It should be understood that the term "licence holder" is used in a general sense and may equally apply to holders for holding a paper disc or the like other than a licence for displaying on a vehicle.
According to the present invention there is provided a licence holder comprising two holderforming members, said members being interconnected by a hinge means to enable said members to be brought to lie one against the other so as to be capable of receiving a licence disc or the like therebetween, one side of one of said members forming a rear outer side when said members are brought to lie one against the other, said rear outer side being provided with a recess, and the other member being provided at its periphery and at a location opposite said hinge means with a slot, which, when said members are brought together, is aligned with said recess, and a mounting bracket comprising a plate, which, when said members are brought together, extends through said slot and into said recess.
The mounting bracket is preferably provided with a tab our a projection which engages a part of the other member which forms said slot, so that the holder forming members are retained on said mounting bracket, said mounting bracket being preferably formed from a metal material.
Said holder forming members are preferably formed from an integral one-piece moulded plastics material, said hinge means being formed by a recess disposed in a joining portion which interconnects said holder forming members.
One of said holder forming members is preferably provided with an annular projecting portion which is received by a corresponding annular recess provided in the other holder forming member when said members are brought to lie one against the other.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of an example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1 is a sectional view of a vehicle licence holder according to an embodiment of this invention when in an open position and taken along the line 1-1 indicated on Figure 2; Figure 2 is a plan view of the vehicle licence holder taken in the direction of arrow A indicated on Figure 1; Figure 3 is a plan view of the rear side of the vehicle licence holder when in a closed position and having the mounting bracket in position; and Figure 4 is a section through the vehicle licence holder of Figure.
Referring first to Figures 1 and 2, there is shown a licence holder comprising a first and a second holder forming member 10 and 11 respectively. The first and the second holder members 10 and 11 are interconnected by a hinge means 12 which is formed by a 'V'-shaped recess 13 provided in connecting portions 14 which interconnect the first and second holder members 10 and 11 respectively. The first and second holder forming members 10 and 11, and the connecting portions 14 are preferably formed integrally from a single moulding of a plastics material.
However, the members 10 and 11 may be separately moulded and interconnected by a hinge means. The first holder forming member 10 comprises a planar base portion 15 on which are integrally formed a pair of ribbed portions 16 which are disposed on an outer surface of the holder forming member 10. One end of the ribbed portions 16 are connected to the connecting portions 14, the oppositely disposed ends of the ribbed portions 16 being connected to a flange 17 which is integrally formed with the base portion 15 along three of its edges, the flange 17 defining a recess 18 which faces away from the connecting portions 14.The periphery of the first member 10 is provided with a peripherally extending flange 19 which extends away from the outer surface, and the flange 19 is received in a corresponding recess 20 formed in the second member 11 when the first and second members 10 and 11 are brought to lie one against the other.
The second member 11 comprises a planar base portion 21, the recess 20 being formed by a 'U'shaped portion 22 provided around the periphery of the second member 11 in such a manner that it may receive the flange 19 when the first and second members 10 and 11 are brought to lie one against the other. A slot 23, which is defined by a flange 24 supported from the second member 11 by means of a pair of supporting members 25, is provided on the second member 11 at a location opposite to the connecting portion 14, but in alignment with the connecting portions 14 and the recess 18.
The slot 23 may alternatively be defined by an aperture (not shown) disposed in a portion of the 'U'-shaped portion 22 in the case where the outer peripheral limb of the 'U'-shaped portion 22 (as shown in Figure 1) extends downwardly of the flange 17 when the first and second members 10 and 11 are brought to lie one against the other, at a point on the portion 22 opposite to the connecting portion 14.
Figures 3 and 4 show the vehicle licence holder when in a closed position, that is when said first and second members 10 and 11 have been brought to lie one against the other. A mounting bracket 30 is slidably inserted through the slot 23 and into the recess 18, thus providing means for securing the first and second members 10 and 11 in a closed position and providing means for attaching the licence holder to a vehicle. The means whereby the licence holder may be attached to a vehicle is provided by a hole 31 through which a bolt may be passed and secured to the vehicle. In orderthatthe mounting bracket 30 may be retained on said first and second holding members 10 and 11, there is provided a tab 32 which projects from the mounting bracket 30 and engages the flange 24 by abutting an edge of the flange 24 disposed towards the flange 17.In orderto open the licence holder, the flange 24 should be displaced in the direction of arrow B in Figure 4, the tab 32 displaced in the direction of arrow C, and the mounting bracket 30 is simultaneously pulled out of the recess 18 by being pulled in a direction indicated by arrow D. The mounting bracket 30 is made from a metal so asto provide both strength and resilience.
