Abstract

A child's safety seat for use in a land vehicle, or in an air or marine craft comprises a seat body 10 having a seat portion 12 and a seat back 14. The seat portion 12 has a rigid zone 32 along its edge remote from the seat back 14 and a relatively compressible zone 34 between said rigid zone 32 and the seat back 14 so that in the event of sudden deceleration the zone 34 is compressed and the child is retained in the seat by the ridge 32. The seat body is pivotally mounted at 16 on a transverse member of a supporting frame and is secured in one of two positions of angular adjustment by a stud (44, Fig. 4) which projects through a slot 40 in a bracket 38 and carries a spring-loaded locking plunger (46, Fig. 4). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Child safety seat This invention relates to safety seats for use by children in land vehicles or air or marine craft.
Childs safety seats are commonly provided with a so-called full harness consisting of a lap strap and a respective strap for each shoulder. With such a harness, unless the seat is used in an almost completely upright position, there is a tendency for a child occupant to slide out under the lap strap in the event of sudden deceleration.
Such an event is commonly referred to as "submarining". Although a crotch strap may be used to prevent a child from wriggling into a position in which submarining is more likely to take place, it is not safe for the crotch strap to take full crash loads and thus be the sole means of preventing submarining.
According to the invention a child's safety seat for use in a land vehicle, or in an air or marine craft comprises a seat body having a seat portion and a back portion, a harness having lap straps and shbulder straps attached to respective anchorage points on the seat body and means for securing the seat body to the vehicle, the seat portion having a rigid zone along its edge remote from the seat back and a relatively compressible zone between said rigid zone and the seat back.
Thus, in the event of sudden deceleration in conditions when submarining could take place, the force exerted by the child's body on the compressible zone of the seat portion causes such zone to be compressed with the result that the rigid zone remains as a ridge along the front edge of the seat, thereby inhibiting submarining.
Preferably, the compressible zone is formed of a premanently deformable material.
In view of the provision of means, in accordance with the invention, to inhibit submarining, it is no longer necessary for a child's seat to be used in a substantially upright position as has been customary hitherto.
Consequently, it is possible to provide a reclinable child's safety seat. In accordance with a preferred form of the invention, the means for securing the seat to the vehicle comprises a frame adapted to be secured by an adult seat belt, the seat being pivotably attached to the frame adjacent to the anchorages for the shoulder straps and attached to the frame in the vicinity of the lap straps by means operative to secure the seat in a plurality of alternative positions.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which, Figure 1 is a side view of a childs safety seat in accordance with the invention, fitted to the rear seat of a motorcar, Figure 2 is a rear view of the seat shown in Figure 1, Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the seat portion of the body of the seat shown in Figures 1 and 2, and Figure 4 is a scrap sectional view taken on the line 4-4 in Figure 1.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, a child's safety seat comprises a moulded shell 10 having a seat portion 12 and a back portion 14. The shell 10 is pivotally attached, at 1 6 to a transverse member 1 8 of a generally U-shaped frame. The side limbs 20 and 22 of the frame extend downwardly from the transverse limb 18 and have their free ends formed into horizontally extending U-shapes, the upper limbs 24 of which are level with the seat portion 12 of the shell and the lower limbs 26 of which rest on the vehicle seat 28. An adult lap strap 30 extends over the frame at the junction between the vertical limbs 20 and the upper horizontal limbs 24 and thus secures the frame firmly against the vehicle seat 28.A respective projection 32 formed on each of the limbs 20 and 22 prevents the lap belt 30 from riding up the limbs 20 in the event of there being any tendency for the seat as a whole to submarine out of the lap belt 30.
Turning now to Figure 3, in accordance with the invention the seat portion 12 of the moulded shell has a rigid outer layer 1 the front end of which is formed with an upwardly extending ridge 32 so as to form a depression between the front edge of the seat and the seat back 14. This depression is filled by crushable material 34, e.g. expanded polystyrene, and the interior of the shell 10 is lined with flexible sheet material 36.
Turning to Figure 4, the seat shell 10 is attached to each of the upper horizontal limbs 24 by a mechanism which allows the seat shell 10 to pivot about the attachment 1 6 between the position shown in solid lines in Figure 1 and that shown in chain-dotted lines. Attached to each of the limbs 24 is a respective bracket 38 which extends vertically so as to be substantially parallel to the side of the seat shell 10 and which contains an arcuate slot 40 centered on the pivot axis of the attachment 1 6. The slot 40 has a respective enlarged portion at each end.
A respective bracket 42 is secured to the seat shell 10 so as to have a free end extending parallel to the corresponding bracket 38 adjacent to the slot 40 therein. Each bracket 42 carries a stud 44 which projects through the slot 40 and carries a plunger 46 which is of larger diameter than the width of the slot 40 but of smaller diameter than the enlarged ends thereof. The plunger 46 is spring-biased into engagement with the bracket 42 and thus inhibits movement of the stud 44 along the slot 40. Consequently, the seat shell 10 is normally secured in one or other of its end positions but can be moved to the other position by first pulling the plungers 46 outwardly clear of the brackets 38.
In use, a child occupant is heid in the seat by a full harness consisting of a lap strap 50 attached to the brackets 42 and shoulder straps (not shown) attached to the shell 14 adjacent to the pivotal attachment 1 6. In the event of sudden deceleration, the downward component of any force tending to cause a child to submarine out of the harness has the result of crushing the polystyrene 34 so that the child is retained in the seat by the ridge 32.
